Microsoft Wants Halo to Last Another 30 Years

If they take risks, I could see it lasting a few years.

More games like ODST, Halo Wars as well as making sure that any game released under the Halo banner is extremely polished and doesn't suffer from issues that make you wonder if MS really cares about the IP beyond seeing it as their cash cow.

That's gonna be the key, and the risks need to come from side games, not the main entries. I'm all for jazzing up the Halo formula, but doing so much in a single entry is just pissing off too many fans.
I'm actually looking forward to Halo 5 but dear God, are people bashing on every little detail.

And onto a ride where they make a game that plays almost exactly like Halo and has some of the same trappings as Halo for the next ten years?

30 years = 3 IPs they can control

Great deal if you ask me.

Geez, Miles, when Bish robbed you of your trolling, you went full on extremist. Hate on indies, hate on Bungie. Try to pull back a little. :P

I honestly think Halo is an amazing series that broke new ground for first person shooters but 30 years!? Only a few franchises can last that long. Nintendo franchises have lot of longetivity. I can see Grand Theft Auto lasting over 30 years as well.

Also, Destiny. /s

Doom isn't thirty years old yet, Unreal Tournament is gone, Quake (single player) is gone, Perfect Dark is gone, Half Life has been in hiatus, Crysis lived and died in the span of seven years, Deus Ex is surprisingly alive, Bioshock still exists, Wolfenstein surprisingly alive, Far Cry is alive.

Thirty years is a long time in this industry, I like Halo a lot but I'm starting to grow really apathetic towards the franchise. There hasn't been a shortage of shooters on consoles since the original Halo was released, the world and Halo fans can move on pretty quickly.

I doubt it will be relevant to a mass audience for that long, but 343 Industries and MS had better make some better decisions and products if they want to instill some confidence in today's crowd. Personally, I'd love for 343 to, at some appropriate point, just give up on Halo and makes something original, but I guess that's their whole reason for existing.

You could go in endless directions with this, almost every alien species could have their own entry. Give me a TV series about the grunt rebellion.

30 years isn't actually too crazy, but Halo is pretty much close to an annualised franchise at this point.

Even if a mainline release is only every 3 years, that doesn't change the fact that Halo is being continuously pushed out there without the kind of respect that keeps the brand sticky outside of the sporadic mainline releases.

Yeah, this is the key. They need to stick to Halo fundamentals in the mainline games and test new features/modes in spin offs with an eye to incorporating those features should they be embraced by the fanbase.

The key to Halo sticking around is sticking to the fundamentals and not chasing the new hot thing. Evolve the genre on your own terms, not by copying others.

Hating indies? You're thinking of someone else. And my dislike of Bungie after Reach is well documented.

Can't ever forgive them for Reach. It's existence directly led to Halo 4.

With MS's marketing money, it shouldn't be hard to keep a halo game in the spotlight of whatever future gaming platform they support. I think they'd even be able to let it rest for a few years and bring it back to some excitement.

They can expand the universe in a lot of directions with new genres, new stories, and maybe actually do a tv show or whatever. What will kill the franchise is bleeding it dry year after year with broken or uninspired games. I liked ODST and Reach, but some say it fell off after Halo 3. 343 isn't exactly shooting off fireworks either.

Fine by me, just make good games. They need to shop it around, have some other devs give side Halo games a shot. More Halo Wars, less Halo 4.

They are gonna need to move away from MC then. Gaming's super long franchises have kept going because they either are very story light (Mario etc) or each game in the franchise is set in an independent universe (FF etc).

In that case, they're definitely looking for a new fanbase.

After Irrational shut down I wouldn't be surprised if Bioshock is dead. Also Unreal Tournament is still alive with a new game coming out next year.

Spartan 1337 was refreshing.

LEGO Halo would be cute.

SimCity Halo/HaloVille etc. could be... something.

Wonder if they could pull off something like Splinter Cell/MGS, but with ODST/Spartan IVs. Maybe even try a horror game with the Flood & rampant A.I.

Wouldn't mind a tower defense what with all the weaponry and variety of enemies. "Halo: Invasion"

Well, who knows where yearly franchises will go. This whole industry doesn't even have data since long enough regarding yearly franchise. Its fairly possible some might last multiple décades after all. Call of Duty still is in shape (although declining) and Assassin's Creed is also going a long way. Also, sports games are having at least 2 decades of yearly releases.

Develop Halo Wars as a proper RTS series and this could happen, I don't think the FPS games alone can make it work. Also upping the quality of the Halo TV/Movie projects is a must (Let Blur do something!).

What did you expect them to say?

"We don't want to be known only as a studio that was set-up to take over Halo from Bungie, and manage Halo for the rest of our lives. While it is not anytime soon, new IP is definitely in the future pipelines from our talented team over at 343."

I'm a massive Halo fan and please, don't do this.

The series should end with Halo 6, maybe 2 spin-offs, a movie and then we can call it a day.

343 industries
343 guilty spark (halo character)

Not saying that they can't make new ip but microsoft isn't hiding the fact that the studio was made to replace bungie and only make halo.

The direction of the lore and universe doesn't seem great. It was mildy interesting when there was some mystery and didn't take itself too seriously. Now, it's just bad Sci Fi and a serious morning cartoon that treads over standard stuff in the most confusing way with horrible characters. Maybe the kids like it, I dunno but I think it's a bit of a joke now with maybe a cool moment here and there.

343 or another studio need to make new Halo games that do some new stuff and aren't just a vehicle for merchandise before fun comes into it.

Please no. Don't follow the path of milking a franchise for three decades like another console provider! I say this as a person who is a big fan of Halo.

Maybe it needs an in-universe reboot like comics usually do.

Master chief reborn with 80s long hair, MC with moustache and sombrero.

I was really wondering when they'd have an A.I. try to subsume the Spartan it was attached to.

Ross should have focused on hiring people who know Halo in the formation of 343. You can just tell there is a ton of outsiders making the game who don't know what makes Halo special. After Halo 5, it looks like it will fall off the map with all the stuff their doing and even with MCC.

It's fair for the fans who still love the series.
I want Uncharted games until Nolan North can't utter a word for his voice over work, or until Naughty Dog stops being motivated about the franchise. Naughty Dog, pls.
