Most rewarding gaming experience?

In this day and age of "rewards", you get points on your permanent record for fully completing games. That's great, as a signifier of your status as a thorough game player. But tell us about that time in your life as a gamer where you felt personally rewarded, that amazing feeling of achievement, that came with beating a boss, overcoming an opponent in a vs. battle, or even coming to posess a particularly awesome game.

I would say the last time I felt that sense of achievement was when I recieved Shadow of the Colossus for my birthday. I am saving it, savoring the ownership of it, and relishing in the torment of finishing all the other games on my list first before I settle into it.

One of my proudest moments in my gaming life was in college. I had all my friends and dorm neighbors around to watch me destroy the emerald weapon in FF7. Just having all those people there to witness it heightened the feeling that I had actually accomplished something worthwile in the game.

How about you?

Finally finding Dragonball GT: Final Bout after years of hunting for it in used bins.

buyer's remorse total

The day of achievement for me will come when I finally get a Merlan to drop the Spread Needle on Ultimate Ruins 3 with my character on PSOX. It's like a 1/900 drop rate.

To name a few.

Beating each MGS on Extreme/E. Extreme.
DMC1/3 on DMD, no item.

Those are the big, recent ones.

The rest are small ones, yet still memorable. A certain plan vs. a friend in AW:DS working perfectly comes to mind.

Edit: Dunno how this fits in, but I remember scrounging money for weeks. Finally the day came. My friend called me at 7:15 to say they got a special night shipment. I ran a usually 30 minute walk in less than 20. I was breathless, but it was in my hands.

Another run home. Can't wait. I'd dreampt of this moment.

I sit down, I tear apart the plastic. I open the case. The game disc? No, that's not what I'm after.

*tosses the ZoE box aside, putting the MGS2 demo in his PS2*

Bliss.

I had some others but the only semi-recent one would be beating MGS3. I know its not the most difficult game out there but the ending and story for my first play through got me all wrapped up. After I beat it I felt pretty damn good.

Crushing fools in online gaming, nothing else comes close, especially if its organized teamplay

Though I must say, tearing up NG at higher difficulty levels is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable single player video game rewards one can experience

Finishing DMC3. I've never beaten a game that difficult before, and still can't believe I didn't quit half way through or someting.

When I was thirteen (pre-internet, too poor for Nintendo Power) I beat Mega Man II and that was the coolest damn thing ever.

I'd say it was beating the Luca Goers 4-2 in that first Blitzball match. After trying so many times and failing (and having to watch the cutscenes over and over again), finally beating those sons of bitches was fantastic. Too bad the game's reward wasn't that great.
It's just a Strength Sphere :(

Probably http://speeddemosarchive.com/SuperMetroid.html#100

As for getting a game, probably buying my first game from money saved up (Dragon Warrior 3 on the NES), or maybe getting the LE FF1 Wonderswan Color; I really, really wanted it and had a ton of fun with it. That was the most recent omgomgomg neeeeed gaaaaaaame moment that I can think of that got me real excited to have in my hands.

:lol the required Blitzball match. I'm 1-12 for that. :/ The WIN was really cool though.
Tied the game up at 4-4, then won in overtime.

Another good moment was getting S rank in Code Veronica on the DC about 10 days after I got the game. Too bad the rocket launcher kinda sucks (they zoom over dogs and they have to leap at you for it to hit them). Only RE game I've gotten an S in.

Every time you manage to survive one of the hellish ganado blitzes in Resident Evil 4. There were so many parts friggin awesome parts, such a rush. Not to mention unlocking the secrets in Mercenaries mode...

Ninja Gaiden.

I actually got better as i kept on playing. It wasnt some lame stats boost either. It was learning new moves and getting faster with the reflexes.

Beating every staff ghost, beating all of story mode on very hard, getting every racers ending, and getting first in every cup in F-Zero GX. Took me 2 years.

Completing Little Nemo the Dream Master after struggling with it for the better part of a day, on one of my very last lives. Intense!

Also, some of the things you had to do in Goldeneye 007 to get cheat-codes. And, of course, nailing Aztec on 007-difficulty.

Smb2j1.png

Finishing Ruby Weapon off with an Omnislash after the whole party had been removed bar Cloud and he was down to his last ounce of HP.

Completing Metal Gear Solid 3 (good choice!). The most emotional (serious? dramatic?) game I've ever played. Videogame + perfect storytelling = Metal Gear Solid 3

Finishing Shadow Of The Colossus and just being completely and utterly stunned for at least the last three hours of gameplay (boss 12 onwards)

Amped 3 - maybe a controversial choice but it was very rewarding, IMO. The story was so bonkers and mad, but the game was good. Short, but a really fun game to play

King Kong - decent game but had a very rewarding finale (although the last level sucked)

Devil May Cry 3 - just because it owns. For rewarding the player for the effort they put in, no game has even come close to DMC3

Virtua Fighter 4: Evo -as above. This is the very definition of a game that rewards the player for taking the time and effort to learn the game

HAHA i clicked on this thread all ready to post this EXACT same thing. i'm glad i wasn't the only one who felt that way!

Recently... 9 days challenge on Pikmin.

And I feel that every hour I throw in Advance wars make me play better... Very very long to complete, but still awesome.

beating sf2: the world warriors in the arcade with one quarter.... when i heard people cheering after i beat bison, i couldnt contain my excitement.

Recently, it would have to be beating Call of Duty 2 on Veteran on Xbox 360 without Keyboard and Mouse AND without LEANING!! Jesus christ, who the hell decided to take out leaning?!

While not particularly rewarding, I felt I completed somthing other than a video game after finishing Metal Gear Solid 3. Kind of hard to put my finger on how I felt after that.

Parrying Chun Li's SA.....I? I forget, but it's not SAII. It was cool because it was really out of the blue haha. It's the anti-air super, not the fireball. Basically I jumped in, half-expected it, parried it and got the whole thing, and it was the first time I ever tried to parry it at that.

The next fight I played as Ryu and walked under it (NO FEAR!), parried the last hit -> Shinsho :D

And another time as Ryu, I dashed into Shinsho, which was great because my friend started an EX hurricane with Ken at the same time. When I pulled the super Ken was stuck about one frame before hitting me and I got him, beautiful!

SF is always great if there's a crowd :D

- Finishing Ninja Gaiden (xbox)

- Finishing Final Fantasy 2 (first rpg I ever beat and I remember the last boss being like an hour long fight)

- Finally buying an arcade cabinet and booting up Metal Slug 2

- Doing a midair 360 in Ridge Racer for the first time

- My first Hole-in-One in Mario Golf: TT

Becoming good at Ninja Gaiden is very rewarding... going from nearly returning the game because the 2nd boss was "soo impossible" to beating it on Very Hard feels great.

My rewarding experinced is that i get to complete that lonnnnnnggggggg arse game evar!!!! Baten Kaitos

After i heard about Baten Kaitos 2 hit the wave on the internet, so i restarted playing the game again eariler this month (FEB 'o6). I wanted to finish it before i started on the sequel. Now, I just completed Baten Kaitos 1 just last week on Tues. after nearly 2 yrs break. <---Thanks to Geldoblame for that horrific beating on my characters!!!

(If it weren't for "GELDOBLAME" I would've finished this two years ago.) :D :D :D

PLUS: Another rewarding experince

Recently, I found the rarest gem "Star Wars: Rogue Leader Rogue Squadron II" 20 days ago.

After i saw it on the shef with the other oldies games i snatched that sucker and got it for $14.99 (originally priced at $19.99).

I'm still playing it and it's raping me HARD!!!!

Yeah, thanks for reminding me of that.

Beating the last boss of FFIV (Chronicles version) sure was hard as hell. I'm not even sure I should spoilertag this, but whatever.

My major problem with it was the fact that you had to steal the Dark Matter as to not be obliterated by his Big Bang attack. For some reason, Zeromus hated me and never felt like coughing it up. So I'm playing the game, and my (now ex) girlfriend sees me about to toss the controller into the wall, and she says "Let me try." Needless to say, she got the damn thing in her first try. That was a couple of years ago, and to this day, I don't have the guts to fight the son of a bitch again because of this.
:(

I'd say that my main one was passing Colors in beatmania IIDX. When I first saw this, I never would have imagined that I'd be able to do it. It isn't the hardest song in the game or anything (not by a long, long, long shot), but it was more satisfying than anything I can remember off-hand. Plus, it was the first song I passed of the hardest difficulty rating. I just didn't really realize how hard the unrated songs can be.

There are a few others, too, but these are just recent things that stand out.

Ninja Gaiden Black. Yes, only on Normal. I figured I'd never be able to finish off some of the bosses in here.

Trackmania Sunrise's Orbital beaten with a Silver. This courses are the most frustrating things on the planet. The first of which requires you to hit a ramp at the most sickeningly precise angle and speed so that you fly over a mountain, bounce on the water, and land on an elevated track.

Just reaching Border Down's third level. I suck at it.

100% on Frequency/Amplitude without using the shoulder buttons
Guitar Hero 100% on expert
Beating chapter 4 on Ikaruga without dying. It was more "holy fuck how did I just do that?!" then anything. One of my roommates was watching, from then on he thought I was some sort of cyborg or something. Dying 4 times on that level is GOOD for me normally. Fucking insanity.

:(

I don't even know if that works, the last time I
stole Dark Matter, Big Burn/Bang did *more* damage to me than before I stole it off Zeromus.

Really? That's weird. O_o Was that on the FF Chronicles version? Because I barely survived
BB without stealing it.

That's sad, I can't think of any event off the top of my head where I felt accomplished.

I've been thinking about it a lot recently. One of the most rewarding things I have ever done gaming-wise was finish Alundra. It was like a rite of passage. I fully expected to be recieved by tribal elders as an adult after that.

Honestly, games come out so fast nowadays. I think some people have replaced the excitement and wonder of playing games with the need to anticipate the NEXT BIG THING. I think that has a lot to do with why people have long-ass backlogs of games their never going to get around to playing.

What happened to having a game a season? God, I remember playing Road Rash II like it was going out of style. Not that I didn't have other games, not that there weren't new games coming out, but because it was a great game to play. I wanted to beat the hell out of that game.

What happened to the sheer exhilaration of seeing Super Mario Bros. 3 on the big screen in The Wizard and knowing, knowing that was going to be the game of games for the next year?

It was either on Chronicles or the SFAM cart, which Chronicles is a port of.

QFT. Except it only applies to me on Dante Must Die mode. Having played DMC1 (a hard game as well) so much and other action titles, I didn't have any trouble with DMC3 until DMD mode.

Defeating Emerald/Ruby Weapon in FFVII & Defeating Omega Weapon in FFVIII. MY cousin couldnt believe it that I defeated them bosses....
being the first to show off them fatalities and combos in Mortal Kombat..People at the arcades where like WHOA!!! :lol :lol
Also showing some street fighter showoff that there was a touch of death move with guile..That invisible throw from far distance...Those were classics...

Finally beating Shinobi for PS2 after nearly 2 years of owning it and getting stuck in the last boss.

Also back in 7th grade, during the last few days of school, they brought a Snes with SFII and hooked it up on a classroom that had a TV. Bunch of people were there playing and watching, including 11th and 12th graders, and me & a friend were taking turns kicking ass all over the fucking place and acting all cocky, especially with the girls watching. Stupid, but at that time it was great.

I beat Super Mario Kart 150cc using a shrunken character for the entire Special course. I was told it would unlock 200cc but it did absolutely nothing.

So far its been beating every new game I've bought this year. For me thats some good peace of mind while giving the finger to backlogging new software.

a one credit clear of a difficult shooter. soukyugurentai was my first and most memorable. ultimately it's as meaningless as any other game "accomplishment," but your adrenaline level during the last fight and your relief when you win are so intense that it physically feels as if you've done something big. i can't think of anything else in gaming that compares.

Beating F-Zero GX on Master mode.
Halo co-op on Legendary

For a good story...

I come back to my dorm from class one day after lunch and there's 3 stoned kids in my room along with my roommate. The friend I had ate lunch with is a big Super Smash Bros. Melee player like myself. We always have close matches, but I pretty much win all of the time. This was at the beginning of our addiction at the beginning of the term though. Four of us start a 5-man stock match and it comes down to my friend and I with both 2 lives left and him with about a 40% damage lead. What followed was the most intense SSBM match I've ever played ending up with me being so close to death a bunch of times, but mananging to come back at the end to win. The crowd went wild, I got high-fives from all the stoned kids, I was the champion. It was wonderful.
