Monster Hunter XX Demo coming August 10th

Those are some crisp, colorful graphics. Geometry and textures obviously come from a different era, but it looks really nice beyond that.

In Brave you have an extra meter that fills up from attacks. Before it's full you have a limited moveset. When you sheath you glow blue and hold a stance for a bit (or longer if you hold the button). If you hold the stance longer you'll start losing stamina and taking recoverable damage. If you attack while in the brave stance you'll do special brave cancel attacks that fill up your meter way faster than normal attacks. If you're hit while holding a brave stance you'll do a crazy ass evasion move with almost no recovery time but still take damage as if you guarded it. This essentially means that in Brave style every weapon can guard. When your meter is full you'll go into brave mode and get a fucking crazy moveset while the meter drains slowly.
Thanks. I wouldn't have known about the holding part without you.

Before I read this, I was doing brave Gunlance to see if I could figure stuff out. All I noticed was the blue glow on my shots after the meter filled. Gonna have a lot of reading to do soon. I don't know if being able to continuously fire shots is new to the Gunlance or just a brave style thing, but it was great (especially when the brave meter is active).

Haven't bothered with Valfalk yet. Barioth is my favorite monster, so I've just been warming up with him.

Man it's been a little while since I last hunted, but that was pretty damn fun. Still getting used to Valphalk, but hammer is every bit as fun as I remember. Gotta try out Hunting Horn, Switch Axe, and a few others sooner or later.

Rapidfire shelling is a brave thing but you need to have a combo going in order to do it so even X,A,A,A,A, will suffice. You also get a guard point on your reload so if you see an attack coming your way, you can reload (R+B) to guard and follow it up with a slam+full burst.

Oh sick I'm gonna buy the game anyway but might as well play the demo. Haven't played MonHan since 4 (not 4G) and haven't actually really put time into one since Freedom Unite on PSP.

I just made this using the Switch screenshot editor. Hope this helps.

Am I missing where to see what my songs are with the hunting horn? I can't access the equipment option, and I don't see a playlist anywhere.

Luckily I'm a big HH fan, so I know what I'm doing, but I can't remember every song for every weapon.

Man, I don't even know what brave and renkin styles do, haha. I've only done two missions so far with my usual playstyle: guild HH and adept HBG.
White blue blue is defense
White green blue is negate stamina use
White green white is health recovery S
Blue blue green is wind pressure negated
Some other combination is health recovery s+antidote, not that it's needed against these monsters
And of course white white is self-improvement.

Edit: green blue white blue, that's it. For health recovery S+antidote.

This game looks very clean and vibrant on the switch screen.

Also, can we talk more about the HD RUMBLE implementation as it's surprisingly well done! Here's my experience with it:

The first time the rumble triggered for me was when I used the Switch Axe and hit the Great Maccao with the "Trance Slash" Hunter Art and it felt POWERFUL! It was then that I had a very strong urge to use the weapon attack with arguably the most satisfying single hit in all of monster hunter, the level 3 Greatsword charge attack, and to experience it alongside the HD rumble. However, the rumble only triggers when you hit a monster with a Hunter Art but thankfully the Greatsword is equipped with the "Lion's Maw" Art in the demo which powers up your next regular attack.

This is what I felt like when I executed a level 3 charge attack, powered up with the Lion's Maw so it triggers the HD rumble, for the first time:

I think that HD rumble might be one of the secret best features of the switch version. Be sure to try it out in the demo for yourself!

I was actually confused for a second when a monster roared and my "3DS" rumbled.
I miss Bleach.

I wish I could say that I beat the rocket dragon on my first try after 15 months of not touching Generations, proudly announcing that I still got it. But I can't, the time ran out right when we has weak.

In light of MHW it's difficult to be excited for any other MH title.
I haven't followed japanese news, but are there titles planned beyond MHW only for nintendo?
Or do we have an idea if multiplatform is the future for MH?

I don't think it has HD Rumble, just regular rumble, unless I'm missing something.

Yep, it's classic MonHun. Load times and transition times are appropriately short given its last (last?) generation assets and geometry, IQ looks very clean at least.

100% would've bought it if it got a western release this fall to hype me up for World next year.

Oh well.

Textures look pretty good to me, not next gen or anything but way above what we've had the past few years. Monsters always looked good though.

Geometry is really the thing thats garbo.

I miss Bleach.

Wait, the 3DS has rumble functionality?

The early seasons of Bleach were so good but the quality declined as it progressed. However, even though the series eventually became a mess it still had great moments sprinkled throughout.

R.I.P Bleach.

I don't think it has HD Rumble, just regular rumble, unless I'm missing something.

I see. It might just be me but I feel that the joy-cons generally have a nicer, more deeper rumble compared to other standard controllers.

Tried the demo earlier but with 0 Japanese comprehension I didn't play very much. I will say it felt like the game was 60 fps when docked (with some hitches/drops ofc) and I was very surprised at how smooth the camera felt. Hope we get a US demo soon.

It'll have to be announced for the west and close release date for a soon demo unfortunately

Is there a way to switch L&R for ZL&ZR? Currently ZR is mapped to lock on and ZL nothing. L is Item switch and R is run (special) but they're both in an awkward position on Switch, ZL& ZR would make more sense.

This is my first time playing a MH game. I tried using the charge axe but after a while, there is a "No Charge" red text flashing and I can't hit anything any more. How do I charge?

I think you mean the Charge Blade. If I remember correctly, you press X+A to generate phials to get rid of your built up charge.

Fairly sure there was an option to do that in TriU, but no idea if it's in the demo out where you'd find it in the Japanese menus.

Pretty sure the texts read Charge Axe but yeah, that works. Thanks

Oh, I think you're actually using the Switch Axe but it's called Charge Axe in Japan.

It's a little confusing when there's two weapons that switch between an axe and sword: Charge Blade and Switch Axe.

Edit: I got it wrong, read below.

No, they're using the charge blade. In Japan the weapon we know as the switch axe is called the slash axe and the weapon we know as the charge blade is called the charge axe.

It's not in the demo but it's be interesting to see if it's in the full release.

btw, here's a video that might be useful to people. It covers camera speed and map zooming etc. I wonder how we'll be able to switch the lock-on between two monsters in same area.

Look more complicated than it is

If that's from 4U, some of it is outdated. CB functions were changed in X/XX to not be so powerful, like the GP into AED/SAED combo.

Press + button to open up the menu. From here, the R button will toggle between the normal menu and the song list. This doesn't reset, so if you back out from here with B and then go back in with +, you'll still pull up the song list. It's really nice.

There's nothing like that in the options as far as I can tell. Here are the button mapping options on Page 3, third from bottom:
Type 1: Directional buttons for hunter arts, ZR for chat, ZL for toggling monster target.
Type 2: R+A+B, ZL and ZR for hunter arts, directional buttons for chat and toggling monster target (down direction).
Type 3: ZL+X/A/B for hunter arts, ZR for chat, right stick press for toggling monster target, directional buttons for camera control.
It's not in the demo but it's be interesting to see if it's in the full release.

Good video. One extra thing to note: you can swap the - and + buttons (options Page 3, second from bottom) so that it's easier to kick.

I mean, all of this is extremely familiar territory. I haven't touched Monster Hunter since 3U near the WiiU launch and beat the bird with the Longsword loadout in ~8 minutes.

Still torn whether I should just enjoy the demo and play as much as I can or just delete it because it reminds me of the sadness that this won't be coming over before World releases next year.

I must be going crazy here but the game felt more sluggish than Generation on 3DS.
On 3DS I was absolutely fine with the 30fps but this demo felt extremely slow.
Other than that, I love the super sharp visual

I had the opposite impression, I was kind of surprised by how responsive the combat was despite it being locked to 30fps. Then again I haven't touched the 4th Gen games in a long while, I only played emulated MHP3rd over the last six months (needs also to be hardlocked to 30fps, runs at double speed if increased to 60fps), which probably feels sluggish in comparison because the moveset is so much more reduced than it is in MHXX.
