Microsoft Patents New Xbox 360 Controller (No, not Kinect)

The DS3 is capable of functioning as a regular USB controller, it just doesn't on a PS3. Plugging in a Sixaxis or DS3 will only use USB to charge it, not to transmit controller data.

Are there actually people who prefer them, or just who don't mind them? Given that there are literally zero positive qualities to internal batteries I find the former kind of unbelievable. :lol

Eneloops, bitches.
Unless they changed that functionality when they released the DS3 that would be incorrect. The SixAxis controllers for a fact used a wired connection when plugged in as that was the only workaround to that ridiculous sync problem they had.

Partially. The DS3 doesn't act as wired controller when plugged in. The input is still sent wirelessly.
Don't know about that, anyone remember the early days of the PS3 where, when you performed a Firmware update it REQUIRED you to connect a controller via USB?

As far as needing 100 ft usb cables for a PS3 while sitting on the comfy couch in the huge living room...

you can also just plug the DS3 into any power thing around you that can charge through USB input...like say a laptop or wall outlet....while its still connected to the PS3 wirelessly..... I think that is one other reason it is always connected through Bluetooth with the PS3...so you can charge it using other means, while still playing PS3 games from a comfortable distance.

If you read the patent you'll see that IGN got their description of it wrong. Here's the abstract, emphasis mine:

A game controller operates in both a wired mode and a wireless mode, and is able to switch between these two modes without permanent disruption to an ongoing game. The game controller is configured to detect a condition that suggests switching from the wireless mode of operation to a wired mode of operation, convey the indication to a host game system, and transition from the wireless mode of operation to the wired mode of operation.

Look at the claims. They are all related to checking the controller's power. There is also a method of transitioning to wired play without interrupting the game. Nothing about latency.

This whole argument is stupid. If you like the PS3 approach, buy a battery pack. If you like swapping AAs, use those. I don't see how mandating one approach over the other is somehow preferable.

"without permanent disruption" is pretty big as when you plug in or unplug a PS3 controller it resyncs.

It was the case with the Sixaxis, at least, as people discovered back near launch when they tried to play plugged in to solve the occasional Bluetooth-spazzing problems some people were encountering. Maybe the DS3 is different?
Nope, exactly the same. Both the Sixaxis and the DS3 have always used USB as the transport when the cable is connected to the PS3. If you plug the cable into a PC, and you don't have that sixaxis driver installed, then you can charge the sixaxis from the PC, while it's controlling the PS3 over Bluetooth. If you do have the driver installed, then I suspect the controller synchs to the PC.

I go through these like Paris Hilton goes through morning after pills.

Nothing wrong with the wireless controllers.
Destroying the environment.

I meant Paris Hilton.

So basically Sony was following Microsoft the first half of this generation, and now that Microsoft has a massive install-base, they are following Sony the other half of the generation...

What a twist! :lol

It took four years to hear the community complaints about the d-pad? They're only putting it on one model of controller? Removing the face colors? Only with the play and charge? SIXTY FIVE EFFING DOLLARS?!??! I play my 360 more than any other console, but MS is really pissing me off lately between this and the XBL price increase. Get your act together, Microsoft. $65 is a cruel joke.

Also, what's the point of the twist functionality? Like sometimes you want it to be a good d-pad and sometimes you want it to completely suck? Why would you ever choose to have it completely suck? Terrible idea.

Unrelated, but I bought a wired in April and it just died. Very odd, I had used it earlier in the day and a few hours later it stopped working. The controller is unresponsive now, doesn't do anything when plugged in except for getting extremely hot.

The straight up cross design is patented by Nintendo. I'm pretty sure that's 80% of the reason why it "twists" into something else. the other 20% is for the crazy people that actually like it.

The colors! Why did they take them away?!? If they wanted to remove them, they should've had color LEDs you could turn on or at least have the letters be in color...
Open up your old xbox controller, remove face buttons, open up your new controller, swap face buttons, resell for 150bucks for being a "superior, customized design", buy two controllers for you to do the same thing, profit.
