Lost in Translation
Brilliant movie. The two leads are incredible, the cinematography is beautiful and Scarlett Johannson looks stunning. Though I don't recommend watching this when you're feeling slightly gloomy already, this will not improve it at all. :( Still, I don't regret watching it.

The final goodbye scene is one of my favorite scenes in a movie.

The Double Life of Veronique - This was recommended in the Amelie thread so I said what the hell and imported the Blu-Ray version. Phenomenal film.

Just saw this for the first time. Beginning and middle dragged a little bit, ending was awesome. It's about as good as the Empire Strikes Back.

Jedi was always my favorite of the trilogy as a kid, if only for that final space battle and Luke/Vader duel.

Ewoks have not aged well for me :lol but I still love that movie.

The Restless (Joong-cheon)
After his beloved fiancée is killed by demons, Yi Gwak (Woo-sung Jung) joins the royal demon-hunting squad and distinguishes himself as a great hero. And though Yi eventually falls in battle, his adventures are just beginning. His spirit is whisked away to Joong-cheon, a place between heaven and earth where souls await reincarnation -- and where the final, epic clash between the forces of good and evil will be played out.

Looks cool, I'll have to check this out.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - been on a bit of a western kick ever since Red Dead Redemption came out, so I'm seeing a lot of the classics for the first time. This was great, Eastwood is such a fucking badass! The story was so much better than I was expecting, too.

Serenity 9/10
I really liked it, but it was nowhere near as good as the TV series, which I also just watched. Still, that's a high bar. The message was good and the universe of Firefly continued to enthrall.
The death of Wash sucked. :/ And now I see stuff on wikipedia that Tudyk claims a Serenity 2 will happen? He's dead :lol The death of Book was really good though. It was emotional and meant a lot to Mal.

Insomnia 8.5/10
Williams is amazing, the cinematography and setting are great, and the lighting and editing are clever.

Mystery Team 8/10
A funny movie with some of the most hilarious people coming up right now. Glover is perfect. I was expecting an amateur feel from the camera work and everything, but it was actually pretty nice.

Get Him to the Greek 8.5/10
I really enjoyed the three main characters and the view of the wacky music industry. I'd recommend seeing it.

The three best films I saw in Cannes:

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives by Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Poetry by Lee Chang-Dong

Le Quattro Volte by Michelangelo Frammartino

Yup, that was beautiful. Not sure if it qualifies as one of my favorite scenes ever, I don't really have a list of that ready in my head. I loved the Karaoke scene as well.
Is Mystery Team shown in Europe as well? I hope so, but I guess it's unlikely.

These are all available on Netflix Instant Watch for those interested

Che- I just have to ask what all involved were thinking. The first two and a half hours is decent enough if it were to be an HBO miniseries. The last half is a bunch of people running around in the jungle starving, puking, and bitching and not doing a whole lot of talking. At the end of this epic you know little more about the man and the events that surrounded him then you could have read off of a 100 word summary of a Wikipedia article that summarized two random sections of said Wikipedia article.

The Motorcycle Diaries is available on Instant Watch and believe its supposed to be a good movie so you might check it out. Haven't seen it myself so I cannot comment on it.

Netflix: The Motorcycle Diaries

Valhalla Rising (2009)
The first one or two chapters blew me away. Damn awesome beginning of the movie. Loved the mood, the landscapes, the gore. Then after a while it gets more and more surreal and esotheric while being extremely slow paced. This killed off the momentum imo. The film had potential to be something like a mature version of 300 but turned out to be an art film for (what i think) not the sake of art but to stay within a small budget. And that quite obvious.
Still not a bad film but i felt a bit unsatisfied afterwards.

Just saw Micheal Clayton on TV, my entire family were bored out their minds but i loved it, great characters and one of the best endings i've seen in ages.
You're so fucked.

Someone explain to me why, in Michael Clayton, he
got out of the car to look at the horses up close.

And DON'T tell me that
horses represent innocence, which Michael had lost.
I saw that load of shit in the rottenwatch thread however-many-years ago and almost lost it. :lol

They looked like one of the drawings in his son's book.

I haven't seen the film in a while, but I believe it has something to do with a discussion he had previously with his son.

Edit: Beaten

I watched The Insider a couple of nights ago. It flew completely under my radar when it was first released, but Netflix recommended it for me so I gave it a watch. Really great movie. Both Pacino and Russel Crowe gave excellent performances.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: Pretty funny movie, Jeff Bridges was great, the whole Jedi thing with Ewan McGregor was well played, and Clooney sold me on his warrior-monkishness. Overall enjoyed.

3-Iron: Wow, fucked up movie. Still don't really know what to make of it, although it was enjoyable on some level.

title chick looks a little like Lohan :lol

Except the actual title actress is a redhead, and far more attractive than Lohan is. And the movie is from the early 70 or so.

Michael Clayton
This movie is an absolute masterpiece in my mind. It's just so dynamic and fluid and interesting.

The Insider
Responsible for one of the most powerful/moving scenes of all time: when Russel Crowe
sits in his hotel room and imagines his children playing in the garden, as it all fades around/before him.

Rewatched the director's cuts of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly and Aliens this weekend. I love the invention of DVDs. :lol

HiResDes said:
You act as if I said I thought it was Lohan.

Sorry, didnt mean it like that. I meant that the movie poster does not represent what the actual actress looks like in the movie. Which is hilarious.

My mind is blown right now.

Guess what guys, UWE BOLL made a decent movie

!!

uwe-boll-rampage.jpg

^^ pretty fucked up and disturbing, and goes against convention. Basically a kid tries to rack up the highest kill count in a small town, and actually goes about it in a believable way. The actor that plays the kid did a fantastic job as well. Besides a few annoying editing choices early in the film, i have to say that it was overall well written.

Uwe Boll is claimed to have produced, written, and directed this movie.

I don't believe it.

and................ I liked it. really liked. watched with super low expectation and it was really unexpected how deep the story was. i was expecting crappy action movie where Cage acts like a bad ass through out the movie. simply neat little story can be found there and i liked it.

Fantastic. Amusing and creepy series of horror stories woven together into one twisted evening. Great mood and direction, some fun twists, a decidedly wicked sense of humor and a great feeling of no one being safe. Recommended.

It's a damn shame that Saw Elevntybillion will get made and Trick 'r Treat wasn't even released in theaters.

Very interesting to say the least. I kind of agree with what many people have said about this film this is a realistic portrayal in how we humans deal with these types of situations. The documentary style of shooting was great and
it did a good job of transffering that to a cinematic style of storytelling.

Just wished that it kind of focused more on the situation itself instead of one man.

It wasn't as enjoyable as the first one, that's for sure. It feels a bit like a simple rehash. But, like you said, it's o.k.

One thing I did like a lot was
Rocco's
appearance and speech about man and man's perseverance. It felt really genuine for some reason. It was also the one thing about the movie that was original in some way.

That was the worst part of the film IMO. Not to shit on your post but I found that speech to be horrible with a perspective that reeked of rose tinted glasses and circle jerking to the audience. The points made in that speech were just idiotic.

Live Free or Die Hard.

Sigh. I put off seeing this for a long, long time, as the original Die Hard is one of my favorite movies ever (and the two sequels aren't far behind) and this just looked like an abomination. Well, I finally watched it last night and now wish I hadn't. This was fucking terrible. It didn't feel at all like a Die Hard movie (McClane was totally forgettable), the chemistry/dynamic between Willis and Long was horrendous, there were countless plot holes, the "bad guy" was unbelievably shitty, the casting was weak (Kevin Smith, are you fucking kidding me)... I could go on and on. I just really hope they don't make another, which is still rumored, I think.

The film was a mixed bag. It was certainly a serviceable action film but I felt Blomkamp dropped the ball by ditching the allegorical premise so early into the film. I went in expecting a pseudo intelligent science fiction film and unfortunately came away with your typical action scifi wrapped in an interesting backdrop.

It's also home to everything I hate about Hollywood's casting. Even in a film taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, where 84% of the population is not white, nearly every major character in the film is white. And don't even get me started about the absolutely disgusting depiction of Nigerians...

And what's with the recent trend to subtitle Africans who are speaking perfectly legible English? :lol

Oh I agree.

But, at the same time it seemed somehow the only heartfelt thing in that movie. The only part with a little energy.

Yeah, after dwelling on it for a couple of days, that's how I feel about the movie as well. I don't mind the movie being about a little more than just bloodshed. But if it had retained some of the energy and mood of the first two chapters, it could have been a classic. Mikkelsen was great. And the music in those first chapters is really, really good.

I watched gentleman broncos yesterday. It provided a few good laughs - Jemaine Clement is hilarious - but the lead dude was really annoying to me.

My Darling Clementine (1946)
8/10
A very solid western by John Ford. It's a well-known story (the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday and the shootout at the OK Corral), I'd already seen Tomb Stone and Wyatt Earp but the movie didn't fail to grab my attention. It's funny though that whenever I see a western from the forties I can't help thinking of the Lucky Luke comics they must have inspired. In this movie it was the scenes with the the pompus actors who were lucky not to be carried out of town on a rail.

A Single Man (2009)
6/10
The story was supposed to be about the recovery from grief after a lover died, but I couldn't help feeling it was also about older gay men fantasizing about young boys. I found the idea of the young androgynous student seducing an older college professor totally unconvincing. rather creepy. The best scene in the movie was when Charley (Julianne Moore) and George (Colin Firth) reminisced about the past and future, about the impossibility of relationships.

Shutter Island (2010)
8.5/10
This is another crowd pleaser by Martin Scorsese, one of the best movies of 2010 so far.

Der letzte Mann (1924)
7/10
This is my third Murnau pictire after Sunrise and City Girl. I'd have rated it between those two if it hadn't been for the final act which ruined the whole movie. The then immensely popular actor Emil Jannings didn't like the dark original ending of the movie and demanded a happy ending - which he got. In the final ten minutes the demoted porter suddenly gets rich and now we how the tables turn. Even though the movie deliberately states that happy endings such as these don't happen in real life, it still feels like a cop out. The making of documentary is a must see, just like in Sunrise there's an incredible amount of visual trickery going on. It's an eye opener if you previously thought that film making in the 20ies must have been primitive.

Les diaboliques (1955)
8/10
This is a surprisingly dark suspense/horror movie about two women plotting and executing the murder of an abusive husband. Stuff like this would never have gotten past the Hollywood censors in the fifties.

Jaws (1975)
9/10
For some reason I've managed to miss seeing this movie for the past 30 years. What a mistake. It's a gem. Even though I already knew the plot and had seen many of the key scenes, I was still shocked by the scares, riveted by the action scenes and pleasantly surprised by the character development. I laughed out loud when Hooper and Quint started bonding by showing off their various scars.

Watched this yesterday. Pretty awesome ,but way to much emphasis and a pretty meh plot. Actions scenes were pretty fantastic though. And I just like the way French movies look.

I don't believe it.

I've been saying this since seeing it in September. No one believed me.

Great lead performance, nicely shot, disturbing...

Thank you for spreading the word. Given that Boll's output has been crap until now, I don't think people will be racing to check this one out.

Watched 'Soul Power' again last night.

You guys gotta take my word for it- this is an incredible documentary. It looks like a Wes Anderson movie, except it's authentic footage from 1974. Bill Wither's performance is worth it alone, though the whoel movie is great.

You were the one that convinced me to go to the 2nd screening at Fantastic Fest, weren't you? I really wish this made my top 10 last year. It was so close. Does it have a DVD release soon?

Maybe. I saw it at the second screening, because a couple friends loved it and another said it was reprehensible. Does that sound familiar?

But yeah, it is now available on DVD and BR, as of last Tuesday.

Wait, did we sit together then? I can't remember much since my mind was warped from watching like 40 movies that week.

Hmm. I know for certain that I was with at least two friends, one a fetish model and the other director JT Petty (everyone should watch his movie The Burrowers). Maybe you were there? Sorry, my brain was just as overwhelmed as yours that week.

I agree. The first one was much better, though (less emphasis on its meh plot :p).

I also agree with the comments on Valhalla Rising. It's a pitty, really, since there was some really awesome parts of the movie and loads of potential.

I saw Undisputed III last night. Pretty awesome, though it dragged at times. I enjoyed it a lot more than the second one. 2nd best direct to dvd film I've seen (the latest Universal Soldier being the best).
