Heh, Microsoft will be the poster boy because they have the dominant position in the OS market. The government really can turn the screws if they choose to, and Microsoft really doesn't have the option of saying no. None of these companies do, seeing as how most of them are based in the US.

Again, it seems like people are waking up to the unpleasant reality that their 'free and open' platform may not be all it seems. The entire digital era is facilitated by a few, mostly US tech companies. It's like how the price of silver is actually determined every day by a cabal of three banks.

When the Soviets lost the Cold War, there was literally no more competition to the US in terms of computer development. Not the Germans, not the British, Chinese etc. It was the US alone, and all kinds of people rightly fear it. Every programming language of any significance uses English lexicon. Parts for all kinds of electronic components are still measured in US imperial.

People need to realise that the heart of the internet resides squarely in the US. It is a resource that the US offers to the rest of the world, and a map of intercontinental network cables will bear me out. While it is the choice of other countries to use it or not, ultimate control very much resides within Uncle Sam, and we have simply not seen the US exert this control in the open until now.
