I just want to know what's up with the red phone boxes. Do they make a comeback in the future?

I was thinking the same thing. And the Dick Van Dyke shitty English accents are well appreciated. Good to see the effort put in there.

"If NeoGAF existed when Diablo 2 came out... wait, hell, if the gaming public was like it is now when Diablo 2 came out or Diablo 2 was just on it's way out now, we'd be hearing the same complaint. And I'd still be sitting here with a buck fifty just for lifetime access."

GAF did exist when Diablo II came out. No complaints were made.

no. at the end of the day it's about value. and at the end of the day, spending an extra 10 dollars every month on top of the original value of the game has yet to be justified on either side of the equation. this game is poorly planned and poorly developed and a massive failure.
So basically, it's like your presence in this thread.

As you may have realized by now, massive, crippling differences between the available equipment exist(ed) in your imagination, but not necessarily in Hellgate.
You now have such a nice backpedaling trajectory going on. Make full use of it.

my presence? that's pretty weak.

What else can be said? You DON'T have to pay the extra money if you don't want to. You can enjoy a significantly stripped down version of the game subscription free.

Personally, I thought the demo was very poor, and the subscription model sticks in my craw (and I'm a dude who's been paying for WOW for over 2 years), so I'll just be skipping H:L altogether.

I just think we really have to see the game and what it has vs. the subscription model for now, before really making the call. I remember arguments over Bioshock being gimped cause it had plasmid content on the disk that might be DLC, yet the game was completely satisfying on it's own.

It's only 39.99 at Circuit City... and they had a parody of Wirt's leg?

Oh snap... at $40 I'm more tempted to buy it! It's hard to explain ( as I've never played D or D2 ) but I want to like this game, just not sure if I will. With the amount of games coming out next month, I don't know if this will get sufficient play time for me to actually like it :(.

I'd say to give the Single Player Demo a try then. I'm right there with you, with this, UT3, and Crysis, not to mention the boatload of PSP, DS, 360 and Wii games this season it's gonna be hard to find time. I was gonna disregard this one before the price drop, and buy it at a less busy time, but I figure it will be a good 3 - 5 months before it drops to 29.99 unless their subscriber model takes off.

I think it's worth it from what I've played. It's entertaining, the scaled difficulty/rewards in multiplayer is fun, and elite mode is shaping up to be really challenging.

The only thing I don't like about the whole subscription model is that hardcore mode (permadeath - which is actually one of the most fun ways to play Diablo 2) is subscription only. Even so I'm probably not going to subscribe until I see the first new content patch, to see what kind of new stuff my $10/mo is going to deliver.

When I think about all the entertainment value I got out of Diablo 2... if this is even half that it's worth $40 easily.

it's kind of hard to look at your game in any other way while you're carrying some cardboard sword and some guy whose spent a useless 40 dollars extra on his copy runs around with the demon slaying death monkey machine +35677770000.

you kind of feel ripped off.
You kind of feel hyperboled. With firey, raging insanity.

You keep saying the free version of the game ain't worth bothering with, but you can't say why, because you have nothing but hyperbole. And no, firey, raging insanity doesn't count.

oh no! i'm sorry hyperbole offends you!

shame my argument still stands despite the horribly offensive hyperbole. 10 dollars a month for stronger equipment, more classes and more quests tosses the free players into an oblivion of poor customization choices and lack of depth. 10 dollars a month for equipment that looks different but is exactly the same statistically as well as quests that offer virtually the same rewards as free quests and classes that add no depth to the game tosses paying 10 dollars a month into the "why would you pay for that?" column.

no matter how you slice it and dice it, this game is not worth paying 10 dollars a month extra for. 10 dollars on top of the sale price? maybe even 20? sure. but A MONTH? NO. absolutely and unequivocally not.

hopefully there isn't much hyperbole in there that will harm your soul and place a dark mark on you.

This pricing model kind of reminds me Dungeon Runners. You can play the same game, do the same quests, but then that cool weapon drops that only "members" can use. Doh. I kept collecting all these goofy items that I couldn't take it anymore and signed up for the membership.

It was only 5 bucks a month but after about two months, I quit. Even at that price, there wasn't anything that really justified me paying a monthly price. I feel that I got my money's worth since the game was free and ten bucks for two months is fine. I wonder if the same will be true for Hellgate? I wonder if 60 dollars (game + 2 to 3 months) will be worth it?

What people are really complaining about is the developing caste system. You can have a game where nobody pays a subscription or a game where everybody pays a subscription, but in a game where only a small portion pays the subscription, you create a situations where there are haves and have-nots.

It's not even about what Hellgate is actually doing, but the possibilities that could arise from such a system. Will the haves even want to play with the have-nots? I mean, you need an "elite" player to even start and manage a guild - what incentive does he have to let in a have-not who won't be able to participate in all the content (no doubt especially high level content) or be able to be equipped with competitive level gear?

Beyond just the basic pain in the ass aspect of taking basic, fundamental features and making you pay extra for them, the very fact that they are segmenting the playerbase and still letting them intermingle, is just asking for trouble. If the freemen and the money bags each had separate servers, I don't think there'd be nearly the trouble. It's about me not being able to be as good as the guy standing right next to me without paying money. That stuff attacks one's self esteem directly. Screw the loot. It's about feeling like a man. Flagship has taken that away from a lot of players.
