Mighty No.9: Jim Sterling impressions

The stage begins at the 3:20 mark. Motherfucking talks and Jim doesnt regain control of Beck until 5:20. 3 minutes of dialiogue out the gate. I am no game design expert, but I believe you should not be held hostage to dialogue for 3 minutes out the fucking gate

I refuse to believe this is the same guy who helped bring us Mega Man X

i think it looks fun.

Yeah, the graphics look like a hi-res ps1 game, but so what? if its fun, thats all that matters.

This is basically where I fall on the spectrum as well.

Yes, this campaign has been a clusterfuck and deserves all of the criticism it gets. But if the game is actually fun, does any of that actually matter?

It doesn't look fun, I find the mechanics annoying and all the big text is really distracting.

Even if you don't place great emphasis on graphics it's reasonable to expect a decent looking sidescroller for having that kind of budget.

How much do you think a game like this normally costs?

MN9 does not have a huge budget but that does not excuse the game for looking like it does.

I'm making a game and other people can judge it if they want, but Hollow Knight is being made by 3 people with a fraction of MN09's budget and it looks a hundred times better.

The reason? It's not at all unrealistic for a small team and a low budget to result in a good looking 2d game. I can tell you this absolutely affirmatively. If you have millions of dollars and make a shitty looking sidescroller there is absolutely no excuse for it.

With that much money the whole game could have looked like this or close to it. Just need the right person(s) involved.

I know how this stuff works, I'm making my own 2D game, I know the person who made that gif, and he is making his own 2D game as well which looks ten times better than MN09 and is being done by him and 2 friends

Ari (the person who made that gif) would tell you the same thing I juts told you. MN09 could have looked like that. I have absolutely no idea why it looks so bad. I can only speculate but none of my speculations even seem very good. I am baffled.

You had me convinced at "Jobbs". Ghost Song doesn't look so shabby either you know :P. I guess IntiCreates having talented artists could have made it work if Inafune wanted it to be 2D. Gunvolt looks a lot better, for example.

Was one of the reward tiers to get Patrick Klepek in the game?

With 4 million budget, you can hired 60 persons with a salary of 66 666 $ per year....

And Elysian tales the guy was alone and took him 3 years and half..... and look better and the game play is on point.

Something doesn't work here

I'm sharing my confusion about the price too. There are indie games made with a significantly lower budget than 3.8 millons that look better and have been made in a shorter time with less people.
I'm sure the gameplay is fun but with those graphics, it does look like a rip off.

3.8 million is not a lot for a game, full stop. It does not make good decisions suddenly appear.

For a game that looks like what we just saw? This is some no name indie developer stuff that you would say "wow great effort!" not the kind of quality befitting a team lead by the man who brought us mega man x.

I have a hard time believing that you need a team bigger than 10 to get this done in 3 years. 3.8 million pays for 10 people for 3 years + marketing (of which the has been very little) + community stuff and additional expenses like licenses needed for middle ware and servers etc. it should pay for it no problem assuming the funds are all going to the project directly and the dev team's salary is a median of 85k.

Clearly this was not the case and something got out of hand. What happend here is clearly a massive mismanagement.Especially if you consider that comcept has taken and helped compete additional projects while they were working on this.

I don't know exactly how many levels are in MN09 but I feel confident saying that a team of 2 or 3 people (if they are talented and care about the project) could do much better than this in 2 or 3 years.

That is not what I am saying.I am saying 3.8 million is not this huge thing that trumps all other factors. The dev team can just be bad. The producer can be bad. There could be hardcore mismanagement.

Just saying "This is what 3.8 million dollars gets you?!" is assuming game development is just a bar that gets filled up as more money gets poured into it. You can buy competency, but not everyone manages it.

I feel like that if I had that much, the game would have looked much better. I don't know, man. Something just seems "off" by the whole thing.

10/10

The 3DS is literally not capable of such output. Once the 3DS was added as a platform, the ability for the game to look like that disappeared because they wanted to build the game once for every platform.

Again: 3DS isn't capable of running UE3 at all and that version was never intended to even be developed by Inti Creates, so quit blaming it (or the Vita version, since that's also being outsourced and ported to a different engine).

More likely culprit is targeting 60fps on last-gen consoles.

Ah alright i get you now, you were basically saying that just because they had a solid budget doesn't mean that the game was magically going to be good right?

I totally agree with that i just think that considering how much "practice" inafune has had putting together these kinds of games and the amount of time he had to do so you'd be thinking we were gonna get something incredible.

At this point the thing I want most is an honest explanation of what happened to this game.

The development pedigree is there.
They had a great looking barebones proof of concept to kick things off.

In hindsight I am perfectly okay with having backed this game and in the worst case I would have backed for a lower tier...but I want to know what happened. We know that the game was pushed back due to not being able to get online working, and they didn't want to certify the game twice but it still feels like it took a ridiculously long time to get what we are getting.

The gameplay, on second look, just doesn't look right. I had this same feeling playing the beta, but there's a distinct lack of kineticism that the game implies but never acts on.

So you'll be shooting a dude, and dash through after he's weakened, but then the next dude still takes the same number of shots. Unless I've read correctly, the dashing doesn't powerup your boy. So while they say it's possible to never touch the ground, it's also so weak of a mechanic that you end up using it because the game says you can rather than necessity being ingrained in the design, if that makes sense.

I was hoping for enemies to hit hard, but you being able to chain through enemies at breakneck speeds.

Again, maybe I just didn't take the game in right or I've read the wrong things, but it feels so slow compared to what is implied.

My apologies, I wasn't aware the 3DS and Vita ports were outsourced.

The fire effects are actually in the realm of embarrassing.

I don't mean to keep talking about myself, but I made these explosion effects in a test environment and considered them subpar and still plan to replace them

link

now I don't know if I should bother because they take a lot of work

Can second the claim these fire effects are embarrassing. The stock shit I have to work with while making a Half Life 2 mod looks more convincing.

Really stop and let that sink in.

I don't see why people are saying 4 million isn't enough when Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a far more aesthetically pleasing game, yet Wayforward only received $800,000, and that's including money set for stretch goals. It's not like the team behind it isn't talented, so i'm rather shocked to see the end result.

It's from my game, it's called Ghost Song, I frequently make gifs as I develop it

It's kind of Metroid but with more RPG elements and a few mega man influences with the controls.

Off-topic, but I do have to say that this looks really promising. Kudos!

Inti Creates usually make good games and their sprite work is amazing, I have no idea what went wrong with MN9 though.

I think it's pretty clear what went wrong when you notice the one IntiCreates game that looks bad was made in collaboration with Comcept and all of the ones that look good weren't.

Comcept was in charge of design and made most of the decisions.

WHY DOES JIM SON OF A SUBMARINER STERLING GET AN EARLY REVIEW COPY NOW WHERE SHLUBS LIKE ME WHO PONIED UP THE INITIAL CASH FOR THIS DUMPSTER FIRE HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER FORTNIGHT???

WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

If lbpr to know where 4 million went to make this lol

$125,000 of it went into game development costs and staff salaries.

The rest of the $3,875,000 went to Inafune's crack cocaine habit.

I'm just kidding about the crack part. The money is probably in his retirement fund or something.

He's a GARMES JURNALIZT so he's more important than backers.

art direction is atrocious but the gameplay doesn't seem to look that bad. I will likely play through it once.

But underwater levels are not fun, unless its fucking Hydro City. Will they never learn?

it certianly is from the same guy who brought the world Mega Man X5, though

Problem is, one guy didn't make any of these games. He may have a lot of input, but it's an entire team of effort. You give Stephen Spielberg horrible actors and crew and he is going to direct a bad movie.

Depends on the stigma of the game. Persona 4 is revered on Gaf and it's a good 3 hours before you're able to move at all when starting a new game.

thank you =]

my trailer suitably explains what the jist of the game is

it's pretty dated but that's more or less what it's still like. I'll make a new trailer once release is close.
