Race to Witch Mountain - 5/10 Not impressive as a movie for kids, nor as a family movie since there are a lot better movies out there in both categories. Not unwatchable either; just mediocre. Prince of Darkness - 6.5/10 The last from John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy that i saw. Definitely the worst out of the trilogy movies, but even so it was somewhat enjoyable. Still, nothing can beat In the Mouth of Madness. Franklyn - 7/10 I liked the way the story was presented (what with the split narrative and
the two realities (one of them being inside a delusional man's mind) that intertwine until the end
, but not the story itself; could've been better (but it's definitely not bad). Chugyeogja (aka The Chaser) - 8/10 It was good; one of the better recent Korean movies. But i felt it could've been so much more. It did a good job of painting police failure in an overall amusing painting and also show the more serious and sad reality, but a few plot holes, the fact that it's pretty predictable and an ending built on a coincidental string of events (a la Crash for example) made me rate it with only an 8. Krabat - 8.5/10 I absolutely loved this movie; it's not a masterpiece by any means, nor an extraordinary movie, but i loved it. Maybe i was in the right mood for fantasy when i saw it, maybe it reminded me of the childhood Grimm stories i used to read, but i enjoyed it immensely (despite some not-so-good opinions that i read about it). Inglourious Basterds - 9/10 This is a great movie. One of the best released this year. I recommend it to everyone. Observe and Report - 9/10 One of the best (black) comedies i've seen this year. Masterfully made satire addressed to certain aspects of our current society. After The Hangover (which i've seen due to GAF-hype) i thought O&R would be another not-bad-but-just-mediocre movie. I was wrong and i'm glad i saw it. Sword of the Stranger - 10/10 I don't watch many anime movies (or series) and this is the only anime movie i've seen this year. It was great; the pacing is amazing, there is enough story to justify the action scenes (which are great), animation is great, everything is great Oh and i loved the uncertain ending. Scenes of a Sexual Nature - 10/10 This is the only movie (i'm not counting the anime) i've seen this year that i thought was a 10/10. Yes, it's a 2006 movie, yes it takes place in a park, no it doesn't have a complex story full of twists and turns, nor amazing special effects. But it is, in my opinion of course, a small masterpiece. Charming, humourous and even sad, for me it is the best movie i've seen in 2009 (so far).
Greetings from my little companion.
Finally watched Scarface last night. I'll admit, it wasn't as amazing as i'd hyped it up to be or i'd heard it was but i still really enjoyed it. I love these rise and fall gangster movies.
These spoilers will ruin the movie if you haven't seen it.
one thing I don't understand
They found the girl dead and badly beaten but it turns out those 2 kids did it. When Kevin Bacon is describing the crime he mentions that it was an accident and the gun went off. They then chased the girl so she wouldn't talk. We are the supposed to believe these 2 kids who accidental shot a women then beat here to death with a hockey stick? doesn't make sense.
Also, everything up until the end would have you believe the kid did it because he didn't want his brother to leave but Bacon explains it to Penn as an accident. Which is it?
Only theatrical this time about since my computer is forever only working on Safe Mode until I fix it (out of five stars): whip it - *** thirst - *** beeswax - *** 1/2

Miller's Crossing - how the fuck did I go so long without watching this film? Such a brilliant story, amazing acting from Byrne & co. and a wonderful score are what make this film, for me, nothing short of a masterpiece.
My September wrap-up: Coraline
Million Dollar Baby
Gattaca
Kill Bill Vol. 1
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
Coraline was a big "meh" for me. It never achieved that special magical feeling that I expect from good animated films, like Pixar's stuff. Just a real dull atmosphere throughout the entire movie, and not nearly as imaginative as I'd hoped. Too bad because I wanted to like it. 4/10.
Million Dollar Baby was a letdown too. To put it succinctly, I thought it was boring. Couldn't connect with the characters. 5/10.
Now Gattaca I did enjoy. It had some slow parts but I thought they did an adequate job of exploring the premise. 7/10.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 was decent. Real stylish, good action scenes, but I wasn't crazy about it. I'm debating whether or not to proceed with Vol. 2. 6/10.
King of Kong. The stand out of the list, King of Kong was one of my favorite movies of the entire year and easily one of my favorite documentaries ever. Even despite my interest in video games I had reservations about this one before seeing it, but I'm so glad I did. A really fascinating look into a silly subculture of man-nerds whose lives essentially revolve around old arcade games. I couldn't believe how farcical it all was. Here's Billy Mitchell, the most archetypical example of a "bad guy" you could imagine, versus Steve Wiebe, the extremely likeable "good guy" who embodies all the qualities you'd expect from a hero. Wiebe is friendly, honest, and down-to-earth. Mitchell is conniving, petty, and mean. I was mesmerized by Mitchell's incredible ego and the little minions he surrounded himself with to fawn over him and do his bidding. You have to pause at some point and think, "Wow... these are actually REAL people." Loved it all the way through. 9/10.
I went to see moon with sam rockwell yesterday night and damn that is a good and entertaining movie! Take that space odyssey!
Kevin spacy as the computer gerty rocks
a real pitty it has been released in just 5 cinemas throughout holland
Consider yourself lucky.. it wasn't released at all in my country and as a SF fan i can't wait to see it (since everyone is praising it). Unfortunately, my best bet is to probably order the DVD online as i have no hopes of ever seeing it in cinema
That sucks man low budget movies get screwed over by blockbusters without a decent story. I hope you get to see this movie soon because its really nice!
I saw it in some obscure little student artsy fartsy cinema where the sound of the projector could be heard
Just watched Mao's Last Dancer. I thought it was pretty good. Happy and sad at the same time. Few funny moments, and a few that made you feel horrible.
Lost in Space (Sci-Fi;1998) 6/10 good mindless fun for the whole family; undeniable a HUGE inspiration for the game "Dead Space"
007 Goldeneye 10/10 for me the best Bond ever. a masterpiece in every aspect. no CGI bullshitting action scenes, no ridiculous sci-fi-like things, most brutal Bond movie(yea fuck craig)..this is the only bond where victims of shootings actualy bleed, an actor who represents James Bond perfectly(again: fuck you Craig)

I caught this on tv the other day, first time I've seen it in a while. Much as I love the movie, watching it again, I never realized just how bad the ending is--specifically the psychologist's whole monologue. It's still a fantastic film, but I can't help but think it would be better if Hitchcock had excised that whole scene.

Hitchcock's endings always came off as abrupt and poorly executed. North by Northwest in particular, I remember thinking my DVR didn't record the whole film :lol Vertigo had his best ending IMO, the film is pretty much flawless.
I ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would. It was a bit on the predictable side, and toward the end it started getting a little silly, but I still think it was worth a watch.

Still a great mafia flick. I never noticed the 'cop and crook commentary' before. :lol
It's pretty wild having Henry Hill the guy the movie's about comment on it.
Also interesting to know that the guy who plays the FBI guy at the end was actually involved in the Henry Hill case and is an FBI agent. (I can't remember what his capacity was)
For truth. So very underrrated for how stunning it is. The coldness and detachment of Damon matches the smart script and awesome visuals. Haunting little movie that gets no love.
Watched Where the Wild Things Are twice over the weekend as Carol (horned monster) and eviscerated zombie Max. Made the experience more kickass. Rented Finding Neverland, Life Aquatic, and Le Tripletts De Beleville...made me wonder where the magic of films went.
