Most overrated movie?

Citizen Kane is the correct answer. It is praised for cinematography, music, narrative structure, and innovation - which was great at the time. But the movue is only good if viewed in a bubble, not taking into consideration 80 years of advancement.

I think its more fun to talk about underrated movies, personally. Is easy to just say "this thing people like sucked". It's harder and more interesting to say "here's why I really like this thing most people don't like."

For instance, I really like Gravity. Sure, it doesn't have a ton of plot, but it's one of the few movies that felt truly experiential when I say it in imax. The sweeping scope combined with the sheer craft of filmmaking really captured me. Some of the shots in the film are just breathtaking, and it's a wonderful reminder that films are a visual medium and that sometimes they can be wonderful enough from a visual perspective to make them worthwhile as art even without much of a story.

Casablanca. My wife and I thought it would be cool to watch some of the classic old movies (having grown up in the 80s / 90s there were many from the black and white Era that we hadnt seen).

But...nothing...happens. Like nothing really happens. The acting was hammy, and the plot was meandering. What makes this movie a classic???

The Dark Knight is the most over rated in recent memory. Not saying it's bad at all, but watching it without the prior love of Batman and judging it on its own, it's just an average movie.

Watching The Dark Knight before going to work on TBS I found some of the scenes to be very laughable at times. One scene is when Rachel is thrown off the penthouse and Batman saves her then they crash onto the car, but how the hell did they survive?

Oh wait, a movie hate thread and I haven't mentioned Boyhood yet?

Well Boyhood. It is pure trash. I know that redlettermedia has pounded the whole shooting for 12 years thing to death, but it is the only thing worth talking about.

By what standard, I wonder, is Gravity "absolute garbage"? I didn't care much for it myself though I enjoyed it, and it would certainly seem overrated, but garbage? Come on.

I don't understand the need for such hyperbolic language to communicate your dislike for any particular thing - especially if that particular thing is met with widespread acclaim and success.
Don't you know, saying something is overrated is another way of saying the thing you like is shit because reasons.

I would argue it's appeal to non-Batman fans or lovers is exactly why it was so successful.

You're saying none of that is because of the massive amount of media attention the film had at the time because of the tragic circumstances involving one of the main stars? I'm sure a lot of people that wouldn't normally go and watch a superhero film went to see it because of this, and then realised it's not actually the terrible superhero film they expected. It's just not as good as everyone I spoke to said it was... In my opinion.

The only one I can think of is Titanic. I normally think it's pretty tough for movies to be overrated, but there's not a whole lot about Titanic that I enjoyed considering I couldn't give two shits about the Jack/Rose relationship.

Gravity, Inception, Godfather, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar

lmao

I'm A-okay with "overrated." It's just an opinion. "This thing that a lot people like, I don't agree, I don't feel it's deserved." Fair enough. Outright calling that thing "absolute trash" though, it just makes me roll my eyes. I suppose it's as valid of an opinion as any... but not really?

for the amount of money it has made and the amount of global popularity it has amassed...

frozen.

movies like ratatouille and nemo are way better.

I'm not saying that Ledger's death wasn't a factor. Not sure how you came to that silly conclusion.

You said it works for "Batman lovers" and not on its own, which is exactly the opposite. It's less a Batman film than any of the others and had mass appeal as a crime drama to many non-Batman fans. This is a known thing.

I have a passing at best interest in Batman, and thought it was a great film. In anything it's the Batman fans who tend to think it's over rated compared to say Batman Begins (which I think is average).

Overrated for me? I'd say most of Tarantino's films, and most super hero films. I don't dislike these films, but Tarantino's dialogue is pretty forced and all of the Marvel films these days feel like they're rolled off a production line... so safe and predictable.

2001: Space Odyssey. I don't care how great the technical aspects are, it's boring and half the movie is meaningless slow as hell movements and visual descriptions. It's the movie equivalent of the pages long paragraphs from the novel Heart of Darkness.

Huh? I'm so sorry but I'm going to call bullshit on this. If the greatest sequel of all time wasn't needed, is any movie truly needed?

The greatest sequel of all time is probably The Godfather Part 2. Also, Terminator > Terminator 2.

All that story build up, great cinematography, solid acting, lovely scoring combined with editing and the interplay of saving humanity vs. getting back to your family then the third act takes a gigantic turd on the whole thing and becomes the usual piss poor weak ass ending for a sci-fi film.

What a complete waste of brilliant ground work.
The movie should have gone the route of the final act being them saving humanity by starting over as they planned and him having to deal with never seeing his daughter again. All that crap about discovering dimensional space and ending up back at his daughters bookshelf, oh fuck me...way to ruin the entire movie.
The feeling of the trailers and the meat of the movie is completely undone by the end of this POS.

Star Wars.

I just don't get the appeal. I grew up on horror and Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and all that I guess you could say were my Star Wars. But I always thought Star Wars was lame. I mean, come on, it's a laser sword. Am I supposed to be impressed by that? A guy with a laser sword running around "OOOOOHHHHH!" There's a sasquatch dude running around "OOOOOHHHHHHH!" Color me not impressed.

Star Trek sucks too. I like Leonard Nimoy in general but Shatner's overrated and it's just so, so "geeky" for lack of a better term.

And I fucking hate Disney too. I hate anything cutesie and emotionally manipulative. Fantasia and what Pixar does (for the most part) is the exception to the rule.

The Godfather 1/2, they're good but people talk about them being the best films ever made and I can't get on that hype train.

Just to clarify, people actually rate Avatar? Who? I don't think that is true, it gets mentions because of the technology.
