Mortal Kombat Demo impressions thread

Ahaha! Seems like you didn't play previous mk's online.

No way it's gonna be sf4 quality, even at best.

We can hope they'll make the netcode not be terrible. They've only had 3 games with online play so far and Mk vs DC wasn't completely awful compared to, say, MvC3.

You might as well say "You must have not played previous MK games. No way it's going to be a good game/good fighting game."

This whole game is about surprising people with quality.

I have an unhealthy obsession with this thread and the game in general. I don't recall checking a thread this often since probably the Halo 2 days. I want to know more. It's weird that there are still unknowns and we're less than 2 weeks from release.

So back in the MK2 days, I didn't have a "main". I'm a random select guy. There's too many characters to do that off the bat here, but my mains will probably be the entire MK2 crew - and I'll pick up one at a time.

I'm thinking I'll start with Ermac or Smoke, but maybe I'll just use Random Select once and go from there.

From my experience MkvsDC online was hillarious. The netcode created a magicland of glitches. The things I did with Kano and his cannonball were ridiculous. It was awesome for a laugh, but no serious play.

Serious play was already a joke because of the close-quarters mini-game and the air fighting crap.

The team's previous efforts don't inspire much confidence, but I do hope online is solid. My local bros probably aren't picking this up, so I'll need to rely on online play to get better :/

Why would I say that? Nonsense. When I'm talking about online I don't mean anything else.

There will be meltdown when online won't be stellar like always and tons of trolls that were just looking for such occasion will have their go.

When the game got first announced there were a few articles about them focusing very hard around online play, and hiring new people who had experience with such stuff.

That, combined with WB money, I would imagine the online will be a step up from DC. I do hope they keep those crazy 100 person lobby/chat room thing they had from that game though, that was neat.

I'm just not holding my breath. I buy this game for characters and sp content so I won't have a meltdown and post stuff like: "Fu NRS! I'm cancelling my preorder/ebaying this shit." if netcode will turn out to be crap. Shit like this happens all the time.

Does anyone know if the Tournament Edition box art is the same as the regular version? Amazon isn't doing street date shipping for the Tournament Edition so I'm thinking of picking it up on day-one, playing that copy, then use the receipt to get a refund for the copy that comes with the Tournament Edition.

I don't want to wait a few days just for a stick that I won't use after Nationals :(

Boon talked a little about the net code in the Giant Bomb interview that was posted last month

Skip to 4:15. He doesn't say much but it shows that they're definitely trying to make it a smooth experience for everyone.

Hopefully it will be much better than MKvsDC, a lot of friends are gonna get the game so I'm definitely interested in online mp.

Also the bit about the love for both console audiences was kinda weird considering that Netherealm is focusing on and promoting heavily the PS3 version, it will be interested to see how the game will do sales-wise on the 360 and what finally will be the exclusive content for MS's platform.

BTW is it confirmed that the 360 is not getting a pre-release demo? I'd like to try the 360 version to see how the game plays with my arcade stick but I guess I'll also wait for impressions on the online side of things to decide which version to get.

Anyone else feel the "Inspired by..." album is a bit lacking in the "inspired by..." department? I mean... Scorpion's track doesn't give me ANY vibe of hell, fire or even scorpions lol. There's also a serious lack of "Get over here!" samplage. But this goes for nearly every track. Reptile's theme is fuck awesome but hardly feels reptillain, swampy, primitive and whatnot. I feel that the album was used as an outlet for these artists to show off their shit instead of actually creating MK tracks.

Also, My brother came up with something and i thought it'd fit as a nice OT title: Mortal Komeback! It is, isn't it?

Any news on MK action figures at the recent toy fair thing? Was it Wondercon? If not... WHY NOT?! This shit should have been set up a long time ago and shouldn't wait on whether the game sells well.

Some may say the same about MK haha. Almost seems like a pic from the past.

Holy shit, I know MUGEN MK games don't have the greatest reputation (and rightfully so), but if there was a new 2D MK game like this....WB can have my money.

How can one play these or something similar?

This is the first Mortal Kombat I can remember playing since the original arcade game, and I likes it. Been playing a lot of SSFIV and MvC3 as of late, and the characters in MK have a weight to them I really enjoy. Of course, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. The movesets are all foreign to me.

Agreed. Although, I have to say, Liu Kang's theme really does make me think of Liu Kang.

I always mained Scorpion in the past, but I played a lot of Sub-Zero too. I'll be expanding my horizons with this game, because all the characters seem really fun to use. Never thought I'd care about Johnny Cage, but the demo sold me on him.

I'll probably break in the game with Saibot.

I want to try out more characters in this game than usual. Ermac, Noob, Cyrax, Sektor, Shang Tsung, Sindel, Kitana, Jade, Kung Lao.

Will probably stick to Ermac unless I'm not feeling it, though.

Not to derail the thread, but how is mk vs. Dc? Does it play like the demo as in terms on framerate and control?
Gamestop has the ps3 version for 10 bucks and I'm tempted to get it.

Spent some time hunting it down.

either deal with some Rapidshare bullshit, or find a single .rar file that goes at 50kb/sec.

I'm going with the latter currently. 4 hour download :C

It's a normal subtitle, not funny, witty, sarcastic or anything, which is why I know many won't like it. :p

But it fits...I think.

GET OVER HERE! the official MK9 thread?

Me three :/

Oh and name the thread "Mortal Kombat |OT| To the emperor's asshole!"

Am I the only on who thought that's what Raiden said in the first MK movie when he is asked "where are they taking Sonya?!"; it's practically an inside joke in our home.

Does anyone else remember how Nintendo justified the censored version of MK1 by calling it the "Competion Edition?" lol That was so lame.

And nearly 2 decades later, Mr Wizard wants to censor the game at evo. Makes sense though, no need wasting time on fatalities when you have a massive bracket to get through.

I'm reminded of this video posted in a thread not too long ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyjQD24B8Ek

It's a video from 93 talking about how one arcade tried to censor MK. When you'd perform a fatality the character would disappear. They noted that sales dropped 40% when they did that.

lol what, you can only disable blood, dirty moves (aka the nut punch) and fatalities.

Ok where can I download that kick ass mugen mk? I have a mame cab and I would LOVE to be able to play this. I tried one before and the difficulty was batshit insane..

As has been the case since MK2, Reptile, my main for MK2 (yikes!) and UMK3 will be the first character I seek to try out. It doesn't help that all the footage seen thus far has done little to showcase what he can really do. So I guess it will really be a thing where if I want to find out what the guy is really made of, I'm going to have to do it myself! :lol

Beyond that, I probably will give almost everyone at least a try. It's a very rare case for me, where it's a fighting game roster where I could stand to try out practically every character. That doesn't happen too much any more, honestly!

Sub-Zero for me. I miss his original stance, but I played him really calm, sitting back and waiting, so I'm okay with defensive, slow Sub.

I'll have to choose a tag partner, which I'm leaning to Mileena, as I loved her playstyle in 2. She and Kitana were my faves after Sub, gameplay-wise. New Kitana doesn't have the same imposing moves from 2, but I'll still check her out some.

Ono(SFFV) Trolling MK fans.

“In Street Fighter when you pull off the Hadoken command you see a fireball, but in Street Fighter philosophy seeing the fireball fly over isn't the main draw, it's the decision making process in when to pull it off - that is what is important. Whereas I think in Mortal Kombat once you pull it off you enjoy the result of what happens with the fireball effect and when you do it doesn't really matter as long as it hits.”

Not MK related but it deals with fighting games and since this is the first fighter I've been looking forward to since being disappointed with Tekken 6, I'll post this little nugget here:

I want a mode in a fighter that lets you choreograph a fight scene and set it to music. You selcet the characters, put them in position then perform a move. Once it's captured, you can switch to the other character and playback the previous move from the other character and set what you want to happen. Does he take the hit at normal or counterhit damage/properties? Does he crouch and counter attack? Dash back? Jump over it. Repeat that 'record and playback' process over and over then play it back at full speed, add music then upload to youtube. Popular mode I imagine.

So...if I use Scorpion's spear, I in fact DO NOT want them to "GET OVER HERE", but I just want to see the spear fly across the screen?

He trolls more than Itagaki.

Can't say I disagree with Ono, MK is pretty much a guilty pleasure for me, not a real competitive fighting game. Fighting games don't need depth to be fun

I kind of agree. I don't view it as a guilty pleasure, per se, but I enjoy more for its mythos on top of the fun moves than for the fighting mechanics.
