Mighty No.9: Jim Sterling impressions

Actually this is using UE3 which is part of the reason why it looks so rough.

There's plenty of good looking UE3 games out there.

The art style is a way bigger problem. This thing looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp. And from the looks of the video, its got some performance problems as well.

Man.. that looks really well and it's really really far from what we got =(.

This game seems cheap, or made from an indie studio with no experience, maybe they'll patch it when it's release?

for fucks sake can't this nightmare end already, i thought "hell yes i want to revive the blue bomber" "yeah 250$ is nothing for a true spirital successor to megaman!" "wow the early concept gameplay looks amazing"

i love it when i read someone take this stance when everyone unanimously shits on a game that the person likes. lol

like the criticisms can't possibly be legitimate, it's just people trying to be "cool"...yeah....right
Oh I don't "like" this game, I didn't back it up, I probably won't buy it, and I don't even like Mega Man. It's just that I'm really surprised of the gap between the torrent of hate and the actual game shown in the video. I'm not seeing what makes it worse than tons of games that didn't have any sort of negative backslash. Sterling isn't even negative about it.

So for the casual passer-by, it looks like typical Internet hysteria, that's all. It looks fine.

In regards to the lacklustre visuals, can those be blamed on the systems list stretching back to 3DS? That did strike me as overshooting, even back in the kickstarter's early days...
Art direction is still terrible. Game could easily have looked good while spanning all the consoles

It looks like a mid tier budget game and it plays like a mm/mmx hybrid. Not sure what more you all could have expected.

There is a reason why these games aren't being made any more. People don't actually want to play them.

Well, I do, but the fact of the matter is that the market is minimal and this is the best you can expect to get. If you aren't into what you're seing then I suspect you never would because we aren't going to get a better effort than this.

Bloodstained shows that everything you said there is completely incorrect on every level. Heck people still want to play crash bandicoot.

This game might prove us all wrong, but for now the only reaon people wouldn't want to play it is that it looks like garbage.

Neither of these things are mm/mmx.

I'm sure some people will feel very strongly about this and disagree because they're very particular about what makes a megaman like experiences to them.
But for me I already got a better effort than this with Shovel Knight, great level design, great world with charm, great breadth of content. I couldn't be happier and there's still more coming. And that's not mentioning other projects that are coming up in the future that look very promising.

This is probably the case. Who thought it was a good idea to develop a game simultaneously for 3DS and PS4?

Maybe they looked at all their platforms (From PC all the way to handhelds) and decided that the weakest platform (The 3DS?) is going to be the target. So anything that can't run on a 3DS isn't going into the game. Would explain the super low-fi shading that makes everything look flat.

No, that makes no sense. The handheld versions were always intended to be developed externally and using a different engine; 3DS doesn't support UE3 at all.

More likely culprit is targeting 60fps on PS3/360/Wii U, which UE3 was never designed for.

Even this:

I heard that he did this in eight hours. All they had to do was give this guy $30k-$90k and a year to do all the art and animations.

I'd have bought the shit out of that if it was a game.

MN9... just looks so..meh? Not even bad necessarily, just bland and uninteresting, like one of those AA platformers you'd find in the PS2/XBox/GC era.

Bloodstained looks like a game made by a man who really wanted to keep making the games he liked working on and knew their were fans that wanted them too.

Might No. 9 looks like a game made by a man who really wanted to make money and knew there were fans that would be willing to give it to him if he played them like fiddles.

Bloodstained looks like a coy passion project, MN9 looks cynical.

Kickstarting stuff makes as much sense as pre-ordering stuff. Don't do it unless you're ready to be shafted.

Oh Jesus :D

Who thought it was a good idea to have constant cutscene interruptions and awful dialogue over the gameplay of a Mega Man game? The lack of cutscenes is one reason I prefer Mega Man Classic over X, and Mighty No. 9 is even worse than Mega Man X in that regard.

The actual gameplay doesn't look bad, but everything else is super rough.

No, this is wrong. It's a gamble, but it's an informed gamble and that rests on the gambler. Plenty of excellent games both digital and physical have been kickstarted to great success.

Pre-ordering is for people who just can't wait to spend their money, or are dead sure they are getting a game Day 1 and want the incentives.

I'd say that the successes warrant the failures. And we have a lot of KS games coming out this year that look fantastic, like Shantae.

Like Bloodstained, Volgarr, Shadow Complex, Dust, Rayman, Salt and Sanctuary, Ori and the Blind Forest and the like Shovel knight is not a Megaman game. The inspiration is clearly there, but MM it is not.

MN9 is literally a MM clone. Guts and all. This very specific thing is what I am talking about. I'm not convinced there are enough people out there who actually want more of this kind of game any more and if there is a current gen effort of this that will please people I'm not sure what that would even look like if not a 'retro' iteration of what has already been done.

Wow, that's such a difference. I remember seeing these shots around the time of the KS and they showed a game i could 100% be interested in.

What we got in the end is a million miles from this.

Even if it turns out to be a decent Megaman game, it's hard not to feel disappointed given what was promised at the beginning.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that since this game is coming out on 9 different platforms, they just picked the platform with the worst graphics(3ds), and made the graphical baseline based on that. So on 3ds, this game probably looks pretty decent. By the standards of the other 8 platforms though, it looks like a garbage fire.

My problem with the game is it seems to be a callback to the latter 32-bit mega man x games when I thought this would be more of a classic mega man revival with a bit of the X series thrown in

So KS fuckery aside I'm just all around meh on it. May pick it up on steam dirt cheap, I dunno. I guess i'll just stick with MM9 speed runs :/

lmfao This game is why you should never back shit on kick starter, ladies n gents.

It looks like a really bad XBLA game sold for like 3-4 dollars, but no this a multi-million dollar venture expecting 20-30 dollars day one retail...
Generalization too much? We got many good games already, I'm happy with Wasteland 2, Shadowrun, The banner saga and Bloodstained looks pretty good.

I honestly keep referencing to people how ridiculous it is that this game ended up this ugly while Ghost Song looks fuckin beautiful with a fraction of that budget.

Gotta wonder how much of that money they got has actually been spent on the game itself.

Thank you :)

I honestly don't understand it because I have some insight into the process. Obviously MN09 does some things that my game doesn't, but I still don't understand where their millions are going. I basically live on a shoe string budget.

Put this guy in yesterday

Well if this disappoints, at least we still have Mega Man 9 as an amazing revival/throwback to the older games. If only Capcom would port that to modern consoles + PC...

Oh I see so just because it's literally an MM clone we can't expect great level design and strong aesthetics. I guess it's excused then. Lol.
Like I said I'm not going to argue about to what extent what game makes a megaman like experience to anyone.

My point with Shovel Knight mostly even if it's not an MM like experience to some it's still definitely comparable in scope, structure, level design, achievable aesthetics etc. I don't see why I should be satisfied with MN9 when it's out shined in those aspects based on my experiences with the demo and the level shown in videos, especially given the budget it received, etc.

And again people bring this up in most MN9 thread but I think some people just chose to ignore and ride the "it's fine train" part of the salt is the way we backers were treated during the process. Lack of communication, lack taking feedback, etc. All we got was laughable polls, meanwhile other kickstarters ask backers on what shaders they should use and come back delivering something outside of the given choices that tries to get the best out of all of them. It's like some kickstarters actually respect their backers and try to listen.

I'm almost certain that the full game will have lots of the same issues that were raised when the demo was first made available.
Like someone said before MN9 does not exist in a bubble, reasonable comparisons can be drawn.

Man this thing is looking like a dumpster fire.

Still getting it next week. I guess I'll just drink/smoke my sorrows away as I play.

So the one thing I think most people will say after having played this (if similar to my thoughts) will be, this is decent... but... what did they do with all the money they got? Game feels solid from the perspetive of a small indie team having made it, not this huge budgeted game by the MM creator.

Not all of it looks absolutely terrible.

The fire effects are pure hilarity though.

It looks perfectly serviceable, outside of whatever it was that forced the decision on that art style.

It just looks like it plays worse than an actual Mega Man game, and watching someone play it is making me want to go back and complete the challenges on MM10 rather than play MN9.

It does look a lot like a Dreamcast game. I think it's because the voice acting, etc. reminds me of Sonic aka. really bad.

Stop, small indie team has nothing to do with the quality any game ends up with.
From a designer perspective it's just another limitation that you design around and that's nothing out of the ordinary for game development.
Another game, small indie team, Hyperlight Drifter, ended up being outstanding in quality.
It feels like a disservice to all these great games made by smaller teams with even smaller budgets to use the "small team" excuse to explain quality.

That looks reaaaallly mediocre. I mean not bad by any means but it really does just look like a cheap megaman knockoff. Very disappointed by the level of quality that has been showcased in this product.
