well I probably would have never seen this movie if it wasn't for GAF. I saw the blu-ray version of it a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. considering to buy it

Such a great movie , just watched it recently - my freind bought the blu-ray for 15$.
Didnt realize that Sam Rockwell was the crazy moonpie spitter from the green mile =P

Im good with faces , not names :)

If you guys are at all into Sam Rockwell, Choke is one of my favorite movies in recent memory. It's based on a Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) book (I've been meaning to get it). I liked Moon and I liked Choke even more. Britta from Community (nude) and Bram from Lost are in it too, if that helps anyone.

boobs!

Sam Rockwell probably should have been nominated for this, really good stuff from him. And the soundtrack was excellent. Particularly this track. My favorite scene being when he calls home.

I don't think sony submitted this film for consideration
that's what I had heard anyway

wow, good movie.

at first i thought his reactions to things were a little mild, but considering the whole picture, it's probably most realistic that way.

I think he wanted him to be crazy.

i thought the
clones
message was really powerful. to know that
eternal hell
is artificially possible

but for what youre looking for, have you seen 'sphere'? you might enjoy it. i saw it as a kid though so it might of been a bad movie, i dunno.

I don't want it to be a cult classic. I'm fine with it being an excellent film that hardly anyone's seen.

I... what?
Why do people agree with this? So they can be the 'in the know' guy who can recommend it to people? I hope more people watch it, it deserves success.

I just saw it last week. I love the way they maintain the mood the whole way through. I don't understand people wanting some big climax at the end, it would've felt cheesy and ruined it.

Incidentally that's how I feel about District 9, though I've met very few people who agree.

the mood is definitely one of the best parts of this movie.

feels kinda metroid with the isolation. except with way more isolation.

the mood of moon

moon mood

moonood

and im listening to the OST now on youtube and wow, i didnt realize it was this good. :D

For this fortnight I've had four films to watch.

In the done pile:

When We Were Kings

To go:

Moon (obviously)
Book of Eli
The Road

Really looking forward to Moon. Will post impressions post event.

I rewatched this recently. It's so good. It's amazing. I don't care if it doesn't become a cult classic. I'm just glad to have it. Maybe it'd get people asking "What's Moon?"

Instantly became one of my top 5 movies. Sam Rockwell is amazing. If you haven't seen Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, go watch. I didn't think he could top that performance, but he did in Moon.

This was one of those movies I had for 2 months from Netflix before I got around to watching it.

SO glad I did. Best movie I've seen in a while.

Yeah man, good stuff. I listen to it a lot whilst Photoshopping.

Love the movie, too. Definitely one of my favs from last year.

Finally watched this on Monday. I went into it not knowing anything about it other than that it came highly recommended and was written and directed by Bowie Jr.

Both the main feature and the short film "Whistle" were great. Just the sort of Sci-fi I love.

Yeah, it is. And ugh, you know what the problem with searching YouTube for "Moon Soundtrack" is? That you end up with a lot of results for "Twilight: New Moon". But I found a user with what seems to be a good playlist. UGGO87.

Saw this movie a few weeks back. I liked it a lot. I've always been a fan of Sam Rockwell, and it's great to see him in a starring role. Really great story and acting.

Moon being a really good movie is going to kill Book of Eli for you. The Road should survive though.

I just watched this, good movie. I just wish the guy who recommended it did not say
"Moon is a great movie about clones." I had the plot figured out in 2 minutes =P The only annoyance was the fact the system broke down so early. The daughter looked like she was in her teens so I figure it was about 15 or so years, 5 Sams. I expected them to find other Sams working in different areas all over the moon. I pictured three of them talking together. This made me think of the Calvin and Hobbs time travel bit :D Anyway....

I will be recommending this but telling people to go in blind.

I didn't know that's what it was about
I thought the whole movie was going to play on the "is he imagining this guy?" road
and even then it was clear as few minutes in that the whole thing is not a twist at all
you are pretty much supposed to know that it is indeed a clone right away
.

Movie is on Netflix instant watch. Just saw it and really liked it.

The feeling of isolation this movie exudes fits the weather outside. Recommended :D

Then there's all the miscellaneous random things that don't make any practical sense like:
- Making the clones suffer at the end of their "contract" even though they're going to be incinerated anyway.

This is an old post but I google searched neogaf's Moon thread and the first search result was page 10. I ran across the above post and I want to comment that I don't think
the company is intentionally making the clones suffer near the end of their contracts. I think that the lifeshelf of these clones is literally around 3 years. Whatever the fabrication process, these clones can only last three years before they start becoming incredibly weak and fatigued and sick. And so whenever that time rolls around when the clone becomes useless, they bring out the "space pod," make the clone think heh's getting a ride back home, and then incinerate him
.

I just watched this movie and I loved it.

edit: Aaaand this was discussed to death a few pages ago anyway.

Here's how I see the entire story:

LOOP A:
At some point in the future, Sam Bell A is hired at Lunar Industries to go to the moon for a 3 year contract to harvest helium for sending to Earth. He is to be there 3 years, after which he will come home and be replaced. He won't get to meet the replacements, but is assured they will be coming.

Secretly, Lunar takes his DNA and sends it to the moon either with him or before he gets there and uses it to create a secret army of clones. Sam A does not know about the clones.

While on the moon, Sam A lives a normal life working day in and day out running the machinery used for the harvest. At some point(s) he gets transmissions from his family. They're one-way only of course.

After his 3 years are up, Sam A goes home and lives a normal life with his family. His daughter, a child, and his wife.

About 15 years later, his daughter recieves a call from Sam Y and is confused....

LOOP B:
The moon base wakes up a clone and it is named Sam B.

Sam B wakes up in the medical ward and is told he was in a crash. Not knowing he's a clone, he assumes he is just the same Sam as Sam A. He lives out the same routine as Sam A. Gets the same video call. After at most three years, possibly less depending on the clone, instead of going home, he dies because he is programmed to fall apart. He is disposed of and loop B ends.

LOOP C through X: (Since we do not know how many it goes through before the one we see.)
These loops are the same as loop B and continue until just before the loop we see in the movie.

Loop Y:
This is the loop we see in the film. Sam Y is living a normal life on the moon until he gets in an accident and Sam Z is activated.

Sam Y starts falling apart as Z is at first confused as to who this other Sam is and why he's here. They find the clone farm and figure everything out. Sam Y sends a transmission to Earth and talks to his daughter who is now 15 or so years older. Thus revealing that yes, it is not the same year you thought it was, Sam. It is much later.

Sam Z, who is still perfectly fine sneaks into the Helium ship and is blasted to Earth while Sam Y is found dead by the crewmen who are sent to dispose of him and fix the vehicles.

Sam Z goes to the media and exposes Lunar Industries for who they are, of course some pundits don't believe he's a clone, think it's a joke, all the normal shit we'd have to put up with if it were real life. Conspiracy, whatever. If it were real life, Lunar would probably not even take a dent either. But that's life. Probably just a slap on the wrist for playing God.

We don't get to see the aftermath, the reaction from Sam A and his family, just a bunch of audio clips from news shows talking about what has happened.

Once again, amazing movie. I can't wait to watch it again.

New Sam seemed to figure out the clone thing pretty quickly. Why did he accept it so fast when Old Sam was in denial?

We do know how many cycles have occurred. Those messages from Tess were for the original Sam. Eve was maybe ~3 years old when he left, and she was 15 when this story takes place, so there have been about 4 cycles of 3 years.

Of course, the question is why would any company bother to do this. The cost of growing, storing, and implanting memories in all of those clones is surely higher than the cost of hiring some single guy for ~2 year contracts of work.

New Sam 'just' arrived. He didn't spend 3 years living a lie (just 'born' one)

good timing for a bump, i just watched this two days ago.

Actually, watched isn't the right term, it was on tv but i was doing other things so i just listened to the second half without even knowing what movie it was, but i thought it sounded like a good movie :)

Since i wasn't watching it i paid special attention to dialogues and music and noticed how much soundtrack-driven every scene was and I correctly guessed the score was by Clint Mansell.

Very good OST, Mass Effect 3 could be epic with Mansell composing the music.

Is it the movie about a lonely man in a moon station ?

Can't find it anywhere in Europe, I guess I'll have to import the BR...

is it really worth it ?

Anyone else noticed how many similarities this movie has to Gattaca?

I'm guessing the cost of launching a man-occupied vessel to the moon and back every two years would have been cost prohibitive

Yes it's amazing, one of the best scifi movies in years.

Dammit I was about to comment this exact response.

Except how do they explain to people who sends the HE3 back to Earth? Also, it appears that they're able to send a whole crew of guys to handle problems on a moment's notice, so it's definitely not an issue of capability. As for cost it's tough to say if their method is really that much cheaper. It would depend on how often they have to send people to do maintenance anyways, since those would be opportune times to swap crew.

It's established in the opening narration that the entire world economy is dependent on the mines. It's not an operation where anyone would be that hard up for cash.

And why would you need to send a replacement every two years?
Non-clones can survive a lot longer than a clone, after all.

It's explained in the opening clip, "The energy of the sun, trapped in rock, harvested by machine from the far side of the moon." It's actually kind of clever in how it completely omits any mention of human involvement on the moon.
