As a man who has seen like... 3 korean movies (Oldboy, Taegukgi (garbage) and The Host) made in '00, I'd like a list of Korean movies that are worth watching, from you. Any genre is A-OK.

*Oh yeah, I've seen Infernal Affairs as well.

I too would like this list. Also, didn't Bong Joon-ho do The Host. I think he also did Memories of Murder...I wanna see that.

Just watched Paths of Glory yesterday. I've seen all his major work sans Barry Lyndon, Lolita, and The Killing. This would be my ranking of Kubrick's films based on what I've seen thus far:

2001: A Space Odyssey > A Clockwork Orange > Paths of Glory > Full Metal Jacket > Dr. Strangelove > Eyes Wide Shut > The Shining

I didn't really care for The Shining at all. Shelley Duvall's acting was borderline atrocious and aside from a few nice shots (blood in elevator, top-down view of the maze, opening helicopter shot, a couple others) I didn't feel like the film really had any redeeming qualities. Even Jack Nicholson's performance, the one for which he is probably most famous, didn't really astound me. Could someone explain to me what I'm missing? At times I thought I could see what it is about the film that people love even though I didn't really experience it myself, but these moments were too few and far between to really get a sense of why others like it; let alone why I, myself, didn't enjoy it.

Jaws: The Revenge.
Concluding the Jaws-marathon. I heard that this should be the worst one by a large margin, but I found it sucked around as much as 3 did, maybe slightly more.
On the plus-side it has Michael Caine and Mario Van Peebles. I always find Mario funny, and this is no exception, especially when he forgets the jamaican accent.
The big flaws however are the dissapointiongly low kill count and the thing with Van Peebles and the shark in the end. You know what I mean. It's so god damned stupid. I shouted at my television.

This is a good Korean thriller, kind of in the same vein of Memories of Murder but darker and more action-packed.

The less you know about the film before watching it the better. Leonardo DiCaprio has signed up for the watered down US remake.

That's too bad! I had a feeling I'd looked it up on wiki or something (been a long time since I saw it), guess I didn't, my bad.

Right, I'll add it to my queue, thanks!

Amelie - 10 out of 10
Why have I never seen this before? I was reluctant considering I'm not a fan of romantic comedies but Jesus Christ was this film masterfully done. The look of the film is just jaw droppingly beautiful and Audrey Tautou was simply gorgeous. Simply amazing film, I'll have to sit on it a while but I'm confident that this is going to crack my top 10.

Accident/Yi ngoi - 6.5 out of 10
Interesting premise and nice set up, but the film tapers off a bit after the first 30 minutes or so. To me, this was another case of the premise overshadowing the execution.

A Little Princess - 9 out of 10
The only Cuaron film I had yet to watch. The look of the film was excellent, which isn't surprising considering cinematography was headed by Emmanuel Lubezki. I actually really enjoyed the film, despite the childish subject matter. I'm not a fan of significantly altering the source material but the changes they made were great. My only problem was the ridiculously dreadful usage of CGI in the "story within the story" tidbits of the film.

Edit:

Dude above me, make sure to watch:

1. Mother/Madeo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216496)
2. Once Upon a Time in School (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390205)
3. A Bittersweet Life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456912)
4. Save the Green Planet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354668)
5. The Good the Bad and the Weird (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0901487)
6. A Tale of Two Sisters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376)
7. Memories of Murder (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0353969)
8. Friend/Chingoo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281718)
9. Joint Security Area/JSA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260991)
10. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374546)
11.The President's Last Bang (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445396)
12. The Way Home (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312841)
13. Silmido (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387596)
14. 3-Iron (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0423866)
15. Breathless/Ddongpari (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1373120)

I'm not really a fan of outright romantic films, which seems to be South Korea's bread and butter, so I can't really recommend you anything from that genre :P

Saw - Alice in Wonderland (6/10)

I don't know I'm usually a big fan of Mr. Burton's style and I knew the movie would be all about style with little substance, but there was simply something missing...It wasn't colorful enough, there weren't enough quirks or kinky humor, and overall it just seemed to lack character.

Yea this is near the top spot of my favourite movies and im not necessarily a fan of romantic comedy either. There is just something about this one that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Watch this one too: Un long dimanche de fiançailles

Same director, same lead actress, similar theme and tone.

I hate romantic comedies as well, but this film is so beautifully shot that it's difficult not to appreciate it. I can recommend pretty much all of Jeunet's other films, with the exception of Alien Resurrection.

It seems to change frequently:

1. Vertigo
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Lawrence of Arabia
4. Once Upon a Time in the West
5. Ikiru
6. Goodfellas
7. El Angel Exterminador
8. In the Heat of the Night
9. Stalker
10. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Something like that? It's pretty hard to come up with a Top 10, the list will probably change each time you ask me every few months depending on my mood :P

I've been meaning to watch Ikiru. I need to get around to watching Vertigo at some point too. I watched Rear Window a while back and it didn't blow me away. I admire the directorial choices but the film never really gripped me like I hoped it would. Since then I've kind of slacked on watching more Hitchcock.

I looked for a dumb comedy to watch but i found and watched:

Not as dumb as expected. Quite lovely charakters and a nice little story. I am not the expected audience for this movie i guess...

Nevertheless i liked it.

Great list. We share #1's.

I watched The Yakuza last night via Netflix streaming. I've been trying to beef up on movies before my time and Netflix streaming is pretty great for that.

I never even heard of this movie, but it was recommended by Netflix so I thought wtf... Anyways they came through, great movie! I love catching films like this and not knowing what I am in for.

The whole time I kept thinking... is that the guy from Black Rain? :D

I had to sit through that with my gf (She loved the book). I thought it was awful. I guess teen british "comedy" is not my style.

Yup, believe I commented on the film within this very thread. Sydney Pollack was a great director, especially early in his career, you should check out some his other stuff if you get the chance.

Robin Hood - Fantastic! I don't get the haters AT ALL. It was highly entertaining on all levels and had perfect pacing and great balance. Watch it.

I'm going to be honest, I don't know what to think of this film.

On one hand you have a film that raises the presentation and immersion bar to the next level (something not done since "The Lord of the Rings"). But on the other you have a mediocre plot with horrendous writing.

I'm going to go into far more detail, but there's going to be huge spoilers. So for those who've seen the movie highlight the black spaces or press ctrl + A (for Windows) or command + A (for Mac) (I'm also posting this on Facebook and my friends don't post on Gaf so yeah).

First off I'd like to start out by saying that the film was good, not great, not spectacular, but just merely good. However as I've said before I feel very mixed about this film. I'm not sure how to go about this so I'll just recap my watching experience. The film starts off in a very typical American movie fashion. A bald ex-marine who is in his early 30's goes to a military base on another planet to work on some top secret mission (highly original). I remember cringing at the opening scene because it was edited so poorly. But what really drove me nuts is how unrealistic they portrayed the military. I loved how calm the marine instructor talked to the marines. :lol Anyway when he rolls out of his wheelchair onto the base I was stunned to see the fantastic CG work by James Cameron. He once again solidifies himself as the master of CG. It was done just so right.

He procedes to enter the military base with some of the most cliché writing I've ever seen for such a big budget film. The worst was when Dr. Grace (the head scientist in the experiment) kept commenting on how much of a loose cannon Jake (the main character who is an ex-marine) was. It was just painful to listen to. But the absolute worst part was when Jake's soul was transferred into his Avatar. He immediately gets extremely excited and tries to walk around the area, stumbling as he does it. The scientists tell him to immediately stop what he's doing and lay back down. But he doesn't listen. Instead he continues to walk out the door and start sprinting on an obstacle course. How in the fuck does he go from stumbling around to sprinting on an obstacle course (flawlessly) in ten seconds? And why wouldn't they just unplug him when he was running loose?

Anyway if memory serves correct around that time Dr. Grace comes to visit Parker Selfridge ("self-fridge"?) and in the conversation he explains the reason for them being on the planet. Apparently where the Na'vi, the blue creatures, live there's a tree with plenty of Unobtainium which is worth a shit ton of money (for some reason) that they want to harvest. And-I'm sorry to interrupt but seriously? Unobtainium? What kind of fucking name is THAT? I could imagine the thought process that went on with that:

James Cameron: "I can't think of the name for the material that the humans are suppose to mine for."

Hmm...let me think.

They need to obtain it but it's hard for them to since it's blocked by these blue tribal people, so they can't obtain it...

so they don't obtain it but they un...obtain......UNOBTAINIUM!"

Stupid, just fucking stupid, they might as well have called it "thismaterialisprotectedbybluelifeformssoitsgoingtobeabitchtryingtogetitium".

So anyway he goes to the forest to learn more about the Na'vi. And holy shit does this look amazing. I've never been so impressed by such atmosphere and presentation since "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The environments looked real enough to be believable but stylized and fake enough to appreciate the scenery and not take it too seriously. Once again Cameron NAILS CG. Eventually Jake gets cased by a pather creature thing and does the classic 400ft jump into the water that would shatter bones yet the person remains unharmed cliché. He proceeds to explore the forest in which he gets saved by one of the Na'vi.

Now this is where the film actually starts to become good. It is at this point where the film tries to ditch the horrible writing and classic action movie cliches to a more fantasy adventure "welcome to our world" setting. It isn't anything extravagant content wise, but it really nails the atmosphere and immersion of the world. I was completely blown away by it, never have I been blown away by an environment like this since "The Lord of the Rings". It literally steals the film. Seriously it's an experience that any film lover has to see to believe. I could only imagine if I saw it 3D as it was originally intended. What's more interesting is that philosophy and neuroscience comes into play. It appears that the Na'vi have the abliitu

The film continues as Jake lives a double life as he learns the ways of the Na'vi while also being a military informant in the experiment. I mean seriously isn't this kind of a plot hole? I mean before they couldn't find him and were panicing because they were worried that he could have gotten hurt or some shit, and they tried looking for him for hours, but why would they do that if they could just unplug him and ask him where he was and if he was alright back at the base?

Anyway Jake becomes more and more attached to the Na'vi and there ways. Eventually Dr. Grace comes to the Na'vi tribe. She learns about them as well and becomes attached just like Jake. She eventually tries to convince Selfridge that destroying the Giving Tree (who thinks up of these names?) would be a mistake. What follows is a painful scene to watch. Selfridge proclaims that the natives are just stupid "savages". Dr. Grace, a neuroscientist, explains how the tree actually is some biological server for human data (or in common words souls). Selfridge responds by saying the neuroscientist is crazy and doesn't know what she's talking about (makes sense). Seriously what comes out of his mouth is just painful and his horrific acting doesn't help either.

The film continues with addressing a previous plot hole. The humans start destroying the wildlife in order to start mining for the unobtainium. Neytiri, the princess Na'vi, awakens from this and tries to wake Jake up. Unfortunately he isn't plugged in yet so he doesn't wake up. Nevtiri desperately tries to wake Jake up but with no success, finally he wakes up and attacks the giant bulldozer. The humans back at the base see this and are shocked to see Jake take the Na'vi's side. They unplug both Jake and Grace and tell them that the experiment is off. They both try to explain that they can convince the Na'vi to move from their homeland but the Colonel showed a video log of him stating otherwise.

The movie follows with a typical battle of nativists vs technology. It's very impressive and again visually stunning.

All in all the movie is definitely something to experience, the environment immersion makes the film worth watching alone. Unfortunately the plot and especially script is very weak. I still can't believe this film was nominated for so many Oscars "Best Picture"? REALLY?

Overall good film with amazing environments but otherwise not much else.

So I just watched Seven for the first time; it's one of those mainstream movies that I'm aware is critically well-regarded but which I have always had little interest in watching. After watching it, I feel quite similarly; the script was very 'meh,' and I think that Brad Pitt phoned in his performance. It's well-made in terms of lighting and cinematography, but Fincher has matured into a much better filmmaker/artist (the strange detour that was Benjamin Button notwithstanding).

What dude, I just watched Seven again recently and that movie is a fucking masterpiece xD

So I just got done watching this like a half hour ago. Ummmm yeah, this is probably one of the greatest films ever made.

The Prestige
Great movie, although the characters weren't very deep. Still, excellent color and cinematography, the music is good, and the acting performances are very good. I love how the film itself shares the characteristics of a great magic trick. Very cool.

Minority Report
Decent action film. Feels slow a lot of the time. If it was edited down to maybe 2 hours instead of 2 and a half, the pacing might be better, upping the adrenaline. But it was still enjoyable.

The American President
Really boring, Douglas isn't believable at all in the character.

La Misma Luna
Touching at parts. Again, it can be kinda slow, but it's still a satisfactory family movie.

Tonight:

Blue (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1993)

Man, Juliette Binoche acts the shit out of this movie. The Three Colors trilogy is something that I have been very excited to see, and this first movie did not disappoint. I honestly do not have that much to say about it, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think that I will be able to judge it better in the context of the other two movies, so I am not going to write too much about it at this time.

In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000)

HOLY SHIT. Between this and Chungking Express, Wong Kar-Wai is now somebody that is defiantly on my radar. I loved everything about this movie, I think. First of all, the acting is absolutely wonderful; it is subtle and understated in the best possible way, and Cheung and Leung manage to capture the complex nature of their relationship without doing very much at all. A lot of that, I must admit, is due to the wonderful photography, which manages to capture so many little motions (hand-grabs, looks, fidgets) that convey so much. The production design is also quite breathtaking; this feels like a living, breathing world, especially the world of the two neighboring apartments. I think that my favorite thing about this film, though, is the wonderful use of color in this movie; it is vibrant and varied, hearkening back to those early Hollywood movies where they made their use of color count. I was not at all surprised to learn that Wong Kar-Wai was influenced by Vertigo. Overall, I really loved this movie, and while it's not my FAVORITE 21st century movie (probably not even top 10 or 15), I understand it being #1 on the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They list for 21st century movies; it's awesome.

Blue is my favorite of the trilogy but all three are pretty great. You should watch the Double Life of Veronique. Blue and Double Life are both tied for my favorite films of Kieślowski and I would consider both of them to be perfect.

If you rented the Criterion of In the Mood For Love, don't watch the alternate ending. It would have really degraded the film if he had included it.

The Bank Job (2008) - I picked this up cheap a couple weeks ago, since Jason Statham usually makes for good entertainment, the price was right, it got decent reviews and I'm a sucker for heist films. Can't recommend this though, I find it funny that one of the quotes on the DVD box reads "Exhilarating!", I found this movie the complete opposite. The story dragged for awhile and then branched off from the heist into about a dozen other subplots that were all to come together at the end but none were really explored well enough and as a result the ending came off as rushed and was unsatisfying. The story was interesting but didn't really translate to an entertaining movie. 5/10

Southland Tales (2006) - Wasn't quite ready for this as I blind-bought it off some online recommendations without really reading too much into what it was about. One of the strangest movies I've ever sat all the way through. The ending saved it from being a total disaster. Seems like one of those movies you might need to watch more than once to really appreciate but I know I'll never sit through it again. Interesting topics covered and a likable cast of outcast actors. I should probably give this a way lower score as it's damn mess, but I'm kind of glad I saw it once. 4/10

The part where JT has his depressing, showtune moment makes this movie a 7 at least. Seriously my favorite part of the movie.

Watched Sunshine with the wife tonight.

Thought it was great tell near the end when the massive tonal shift happens. Still thought it was an alright movie, but I wish it had gone a different direction.

Repulsion - Polanski / 1965

Some really great moments and scenes and I thought it was pretty impressive for its time and budget, but the pacing for the first 45 minutes or so was just grueling for me.
Kind of an added creep factor too now, knowing Polanski's past

YES, this is the movie that introduced me to Wong Kar-Wai, and I've watched everything he's done since then, and more. Without this movie, I never would've been introduced to Tony Leung Chiu Wai or Maggie Cheung and the other stuff they've done. Absolutely beautiful movie in every way. I've watched it numerous times since then and I think it remains the best WKW movie, although I loved Happy Together, Chungking Express, and Days of Being Wild almost as much, it can't be topped.

Movies I've seen lately:

City of God - Great! Wow atmosphere, story, cinematography.
Broken Embraces - Penelope Cruz is so hot in this movie, and it's a great movie too.
The Blue Kite - Meh film about the cultural revolution in China.
Farewell My Concubine - A MUCH better film about the cultural revolution and the brotherhood of two Beijing Opera singers. Has Leslie Cheung in a fantastic role. Sad, but beautiful movie.
Yi Yi - Wonderful story of a family in Taiwan. Comes full circle - Birth at the beginning, death at the end.

Rewatched Serenity now that I've seen the series.
Enjoyed it more with the series as a background. Series was average, movie was great.

Watched I hope they serve beer in hell. Just finished the book and I loved it so I decided to watch the movie. Movie was amusing, a good rental, but nothing special, and couldn't capture the magic that was the book, which is one of the funniest things I have ever read.
