Mistwalker wants to make RPGs for Wii U

I love that they build up hope with "Yeah we wanna do a Wii-U RPG!" and then end with "...but we have not planned anything."

Ups and Downs of Wii-U Life.

Why not take that risk? If it pays off they won't have much in the ways of competition, and considering how poorly most of their titles have sold does it really matter if it bombs on 360/PS3/Vita or 3DS or WiiU? Not like it'd cost any more money to develop for WiiU over 360/PS3/Vita. So they're only option would be 3DS for a dedicated gaming platform.

They did take a risk on both the 360, and Wii where there wasn't much competition. That didn't pay off. Given the way the Japanese market is today it would've been smarter to invest in a PS3 or 3DS project. PS3 has already been very well established the RPG home on consoles, and 3DS is the beast. But I guess Mistwalker wants to swing and miss three times.

They didn't take any risks. Microsoft funded their projects on 360 and Nintendo funded The Last Story. Mistwalker isn't a software publisher, nor a full-blown developer (they outsource teams to actually do the grunt work on the games).

Put 40 hours in last story and it was better than expected, especially the city and those surprising tiny streets so I hope they can do this and go forward with the formula, working on the exploration already satisfying in Lazulis and opening the missions.

That would make sense if Mistwalker self-publishes their games. They don't.

The decision on what plattforms they release their games are made by their publisher who finances the development of the game. If the publisher wants to see Game X on Plattform Y they'll do so.

Not all risks are financial initially. As a new start up, firing off so many luke warm products surrounds your brand with the stink of failure. Falling from HD RPG heights initially, down to Wii, and now phones doesn't tell a tale of success.

I do wonder if whatever beef the gooch had with Sony it was worth bombing into obscurity a second time over for.

Mistwalker wants to close. When you're a company who's had the issues they've had it isn't a wise idea to decide to bet on an unproven platform that the rest of the industry appears to be taking the "wait and see" mentality.

They should make a Vita game, they will close shop fast then.

"want to" is different from "will". We've heard "want to" from a ton of developers since the Gamecube years.

But still, I hope developers recognize that the Wii U Game Pad should be ideal for RPGs.

Yeah, because Lost Odyssee and Blue Dragon were huge sellers on the 360.

Obviously this doesn't mean anything concrete, but more Mistwalker is good. Hopefully this is excellent Mistwalker (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey) and not mediocre Mistwalker (Last Story).

Action RPG? Maybe it'll actually be good then unlike Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.
And no I'm not saying that classic turn based is bad, just that those were bad games in the genre. I haven't bothered with The Last Story yet either so maybe they can't do ARPGs either.

Blue Dragon was so underrated. Mistwalker and Artoon worked fantastically together IMO and I just wish we could have seen another joint project from them both, learning from their mistakes.

BD and LO are by far the best of Mistwalker's output, but the bottom of the barrel is stuff like Away and Blue Dragon Plus.

I never said those sold well... In fact, I said they had issues, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey being some of them. None of their games have really been hits, and part of the reason has been due to the platform's they've been on.

I pretty much liked all console RPGs Mistwalker has had a hand in so far, so I'm all for more of those.

Don't care about the platforms as long as the games can reach the quality bar set by BD/LO/TLS.

Maybe they should do a "Last Story Special Edition" port to the Wii U. I'd be much more interested in that than a Mass Effect 3 or Arkahm Asylum port. With so few games at launch it could potentially stand out just enough to get noticed.

The Last Story is mainly from the old Blue Dragon Artoon team & Mistwalker. They got all merged into Marvelous AQL near the end of the game's development.

Well, that statement does not seem to mean all that much.

I will say though that building an RPG presence early in Japan is critical for Nintendo, in my opinion.

If they were smart, they would have first and second party RPG's on track for launch and next year.

Mistwalker should do another Last Story for Wii U. If Nintendo has vision, they can create a powerful IP they can rely on, specially on the japanese market.

Does he have a strong enough team to make such a game at the moment? If a second screen is what interests him, perhaps the 3DS can do some of what he's thinking and not be as big of a game to work with.

Oh god, please let this happen!!!!!!! I'm glad they didnt give up after the horrible Last Story sales.. but hopefully Nintendo will let them.

Would Nintendo hire Mistwalker again? I was under the impression that the Last Story didn't do well at all in Japan. It's not like Sakaguchi has any other opportunities outside of iOS games. It seems MS doesn't want to deal with him anymore and he bad mouthed Sony so much that he burned that bridge alright.

Already losing me with "action RPG." Isn't it about time that you returned to what you're actually good at, Sakaguchi? Your best games were your first two, by far.
I think Sakaguchi was on to something with LS. It just needed less jank and higher difficulty(clearer graphics and better camera as would help as well). The game definitely had the dept there, sadly the game was piss easy so you where never forced to get into the mechanics.

Not sure if really want to make RPG for Wii U... Or just put my name out there for attention.

What we really need is for Sakaguchi to go to bed with Horii, Toriyama and Kato to watch from the bathroom, while Ito delivers the popcorn after being dropped off by Mitsuda who has to park the car, then we can get a spiritual sequel to Chrono Trigger.

If we have to suffer cell phone games for this to be the end result, then I'm all for it.

I know it was billed as a direct sequel, but that's pretty much what Chrono Cross is.

The rpg situation on the ps3 and 360 was shit. If Nintendo can get some good Japanese rpg support I may have to but a Wii U. Just give me something with the quality of xenoblade and I'll be sold!

I don't see the Wii U magically fixing that.
