Mortal Kombat Demo impressions thread

Amazon finally sold out of the Tournament Editions. Glad I got my preorder in :D
Darn.
I've been looking around for an under $100 joystick with bat-top stick for PS3. But everything so far seems to be over $200 and that one was the "cheapest" one, but it also included the game and I already have the Kollector's preordered.

I guess I'll have to end ordering a Hori and a replacement stick, and try to change it. :p

I like to ask myself two questions when it comes to any particular fighting game:

1) Is it fun?
2) Is it fair?

If the answer is "yes" to both, I definitely consider it a good fighting game. The two are sometimes interrelated, but not always. Occasionally, the answer to #2 has been "no" and I've still considered it a good fighting game.

People overthink these things and give too much weight to the top 1% of 1% that play fighting games on a near-professional basis. Just my 2 cents.

Wow. Confirmation on this? Validity?

I've never heard of such a MAJOR part of a product being stripped because of used sales.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened.

See: Almost all recent EA games.

It's going to come with a free lifetime online pass with new copies... So no biggie.

EA has been doing it (Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, etc.), even Sony did it with ModNation on the PSP. And some other games/companies too.

Their excuse is 50% used game sales and 50% piracy/cheating/etc. And charge up to $10 to play online if you don't put that code.

Now, in this case it hasn't been confirmed, but neither has been announced or denied yet.

EDIT:
This one is also the first (based on the description) to include a"free trial period".

Yeah, but EA is on a small scale, like Cerberus wasn't a whole game mode like online play.

That's half the package gone for used gamers.

It just seems silly to get offended when someone tells you that a fighting game system is shallow compared to so-and-so, if you're not even concerned about how deep it is. Just continue to enjoy the game for the storyline, fatalities, etc. Leave the discussion about fighting game mechanics to the people who care about it.

Granted this game isn't even out yet. There are no comparisons to be made.

Dead Space 2 (from EA) was like that too. Online multiplayer is not available if you don't use the code. ModNation PSP (Sony) is the same, and that's a game that relies on downloading and sharing content with others online.

These guys are going to allocate time and money for patches and balance updates as well as servers, its a service that they are offering.

EA locks online content.
THQ too.

Nothing new. =/

The EA Online Pass is used for a number of their games (Need For Speed, Dead Space 2, Tiger Woods, Madden, etc), and it's required for any online play in those games.

Is the demo 2 player? Are there any good vids up of two somewhat good players going at it?
Yeah, the demo also offers 2 players mode. Haven't seen good videos, tough is not like I've looked. :p

This may sounds weird, but I find streetfighter to be more noobfriendly and accesible than mortal kombat. In sf, I can pick any character, just see their special move which usually is not many, then just try button combination and I can find decent combos.

In mk, I feel like I have to know their special moves, normals and combo string before I can feel like i'm playing it properly or have fun out of it.

I was tempted, but I want to see how it controls with the regular DS3 first before committing an extra $100. If necessary, hopefully they start to sell the sticks individually, or maybe I can track down a used one at some point.

Its cool watching the background of the Pit to see whos fighting. So far ive seen Kenshi, Frost, Sareena, Reiko, and Deagon(however you spell Tavons brothers name) Any other fighters back there like Blaze?

More Noob-tweets... :p
Guess people were still doubting said:
ericmcelrath: can u do a stage fatality in the living forest?
Noobde: Yea, there are quite a few stage fatalities in the new MK

Noobde: Absolutely

cclarkson24: how will you do the x ray moves on the TE stick?
Noobde: Super easy. Lowest 3 buttons at once.

Holy shit, Kratos' bio and reasoning to take part in Mortal Kombat is so fucking awesome!

Ancient Greece knew no more bloodthirsty a warrior than Kratos, who for a time was the God of War. Mortal once more, Kratos withdrew from the ages-old clash between men and gods. But his solitude was broken when he was ripped through space and time. As the madness subsided, Kratos found himself in present-day Outworld, kneeling before Shao Kahn. To ensure his victory in Mortal Kombat, the emperor had invoked an ancient ritual, sacrificing the souls of his vanguard to summon and enslave the most powerful warrior of all time. But the spell alone could not contain Kratos, who soon regained his free will. Enraged by Shao Kahn's arrogance, Kratos vowed to rip the warlord's spine from his body. The God of War had returned to battle.
Having Kratos in a Mortal Kombat game makes more sense than having him in a Soulcalibur game. You know, with Soulcalibur not having any gore despite being a weapons-based fighter.

Leaning towards getting the PS3 version atm.

I say way to set the bar so low, by this rule of judgement practically every fighting game is a good fighting game.

Naughty Dog's Way of the Warrior game for 3DO
Hand Made Soft's Kasumi Ninja game or Atari Jaguar
the 3D Fight for Life game for Atari Jaguar
Cosmic Carnage for the 32X
Rise of the Robots
Fighter's Destiny for N64
Kabuki Warriors for XBOX

I hope I can turn up the music volume in the final version...
Yeah, you can. Don't know why they left it at default (and so low) in this demo in the first place. They probably thought that because in the demo-tours/events, the sound from the speakers/TV is really high; that the sound was fine. :p

Which lead to an ultimate question. Are we going to see Kratos get his face eaten off from Mileena? Body chopped in various parts? Frozen and ripped in half? :D

Guess so. You could see him severely beaten at the end of the game (God of War III) too. So the only new thing would be seeing the inside (skeleton, intestines, etc.) :p

Get one of these and replace the stock buttons/stick with parts from here.

Should cost you well under $100 if you nose around and find a good deal on the stock stick.

Thanks.
At least there's a month to go, so I'll use this time to read more, and decide better.

I ordered this bad boy day 1, so if there is any allocation hijinx going on like with the original SF4 TE fightstick, I better get mine.

Spent some time with the demo tonight. For better or worse, they nailed the feel of the early 90s Mortal Kombats. As long as you're comfortable with that, I think there's fun to be had in here. I just wouldn't go in expecting anything else.

DROOLS!!!!! EVERYTHING MUST COME TO AN END!

Am I crazy, or does this not translate well to a stick at all? It seems like this is meant for a pad.

Do you think all the games you listed are fun to play? Why would you not think they are good fighting games if they are fun and categorized in the fighting game genre? To me, a good game is one that I enjoy playing. There are some games that I enjoy that have a lot of depth to them, but there are others that I enjoy that are relatively shallow.

Fighter's Destiny was a good fighting game. The graphics weren't very good though. Even for the time.

Customize the buttons/setup.
Haven't tried yet, but according to posts here and other forums, you don't need to have every button mapped. As long as you have Block, Front/Back Punches and Front/Back Kicks; you'll be fine.

Why are enhanced moves not working? Is there an exact fucking science to the timing of "direction+button+R2"? Pissing me off. It only seems to work when I press the face button before the directional input or something sketchy like that.

Can I make R1 block by any chance? It's what I'm used to in MKII. Add me on PS3 for future MKII + 9 fights.

Pretty sure my copy of DS2 kept telling me I could do a free trial of the online features before I purchased a code.

Is it sad that I have three different versions of MK reserved and paid for, just so I get all the bonuses LOL

I actually thought about doing this at first, to get all three of the classic costumes for Sub Zero, Scorpion, and Reptile, but then I remembered that it would be more work on my part driving two different places to pick up the games. Now I just have two copies coming from Amazon. Figure I can trade one of my Reptile codes for a Sub-Zero with someone here on GAF.

You're spending $180 to get some costumes!? Costumes that most certainly will be available as DLC for a couple of bucks!?

That isn't sad, it's fucking retarded.

Enhanced is basically perform the regular move, the way you always do (like Scorpion's spear is Back, Back, Square); only that at the moment of pressing Square, also press R2. So, in this case it would be Back ,Back, Square+R2. Press both buttons at the same time.

And yeah, you can make R1 to be Block. (Options, Controller, Select Block and press R1)

Really how so, look at it this way. With two versions I get the Kollector Editions which nets me the display bookends to put on my display case and with the TE I get the Joystick, both things as a MK fan I want. Yes that leaves me two extra copies, but I can easily sell those on CL and get most of my dough back, at most I lose $10. Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

How is the 3d? I could see it being really good in this game. Any word on how long this is exclusive to plus memebers?

I played a bit in 3D and too be honest I found it distracting. Its perhaps something I just need to get use to, but it screwed my timing up and I missed combos using it.

Will be released to all PSN members on March 15. No word yet on an Xbox 360 demo.

3D (according to others) seems to be fine, since the focus is on the characters, and the depth effect is nice; while the overall game still looks clean enough so that non-glasses players or people watching can see the action just fine.
