Guess we will definitely hear about halo 6 this year then?
Also lol at scalebound getting a 30+ page thread when the actually threads couldn't get even passed 2 pages. Where were you guys then when others and I wanted to talk about SB
That's not how business relationships work. Short term there can exist some friction but in the end money is the only thing that matters. These second/third parties won't deny a good business deal with MS if the opportunity arises.
I can see this happening though.
Because retooling and changing things enough to not infringe on any copyrights and trademarks is a thing. Look no further than Demon and Dark Souls.
I still cannot comprehend that Microsoft bought Rare including all their properties and haven't even managed to crank out one direct Banjo sequel. In fifteen years. Microsoft must have a personal grudge against collectathon fans. Deeply felt.
I imagine it will launch with Fifa, CoD, Battlefield, Overwatch, Madden, Minecraft... you know, the console games that actually matter and sell systems.
Exclusives mean nothing these days outside of enthusiast forums like this. If the Scorpio is the best place to play the above games, it will sell.
No multiplayer, not much opportunity for micro transactions, no green light.

Just to clear things up - i'm not saying CD3 is cancelled yet at all. AFAIK, its coming this year. But from what I have heard, I have zero confidence that what does come out will be worth it.
You have no idea how accurate this mantra is within MS publishing.

Can the project be salvaged and go third party via a different publisher? Or is this a situation like Heavenly Sword where Sony owned literally all the tech behind the game and the work done just burned into the abyss?

Damage controll??? HahAHA. This is called common sense after reading 20 pages of that kotaku thread you would think Xbox headquarters was on fire. Like I said lashing out
It's strange that with this kind of philosophy they haven't gone into mobile gaming. That's where the real money is at with this kind of stuff.
Even Sony has that one mobile game in Japan that is making ridiculous money. I think it was a Fate game.
Wasn't it literally finished and after the last beta it was actually insane fun and good to go basically?
Would love to see the story behind that one.
It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out considering Xbox is making a huge hardware announcement this year...
I get what you're saying, but there's a lot of contradiction in these two different thoughts (Xbox scaling back on gaming...Xbox going very hard in on a new HW revision). It could be a bit of both, of course...I see it less as MS getting out of making software as it is about MS less interested in backing big games that are risky. I suspect most of the "risky" games will be smaller scale stuff (something like Ori)...Which is unfortunate, if true.
Some of the coolest games of the last ~20 years have come out of MS' studios doing something different (of course, these games came about in a much different time in the gaming industry...). I'd hate to see an end to MS studios taking a chance on major new IPs.
I have been trying to bring more attention to it in subtle ways on the board, but the last year has seen some very troubling developments from MS. It's just hard to break through with talk of the Scorpio, which is why they made that announcement as early as they did.I think these last 6 months is the first time the Xbox division has gone that long without making a new software announcement.
Heck, MS featured 2 JP developed games on stage at their E3 conference as if its a solid match for their marketshare (FFXV, Tekken 7), and people stopped & thought "MS is being silly" instead of rightfully thinking "Did MS really have nothing else to show?"
They have plenty. Go back and look at how much stuff actually gets shown at E3. If you have a deep dive of State of Decay, Sea of thieves and Crackdown 3, then add something about minecraft,ID@xbox reel, 2-3 third parties, some CG trailers and some kind of peripheral thing and that's their conference. Same as it usually is. They have a 90 minute showTrying to think about possible E3 content especially now with Scalebound cancelled. Halo 3 anniversary? Is Playground's new IP ready to be shown with significant gameplay? Could Sakaguchi's game be Lost Odyssey 2?
Can the project be salvaged and go third party via a different publisher? Or is this a situation like Heavenly Sword where Sony owned literally all the tech behind the game and the work done just burned into the abyss?
No. Here's the story behind it.

Like quantum break and Ori?
When you show the few games you have in development as CG trailers, years before they're supposed to come out, usually it means you don't have anything to show besides that, and this has been debated every year they make a conference.

Yeah, that was going to be the case regardless of Scalebound.Guess we will definitely hear about halo 6 this year then?

The majority of Gaf saying the game looked bad is not damage controlling come on, wonderful 101 was not the best, Kora, TMNT, Back in April we had a thread about the changes going on in platinum and Scalebound not looking good. Eurogamer has now backed that up in their story. How is all publishers have this problem damage control, that reminding people of something obvious while run round like headless chickens shouting the sky is falling. Stop taking things so personally, people seem to disconnect real life and business from games because so much is behind the scene. Seriously lashing out.Saying it never looked any good, that Platinum are going downhill and can't handle big projects, and that all publishers have problems like this is straight up damage control.
Platinum have a strong track record of working with multiple publishers, of getting work done on time, on budget and to design spec, and even of being able to be brought in as trouble shooters on already troubled projects to get them to market.
Whatever has happened between them and MS is not 'usual' and its not 'no big deal'
e:
it's not 'no big deal' for either party; MS has lost one of their known quantities that isnt ForzaHaloGears, and Platinum have lost a major publishing deal that a significant portion of their staff were working on.

Ori is a relatively low-budget DD title. Quantum Break was a flop.
wonderful 101 was not the best
Exactly. He was saying MS only makes MP or MT heavy games. The point is, it's not like MS hasn't don't SP focused games in the last 15 years. But they haven't faired particularly well when they try larger titles.
Well, they are sitting on Banjo and haven't even tried. I could forgive them if they tried and failed, but buying the western made game ever made and then just to shit on its fanbase is cruel. And it's not like every game needs to be AAA, you see with Yooka-Laylee what kind of team size is sufficient for such a game. I think it is very very unlikely that a new Banjo wouldn't be profitable and there is a good chance that it significantly broadens their appeal, extending beyond shooters and racing games.

I've actually said it on more than one occasion, that the two notable exclusives - We Happy Few (timed) and Dead Rising 3 (rumored to be timed as well) along with the lack of a Gamescom conference should've a been warning sign.I have been trying to bring more attention to it in subtle ways on the board, but the last year has seen some very troubling developments from MS. Seems I have some reading to do.I have been trying to bring more attention to it in subtle ways on the board,
I think the thing with Banjo is that Rare wants to focus more on new IPs like Sea of Thieves. Shinobi in the OP even said that they've become a "New IP factory". So with Rare focusing on that, there's no one else really around to develop the franchise, it seems.
Heh, maybe if Yooka-Laylee is really successful, Microsoft will sell the Banjo IP to Playtonic, like how they gave away the IPs Press Play made to their successor studio, Flashbulb.
not happening but i wish it did
”We've got an idea for [Perfect Dark]. It would be controller plus Kinect. We've got ideas for most older Rare IP, you won't be surprised to hear," Woodroffe said. ”There's quite a lot of desire to do that, and Viva Pinata, Conker... Banjo's very popular internally, a lot of people want to do stuff with Banjo." - Link
I don't think you understood my point; I'm not saying that no publishers have problems with games slipping, going over budget or not meeting the design specs.
I'm saying multiple publishers have not had this problem with Platinum.
Platinum were the ones brought in to salvage Kojimas Revengeance from development hell. They were the ones to bring a Miyamoto concept prototype to market in Starfox Zero. They were the studio brought in to help Squeenix get a sequel to Nier out this decade.
They have a track record of being consummate professionals, and getting projects delivered on time, on budget and to specification. TMNT or Korra not being very good games isn't their 'fault', these were low budget, fast turnaround products that did exactly what was requested.
Also FYI W101 is a very good game that did not sell very well.
