Miyamoto: Pikmin 4 in development, "very close to completion"

After letting this marinate I'm going to place my bets on this being a Wii U game. I'm thinking Galaxy 2 and Majora's Mask style let's make something real quick with these assets. If it turns out as great as those two, then great.

that would make sense, they do this very often actually. Majora after Ocarina, Galaxy 2 after Galaxy etc...

And... Pikmin 2 after Pikmin 1.
People don't often realize Pikmin 2 maps where the same as Pikmin 1 either.

and Miyamoto also said that the continuos work on the DLC maps for Pikmin3 also would have helped the team in developing new iteration of the franchise.

I kinda hope this is on Wii U. I could go for another round with the game pad controls, it would come out sooner, and it's not like terrible sales would stop Pikmin 5 from being made as long as Miyamoto is alive, apparently.

I like when GAF gets together for a big Pikmin group hug, it's actually one of the few moments I enjoy when we can all like it together. It's obviously gonna be a Wii-U swan song title though, not quite the swan song but still.

Are we sure this isn't a mistranslation or something? This is so random that when I saw the headline, I skipped it thinking he was talking about Pikimin 3.

NX needs as many releases as possible simply for that reason; Wii U support has likely left a bad taste in many consumers mouth. It's gonna need strong software at launch and after launch if it has any chance at being a success. Nintendo needs to change the current image of "no games".

Also, the fact that Wii U is fading quickly. There is a very real chance that Pikmin 4 could sell better as a launch title on new hardware with an install base of zero than the Wii U, despite it's 10 million install base.

That being said it could be multiplat with Wii U and NX.

This sounds very much like all those "Splatoon will sell about the same as Wonderful 101" posts.

sounds like nx to me. first we got a nx software tease from square, and now nintendo. besides, dropping it on a dead console during its final year on the market is a waste.

Maybe it is a waste, but did Nintendo not say they would continue supporting the Wii U after the release of NX, ie still release games. And if you can do it on the cheap by re-using assets all the better. Also, we don't KNOW that console NX will release next year, so may not be Wii U's final year.

From a business PoV I have no idea why they are making more Pikmin games.
From a gamer PoV I am so happy they don't seem to care that I will probably be there day1(whenever I can get my hands on the game, thank you again regionlock).
Seriously who gives a shit how much it will sell, it's fucking Pikmin it never sold well, even Wii couldn't make the NPC version sell anyway.
I doubt that they even care if it sell like dust in Arizona or like ice cream in the desert at this point.

True. I just hope 4 doesn't get the filler/grind equivalent of 2's caves.

I loved the cave system. It was pikmin's RTS style combat and survival distilled to its purest form and a great challenge to have in an otherwise very relaxed game compared to pikmin 1. The fact they were randomized too made replaying a lot more fun also. If you wanna talk about grindy annoying design I'm surprised you didn't mention pikmin 3's infamous final level. Nearly turned me off entirely.

they say a lot of things

they didn't even support the wii after the wii u was released. you know, the console that had a 100 million install base. there isn't a chance in fuck they're going to support the wii u after nx drops. that shit will be off store shelves and completely forgotten the day nx drops.

You might as well remove Zelda from that list then, since you are clearly saying heavy hitter = sales volume, and Zeldas best sales day gets curb stomped by those others you listed.

The curb stomp is banned.

Nintendo is pretty notorious for ditching their home consoles as soon as the next system is released, for better or for worse.

Come to think about it, Sony is the only company who still produces for their older consoles after they are overtaken.

The guy that you mention in your avatar has already said that the NX isn't a traditional successor to the Wii U or 3DS.

Pokkén is confirmed for spring. Pikmin 4 could be the perfect Summer 2016 release. and from there who the heck knows what the fate of Wii U would be once NX is revealed.
Hmm, makes sense! I'd hope for like February, but it'd work well in June. Maybe they'll release it in August like 3.

I hope this is a Wii U game. I don't think it would move consoles as an NX launch window title, whereas Galaxy 3/next 3D Mario certainly would. This, Pokken Tournament, Fire Emblem, and Zelda (plus a few smaller titles/spinoffs I hope) would make for a decent Wii U sendoff in 2016, certainly better than what the Wii got in its last year or even last two years (which was basically Skyward Sword).

This... Isnt exactly the same case. You guys are really shortchanging these games.

Yes, Majoras mask used the same engine and character models as oot, however, the entirety of termina, was all new assets.

Yes, Pikmin 2 reused locations, however, they were completely remodeled, along with pretty much all the creatures, and the lighting model. Visually, pikmin 2 slaps the first around because of this.

Just because you are reusing an engine doesnt mean you are simply going to reuse the same assets. Nintendo has made leaps and bounds in the visuals department since pikmin 3, which already had great looking spots... They arent going to just reuse those old assets.

It doesn't matter if Pikmin 4 would move consoles by itself, it's important to have a robust library at launch or at least within the launch window to make a system seem appealing. Wii U didn't have anything but NSMBU for the better part of an entire year, and it was a major contributor to the horrible sales.

Given that Nintendo has openly stressed that they want NX's operating system to absorb Wii U's architecture specifically to port games over for launch, I think it's reasonable to expect this could be a Wii U and NX release (like Zelda is probably going to be).

Although being NX exclusive would explain why they didn't show a highly anticipated and supposedly near finished game at their lackluster e3.

The signs were there all along. The unresolved plot points from Pikmin 3, the short movies, the demo releasing so late, Miyamoto saying he wanted to do more Pikmin, the fact almost all Nintendo's games the last year, bar Splatoon, are made thanks to previously created engines, assets and gimmicks.

It's going to come out in the first half of 2016 for Wii U.

Amazing news, since 3 is my most liked game for the system atm.

my thoughts exactly, if this was solely a Wii U game it would have been at E3 this year (which I was actually expecting). If its coming to NX and launches xmas 2016 it would have made sense not to show it.

Easy rebuttal: Nintendo never made any sense.

Holy assumptions, Batman!

That's true but I guess the name Zelda alone carries some weight at least compared to Pikmin or others like Star Fox and even metroid.

No, it can absolutely be ruled out, there is no way the n3ds cpu can handle a pikmin game, as in real time strategy action game where you command 100 pikmin. If it was for 3ds, it would be a spinoff. Like pikmin commandos or something. That would actually be kinda cool.

I get that, but I think we shouldn't outrule anything until they officially announce on which platform(s) it's being released, unlikely I agree, but not impossible.

He said he wanted to finish Star Fox within a year. The release plans for that game probably changed after Zelda got delayed. I don't think he was far off.

When Miyamoto says "very close to completion", I believe him.

And either way he didn't give an approximate release date, so it isn't like that they're promising a date that they may or may not be able comply.

What? When did Nintendo ever say anything technical about the NX like that? They only said it exists.

That's excellent. So Pikmin 4 is going to be pretty much like Mario Galaxy 2. An unexpected sequel released in a relatively short period of time just to add more cool features/improvements and missions.

That's the hope. Could be incredible. And by could I mean will.

Sorry, tired stupor brain fart. Edited. Thank you!

Is there a Wii u release planned for like spring 2016 yet?

Pokkén is confirmed for spring. Pikmin 4 could be the perfect Summer 2016 release. and from there who the heck knows what the fate of Wii U would be once NX is revealed.

As AdanVC said, we get Pokken in Spring; but--

I suspect darkstar0155 is right on the money here. Nintendo was pretty adamant that at E3 they were only showing games that would be released within a year from E3. So I expect unless Pikmin came together hugely a month after E3 (since the Eurogamer interview was from July), I'd have thought it'd have been at E3. So I think it's next Summer at the earliest, which in realist terms means expect an NX launch title late next year at best, be happily surprised if it's cross-console or Wii U only (in which case we'd potentially get it Summer or Fall) at worst. If it is cross-console, though, I doubt it'd come to Wii U before NX, as that'd take the wind out of the launch lineup's sails, so in that case I still don't think we'd see it till November 2016.

I seem to be missing where he suggests Pikmin is for 2016. He says it's a series he'd like to expand, but says his focus this year is on Starfox. To me, that just means Pikmin could come any year after 2015.

Right, it just depends on how eagerly you read into his statement and the inflection on "this year" ... in Japanese. So who knows exactly how he said it. But, doesn't hurt to hope ;)

Easy rebuttal: Nintendo never made any sense.

Sure. But speculation is fun!

Or perhaps the E3 this year was exactly what Iwata and Trinen announced it would be about prior to E3? And nothing else? But that is too far fetched?

Nintendo actually makes lot of sense, if anyone would actually listen to what they say.

Miyamoto hinted the next iteration of Pikmin almost a year ago to the shareholders. Similarly, Nintendo will most probably bring DLC to current Wii U titles that currently don't have DLC. And so on.

Nintendo was pretty adamant that at E3 they were only showing games that would be released within a year from E3.

Trinen said that E3 2015 would be about "games for the 3DS and Wii U launching in 2015 and eeeaaarly 2016". That can't be interpreted as a full year from E3.

If it is an NX game there is no point in announcing it now. They would have saved the announcement for the announcement of NX, as a surprise. It makes no sense to be announced now as a NX game. 0.

These are both very good points. Thank you. The only outstanding factor to me is that I feel like Miyamoto marches to the beat of his own drum, so he might well indicate a sequel is coming, even if for NX, and not really think twice about it as an issue. That's pure speculation on my part, of course. I'd be thrilled for it to be a Wii U game as long as it didn't sell terribly as a result and get the series shelved for a time.

(jariw, what additional DLC do you think we might see for Wii U games?)

Given that most of the development teams at Nintendo have readjusted with creating games on the Wii U hardware, as well as working on games with high definition assets, do you think that Pikmin 4 will look a lot better than it's predecessor?

If it's on the Wii U, expect a lot of reused assets.
