Mina the Hollower is a bone-chilling action adventure featuring classic gameplay and an 8-bit aesthetic in the style of Game Boy Color, refined for the modern era. Smooth 60/120 FPS action combat, a world full of mystery and horror, and top-down adventuring combine in a mix that may remind you of classic titles like Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, or even Bloodborne. Whip foes, burrow through the ground, and explore a pixel-perfect world in Mina the Hollower, a brand new game from the developers who brought you Shovel Knight!
Explore a vast world filled with pixel-perfect graphics, masterful gameplay, beastly bosses, and infectious music. Encounter a cast of bizarre characters, search out secrets in an array of exotic locales, and illuminate the omnipresent darkness!
The game is available on all major platforms.
You play as Mina, a whip-wielding Hollower and visionary inventor. She receives a troubling letter from Baron Lionel, her longtime patron and the overseer of Tenebrous Isle. Mina's advances in Spark Technology brought power to the Isle for the first time many years ago, ushering in newfound prosperity for its citizens. But now, the Spark Generators have gone out, and foul play is suspected.
You will use a myriad of weapons and oddball trinkets to vanquish the monsters thwarting Mina's objective. Along the way, you'll unearth the deep, dark secrets concealed beneath the island's newfound prosperity.
Some time ago ago, Spark technology transformed Tenebrous Isle from a backwater nowhere into a bustling and industrious place. Under the guidance of Baron Lionel, the Spark Generators were installed, transforming everyone's lives nearly overnight. But now, the prosperity of Tenebrous Isle is threatened. The sparks have gone out of the generators, and a creeping evil is growing closer to the heart of the island's capital city Ossex, the only area still running at full capacity.
Moreover, the Spark Generators were constructed remotely like spokes around the island, making their locales fraught with danger. Mina will have to undergo a whirlwind tour of the island's exotic biomes in order to restore them all.
As the most talented young Hollower in a generation, Mina strives to strike a balance between athletics and science. She received a formal education covering both fields and soon became both a renowned Hollower and the up-and-coming inventor of experimental Spark technology.
If the people of Tenebrous Isle don't know her by name, they've almost certainly benefited from her work! In battle, she burrows under her foes, emerging behind them and lashing with her whip, Nightstar. Some naivete has accompanied her posh upbringing, but Mina always strives to do what's right.
Though he is veiled in secrecy, Baron Lionel's lofty reputation precedes him wherever he goes. His experimental installation of Mina's Spark technology caused the rapid development of Tenebrous Isle. Because of this, everyone knows of him as a benevolent patron, and evangelist of science's benefits to humanity. Those who know him personally have been charmed by his gentle demeanor and oratory gifts.
Lionel will surely aid Mina to restore the power to the generators, but she has to find him first!
An explosive and mercurial figure, Thorne was the head of Lionel's personal guard before betraying the Baron and vanishing. Now, he and his turncoat band of Shock Troopers are taking advantage of the island's generator outages and wreaking havoc; in fact, it's widely believed Thorne and his followers are the culprits responsible for destroying the generators in the first place!
Mina will have to deal with Thorne if she plans to save the island and preserve her scientific legacy.
In classic handheld fashion, you primarily control the action with just the Directional Pad and the A and B buttons: the Attack Button, and the Burrow Button.
Tapping Attack makes Mina crack her trusty whip in one of four directions. It goes pretty far, but it takes her a moment to ready the attack, so make sure you've got plenty of space between you and your enemy before striking!
Tapping Burrow causes Mina to jump over small enemies or cross small gaps. Continue to hold the jump button as you land and you'll dive straight into the ground! Being a renowned Hollower, Mina moves much faster while burrowing than she does walking, but she can only burrow briefly before needing to resurface. While burrowing, Mina can't be damaged by most enemies or hazards, so use it to dodge danger and dig to safety. When you're ready, blast out of the burrow to get right back into the fight!
Beyond attacking and burrowing, Mina can utilize an arsenal of powerful sidearms found hidden along her path. She can only hold one at a time, so think carefully before swapping your trusty Volt Hatchet for that shiny new Gyro-Dagger. Some sidearms are simple to use, and others are tricky- but they all complement Mina's main abilities in new ways.
Additionally, Mina can discover a variety of trinkets- permanent items which can be equipped to provide a variety of exotic effects. Trinkets are life-savers, but you only have a couple of trinket slots, so choose wisely as you develop your own play style.
Mina the Hollower's art style is inspired by a veritable pantheon of portable games and consoles, especially the games and presentation found on Nintendo's Game Boy and Game Boy Color.
Jake Kaufman, the composer of Shovel Knight, is back! The "Expanded NES" music and sound effects in Shovel Knight were all made using the free program, FamiTracker, and they can be played back on a real hardware console. For Mina the Hollower, Jake has envisioned a souped-up fantasy Game Boy with an expanded sound chip of its own, and has turned to the MSX home computer and its beloved Konami SCC expansion to capture the lush, haunting sound of this chip mashup.
