Gamespot Interview

The game's story is still being kept under wraps but, generally speaking, a cataclysmic event causes the DCU and MK universe to start merging. This provides the perfect setup for the game's story mode, which will offer two perspectives on the situation. You'll be able to play through two separate storylines, one from each side, which lay out what the heck is going on. The cataclysm in the story is driven by magic, which is a handy device that is tapped for the gameplay. The mystic elements that run through the story help keep the fighting balanced as it helps make a conflict between Superman, whose only vulnerability is magic, and characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, actually make some sense.

The other key element to the game is balancing the game mechanics to ensure the whole experience plays well. As if sweating the roster and story weren't enough, Boon and his ambitious team have opted to revamp the whole fighting system for MK's next gen debut. This has led to a "clean slate" approach that has the team re-examining every aspect of the combat system. While you'll see some hints as to what's going on with the fighting system in the teaser trailer

The three major ones that are ready to be discussed are Klose Kombat, Freefall Kombat, and stage interaction.

Klose Kombat is a mode you'll initiate which pulls in the camera in close and has its own separate mechanics. Basically, when you initiate the mode you'll be the aggressor and your opponent will be on defense. In this closer view you'll be able to attack your foe's upper body with different types of blows for a set period of time, the exact duration of which is still being ironed out. To keep things fair, your opponent will be able to perform a number of different defensive moves to dodge your attacks, provided they're fast.

Freefall Kombat is another change of pace, tied in part to stage interaction. The mode is another player initiated sequence which is kicked off by you flinging your foe off a stage. Unlike previous games you won't just follow them down or watch yourself drop. Instead the camera willl come in and you'll be able to fight on the way down. You'll have a slightly tweaked set of possible attacks in this mode, much like Klose Kombat. From what we've seen, it appears your big motivation in these sequences is to gain the advantage on the way down and land on your opponent, for an added damage bonus. Part of this mode is tied to the stages, which appear to feature a different basic design than the previous games. The fighting areas will be a bit wider, to support throwing your opponent through walls and, in some cases, much taller, to allow enough time for fighting during freefall.

A more potentially controversial change to the system is the game's fatalities. According to Boon, there will definitely be fatality-like finishing moves, but they may not be called fatalities. After all, it's doubtful that Superman or Batman would be ripping out anyone's spines or hearts. That said, the team is hellbent on pushing the limits to what they can do with the DC characters, so you can expect to see blood and some level of damage accumulate during a fight.

According to the Boon interview, the abilities of the MK characters are "enchanced" so that they can stand up to the level of the DC characters. He also touched on the Superman vs magic weakness and pointed of that a lot of the MK universe is based around that anyway.

Since they have DC writers on the team to keep things believeable, it might not be that bad.

That settles that.

Again with canon etc shit.

Who gives a fuck? "Oh but how can misturigi katana stop Darth Vader's lightsaber, it's impossible bla bla bla"

Does that really matter? At all? :lol :lol

The hate has been there since yesterday..
Always the same thing, with every game..

First trailer/pic:
"Oh, [Insert company name here] what have you done??!?!?! You just lost me as a fan"

A few months later:
"Oh, I always loved this game. I've been defending it since day one"

A year later:
Submits thread: Late to the Party: [Insert name of a game here]

Happens with every game..so the over-reactions are no surprise, but quite common.

"Wat?? Cel-shadded Zelda? LOLol Celda??!?!1"
-A few years later; is the best Zelda game ever made..

"Butbu..look at the faces of Ryu and Ken..dissapointmeton!!!"
A few months later; can't wait for the best fighter game ever conceived..
Or Deus Ex 2 oh wait! Guess not.

At least some sort of fataility system is in place and there is blood, thats confirmed. I just wish the fighting was faster..everything just seems so clunky still. I HATE THAT.

Watched the trailer...doesnt look terrible. It could actually be decent if they nail the art direction...the potential for awesome IS there...I highly doubt it tho. >_> Its really hard to tell with the shitty quality of the vid just how bad the graphics are and you really cant tell if they kept the same gawdawful fighting system from Deception/armaggedon/whateverthefuck. Oh well we will see in a couple hours!

i think they did, none of the move seem to flow at all, same as those games.

I don't care personally, I only brought it up because yesterday people were on the "Well no one can beat Superman!" kick.

If you actually read the thread, you'd know that my reply then was pretty much: "It's a game, duh"

I just don't like the way it looks at all. It comes off as genuinely ugly. And why did Batman/Subzero sound identical as they were changing blows? :lol

Also, for not having as much blood it's still pretty brutal. I don't see how you have a teen rating with blows and crunches like that.

This has led to a "clean slate" approach that has the team re-examining every aspect of the combat system. While you'll see some hints as to what's going on with the fighting system in the teaser trailer, Boon himself offered us a clearer picture of what's going on. The multiple fighting styles and weapon systems from previous games are out and a more-visceral, brutal approach to fighting is in. MK vs. DCU will introduce several new elements that the team is hoping will make battles more dynamic.
Best thing they could've ever done.

I just realised.

Marvel went against Street Fighter

Now DC is going against MORTAL KOMBAT, which was like, SF's main rival.

The game may or may not suck, but it's cool that such a parallel EXISTS.

Did Deus Ex 2 really piss people off with their first screenshots? I thought it was only the final product that angered many.
Can't remember about the first screenshots but I remember people comenting how the quality kept decreasing with each following release and the whole Xbox "lead platform" fiasco. Anyway Deus Ex 2 was just the first game that came to mind.

Is anyone doubting that whenever this crossover ends (maybe this game, maybe after a direct sequel) that Midway won't make a huge deal about 'the REAL return of Mortal Kombat -- blood and fatalities!' They can't loose, really. If this game tanks, then they bring back old school Mortal Kombat and that's a news story right there. "Wait, fatalities and blood are back? Man, I may have to check this one out." That's exactly how it's going to play out from here. Even if this one does well, Midway has an out for another one by making it seem like this was a crazy experiment, which it is.

You said that already. ;)

Shit, after eight more pages, this is a whole new thread son!

(Plus I think it's a valid point no one seems to be understanding. Midway can't really loose here. But DC can.)

Increased Sales-alities!

Where-in the character is "killed" at the end of the match, but returns six months later to keep the copyrights and trademarks!

Wow this is terrible.

DC just can't catch a break on the video game side. :(

I hope this game is a huge success and spawns many more VS games. Including:

MK vs Def Jam

MK vs Epic Games

MK vs Alien vs Predator vs Terminator

MK vs UFC

oh the possibilities are endless

How would it hurt DC? Its not like there are an abundant of good DC related games. Marvel Vs Capcom was an odd idea as well, and it had no negative impacts on Marvel.

Ok, sorry to hate, but that looks like crap, and it looks like Deception all over. Everything feels the same, hopefully the fighting system really is new. And, when I think MK vs DC, I think of pretty HD 2d sprites with 3d backgrounds, not this, I see Deception and every other excuse of a Mortal game after IV.

And since this is one huge thread, is this MK8 or is this just a sideshow of the series?

The reason X-Men vs. Street Fighter worked is because Capcom took the time to develop a fighting game for both franchises FIRST, then collide them into one game. So the transition was pretty smooth. I don't know how well this MK Vs. DC one is going to work out, but at least they seem to be trying new things with the air combat and "klose" kombat. Everyone knows fighting games need more innovation, so I'll applaud these ideas at this time, even if they turn out to be total shit.

Am I the only one though who thinks the graphics look pretty crappy? I know it's early, but they looked surprisingly weak.

When was the last time there was a good DC game? They can't lose either, their reputation is already shot.

The reason it worked is because it was fun. It doesn't matter how they got there.

Because if DC fails here it'll leave a large stink that will put them back another 5-10 years from REALLY creating a great DC game. Yes, they've failed in the past, but that doesn't mean they have nothing to loose when they put Superman and Batman in a game of Mortal Kombat.

Look at what happened to Star Wars after that p.o.s. Master of Tera Kasi. Never saw another Star Wars fighting game again. Same will happen with DC if this is horrible. But I bet we'll see another Mortal Kombat game no matter what.

And X-Men Vs. Street Fighter was fun (duh) because Capcom took the time to nail the gameplay with the X-Men characters by having a trial run in Children of the Atom. It wasn't their first stab at putting X-Men characters in a fighting game when they put them up against Street Fighter. Therefore, it was that more polished and refined. Something DC won't have here.
