Microsoft: PS4 won't make us change "anything" with Xbox One [ummm]

Granted, its too early to tell. However, the developer behind the new KI certainly doesn't inspire confidence in quality.

That said, I will agree that both system's launch titles are lacking. Its KI, Forza, Ryse, and Dead Rising vs Killzone, Knack, Witness, and Driveclub. Personally, I'm not dying to play any of them.

First KI impressions are good and people behinf it know their shit. A lot of people are just hating on the game, because is microsoft exclusive.

This is almost Nintendo level of denial

We made an unpopular choice for a gaming system, we're sticking with it, and you will love us for it or you can go to hell

What are you talking about?! KI has tons of iconic characters.

Like Dino! ...the dinosaur. And Wolf Claw! ...the wolf man.

And don't forget Glacier, the ice man. Blazer, the fire man. Ninjo, the ninja. Robore, the robot. Punch Combo, the boxer. There's nothing goofy and generic about these fighters.

Wait those are actual characters in KI?

Edit: never played KI - too busy with better games - assuming your post is full of parody

The expected response. Michael Pachter said that Microsoft is unlikely to change or reverse their stance on the Xbox One due to the fact that the entire system was created around this setup. Unless this thing outright bombs I expect them to stay the course.

Remember that they no longer view Sony or Nintendo as competitors. That explains their attitude towards this.

lol, well let's play with mortal kombat and his iconic roster of rainbow ninja men a d women.
Mhhh, maybe it's better if we look at the shoto army in street fighter. I dunno, which do you prefere? Silly game.
Uh, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have iconic characters. Everyone knows Ryu, Ken, Dhalsim, Chun Li, E Honda, Zangief, Guile, Blanka, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Goro, etc.

Like the most iconic character in KI is the knight dude on the cover and the chick who flashes people for an attack.

Who the fuck are you kidding?

My guess is that they will run into issues quickly after the launch. On launch it should sell out. It seems the Xbox One will be supply constrained for a while because of its eSRAM production problem. The fact it will be hard to get might create a small buzz for it but at the same time there will be issues customers will be running in and that won't be heavily advertised.

Many customers aren't actually knowledgeable about the electronics products they are buying. Good luck explaining to them you can only trade some of your games and only at specific retailers and how you need to be connected to the internet once in every 24 hours to be able to play your games.

They can't really change their DRM policies much. The console was designed with all the games being installed on it. This in turn forces the online check since you could install the games on multiples machines without it. The solution would be a disc check for every game, every time you use them but that would remove the big advantage of the install and use the game everywhere you go and across family members.

What they could do : change the you need to have your friend for over 30 days on your friend list before selling him or giving him a game. Prints small runs of rental disc version for each game so the games can be rented. Removes the online check for that version but put a restriction on the hardware that only 1 rental version of any games can be installed at a time and have the game performs a disc check once every 24 hours. Prevents publishers from making their games impossible to trade-in. Make sure every retailers get the device that allows to accept Xbox One trade-ins. Drop the price. Do what Paul Thurrot is suggesting and have bundles without Kinect. You can probably drop the price by 100$ and people will be glad to not pay for something they don't want. Get exclusive games that will force people to buy it even if they don't like their policies.

This console is going to tank so hard.

Being "happy and proud" of your business model is one thing, being delusional while ignoring all the outcries from your existing fanbase which is demanding an overhaul of your self-destructive policies is another.

Downplaying a game like that, is dumb. Hating on a game only for its platform, is childish.
I could say the same shit, for every beat em up. Go ask your dad, who is goro or raiden, i'm sure he will know the answer.

Of course Microsoft isn't going to change anything... they actually believe their own marketing hype. It's absolutely perfect as-is, why on earth would they change a thing? Negative comments? Those people are wrong, is all.

And in six months, they'll have the same look of bafflement on their face as they did with Windows 8 and the Surface tablet.. complete bewilderment as to why their product is collecting dust on store shelves.

As far as corporate tools go, Major Nelson is easy the most annoying, smug, condescending tool in the industry today. There's literally nothing that comes out of his mouth that doesn't make my brain hurt, going as far as back as criticizing the entire Blu-ray format because it's interface API used Java and justifying $200 proprietary hard drives.

KI should be the poster child of the Xbone and the 'future of gaming' by being a modern 'coin op' game: each continue should cost real money, accessing each character on your account should cost real money, unlocking special moves should cost real money, etc.

man, thinking about what MS could have done with this system if they had abandoned discs and ditched Kinect as mandatory.

They would catch some flak for not having physical media BUT...

1. they would not need 24 hour license check ins since there's no disc install loophole. Machine could be offline indefinitely after a game is downloaded.

2. they could focus their message on the benefits of game sharing across online connected consoles and family circles, without having to explain how your current rights with discs are getting screwed over.

3. making Kinect optional means they could sell the system for cheaper. Heck, no BRD disc drive would mean they would have a shot coming it at under the PS4 price.

Even if the download-only console would turn away some people, it would be better than imposing restrictions on physical media and forcing online check ins.

They made a big mistake attempting to treat discs like digital downloads. if they hadn't been so impatient about making the switch, they wouldn't be seeing this backlash. They could just wait 5 years where more consumers would make the choice themselves to abandon discs and go DD only.

Either abandon discs entirely or treat them as they do now and let the market transition to DD only on their own timeframe.

"Knight Dude?" Not sure if serious. KI was a SNES pack in game and a fairly big N64 release as I recall, so there is brand recognition and nostalgia there.

if Microsoft wants to put KI in the public eye, a dew/Doritos campaign is all it takes. Assuming that iconic characters are going to be the deciding factor (especially since no new MK or SF is launching with either console) is a mistake. If the game is fun, looks good, and is well marketed (the F2P option might work in its favor here) , it will do fine.

I don't recall the N64 version being big, SNES was for sure, but that was a long time ago. I hardly doubt the playerbase MS has or is going for gives 2 shits or even knows about a KI. Nostalgia won't be a factor or much of one on Xbone this early in its life.

What is MS's 'bomba' going to be with the Xbone?

It's a given the console will drop $50 in the first 6 months, but what incentive can they throw out to totally persuade gamers to go MS vs Sony?

They have a firm stance on their DRM/sharing policy, so what can they do to make dealing with that nonsense worth it?

Free games.

Calling it now. Either just before launch or just after it, they are going to annouce one or two pack in games for a limited period only.

It will probably be Killer instinct and Dead rising, but i wouldnt put it past them to include call of duty.

Not only that they will include access to a bunch of entertainment apps that youd normally pay a subscription.

They are going to turn this around the tried and tested microsoft way...by opening their wallet.

Well my dad actually does know who they are since he took me to the damn movie when I was a kid. KI hasnt had an entry since the N64. No one knows who these characters are. But really, being iconic has nothing to do with it being good.

People are downplaying it cause it looks bad as a fighter, is developed by developer with a poor track record and has no fighting game experience, and has terrible free to play model. It being on a bad console is just icing on the shit cake.

One thing is for sure E3 2014 is going to be a blood bath with MS trying it's hardest to come back. The next few E3's are going to be very interesting indeed.

Its silly to try and compare Killer Instinct with Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat was the CoD of the 16 bit days. It smashed pretty much every home and arcade sales record, and was the first video game to boast a box office sized opening. Its had movies, tv series, cartoons, and became the face of videogames during all the controversey surroudning violence in games.

I agree that Killer Instinct was popular (17 years ago), but to say that it is as iconic as Mortal Kombat is just ridiculous.

It's parody. But not to far off from their real names. Riptor the raptor, Glacious the ice man, T.J. Combo, the boxer. Spinal the skeleton. Eyedol, the one eye'd monster.

Even Major Nelson seems to be pretty bitter and hostile in his responses now. Yeah, he's probably frustrated and burnt out on the hammering he and MS has been taking, but sorry dude, it's because it's all yours and your company's fault. So, deal with it.

I have tremendous respect for the KI brand, but you cannot be serious trying to put KI on the same level as SF.

Edit: It's like saying Crash Bandicoot is as good as Mario.

but that would have them change their entire approach. The architecture of the box is designed around running a form of windows 8 and apps, for entertainment and TV overlay. That informs the ram, the esram, the lower GPU power, the yield issues. Everything.

The games are just one strand of that. I'm sure MS are having some pain right now, but I still think they are happy with this approach and expect people to come around to their point of view eventually.

We'll see what happens. The console definitely has much more negative news at the moment but things can turn around post launch.

I'm expecting many changes to both consoles over the course of the gen, especially due to online (frequent updating, interface changes, etc.).

Once the systems get going, I honestly don't think that a large portion of the stereotypical "Xbox Dudebro" gaming audience will mind having to go online every 24 hours when they have the system on since sports games and shooters are popular because they are known for being the main online competitive games. When you add that fact in with games of those two genres making up basically half of the top 10 selling games, I honestly don't think that MS will have that much trouble in getting them to move over just as long as they make some huge changes to their PR (lol; they've been horrible in this area).

So I don't know. Too early in my opinion to say whether the system will do well. But due to the reasons I stated above, I highly doubt that it will completely flop.

At this point, I think everyone is talking out of their ass if they think they know what MS's player base does and dose not recognize.

Then again, it's getting smaller and smaller by the day. Who knows. In a few weeks time, you might be able to get a 50% statistical sample just by asking some dude on the bus.

Obviously there's no stone cold facts regarding how KI will perform XBone, but I just don't see nostalgia playing a factor regardless of how well it does. If it were releasing on a Nintendo platform and was being worked on by RARE, possibly.

jesus christ; this is actually sony ps3 launch.

Except I don't think MS can actually recover from this in the longterm like Sony did. They are too arrogant and unfocused on games. The Xbox has been dead in the exclusive department for years now, ever since MS decided on its new "vision". Not to mention this DRM shit isn't something you can undue easily while price drops over time.

People are downplaying it, because it's on xbox one, period. So much hate and ignorance on this game, it really makes me sick. What you just wrote, is plain false.

People still aren't ready for a DD only console.

The majority of people don't even have Internet connections that would support downloading full blu ray games well. It was smart for MS to stick to having game discs as an option in my opinion.

The Xbox One is definitely a transition console -- wanting people to move from physical to digital though. But as I said, it would be too soon to go straight into digital only.

I'm expecting digitally only sometime during the next decade. Hopefully Google Fiber will take over the nation by then :)

I know, I know... You're right.

They made some super important decisions very early on that they can't turn back on now.

But I was imagining if they had made a different risky decision when they started designing the box. DD only, no discs. focus on that instead of the other stuff. it'd still ruffle feathers but a lot of the current controversy about consumer rights would be gone.

They may be happy with their current approach but I really think it will fail them. Live TV overlays and split screen integration is something that they pushed for early on, of course, but it's such a silly feature. And it doesn't even support DVR playback. Can't see it selling a $500 machine. I don't know what the execs who pushed this were thinking. It's like they're in a bubble

Killer instinct was a nintendo exclusive, so it's not really comparable to multiplatform games, with many releases, like street fighter and mk, but it was a huge hit on Snes, back in the day. But again, who gave a shit about MK, before the 2011 reboot?

Honestly, I don't think Microsoft's presence in the gaming industry is healthy for gamers. I hope they jump ship as fast as possible.

I love my 360, and it's got some killer exclusives for it, but it's hard not to agree with this statement. Aside from their early (and now abandoned) courting with Japanese developers, and being a handy go-to outlet for studios disillusioned with Sony, they've promoted a gaming culture that is cynical, disposable and stagnant more than any other party in the industry.

They simply do not respect it as an artform.

jesus christ; this is actually sony ps3 launch.

It's much, much worse. While PS3 was a juggernaut of setbacks and bad press at release, it was still a desirable product, tailing the most successful console in history, with games people wanted to play. Xbox One doesn't have that luxury.

There's nothing MS can do to amend or appease with Xbox One now, they've set their multi-billion dollar ball rolling, and it won't stop until they decide it's no longer worth it, which knowing MS' dogged determination and propensity for throwing lots of money at big problems to make them go away, will be a long time coming.
