Elite Squad 2

Awesome movie !
But it is some depressing stuff, specialy for people who live in Brazil ... but gave me even more hopes for Padilha doing some crazy stuff in Robocop (high hopes for creative control)
Also, loved how they incorporated some of the "fascist" stuff people said about the first one

Monsters

"... Oh wow really? Is that how they chose to end it.. ok then"

I mean what is this. Heavy handed political message, which I personally hate in alien movies like this. They kept the (major story spoiler)
"Monsters" out of the movie for most all of it, which I thought was supposed to be the main pull with a title like that. Unless they were saying "omg American politicians are the monsters hur hur"
This is essentially a slow-paced drama about two characters, but even then
we don't get closure for the two main characters with that horribly half done ending.
I guess I just went in with the wrong expectations, considering the most action in the movie was in the first 5 minutes. Beautifully shot though and I liked the characters well enough.

3/5

I agree. This movie was crap. You liked the characters, but I thought they were boring and
had zero chemistry, which is funny because I think they're an actual couple.

The visuals of this film we're awesome. I agree the Rashomon story-telling style was great, but what really blew my mind was the impressive cinematography and the pretty color palette. What part of it do you find boring?

The Hangover (the first one)

Figured I needed to see it since the second one is coming out. Definitely had its laughs and moments, but it was soooooo typical frat-boy humor. looooooool it's mike tyson I know him the guy with the lisp looooooooool, looooooooooooooooool they stole a tiger dude looooooooooooool, loooooooooooool naked asian dude on his face loooooooooool (though his first few smack talking lines later on were comedic gold, at least until that premise got beaten to a bloody pulp) Very quotable at least. Points for being actually somewhat realistic and cohesive, a compelling sort of detective mystery-ish plot (reminiscent of The Big Lebowski). I'll say it was better than I expected, better than your average frat boy comedy these days, but funniest comedy of the decade it is not.

Didn't get all the hype either. The only thing that got a chuckle out of me was when Zack did the 'jerking' motions with the baby. The rest plain fucking sucked.

Harsh Times

A movie of bad decisions that just continues to escalate. In the beginning were supposed to see where Bale's psychosis comes from, but the sequence fails miserably. Then the rest of the movie is like Training Day, except with two unlikeable characters you can't root for and who don't know when to quit when they're ahead.

It could have been so much better if Bale and Rodríguez were going around shady parts of L.A. acting like detectives when they really weren't. They certainly had the look, attire, and vehicle to do it. That would have been a much better main plot to go along with the subplot about their career ambitions.

I can only recommend it to the most hardcore fans of Bale who want to laugh at his various accents and impeccable methodology when playing crazy people.

:lol wow, that is very embarrassing then. That should've been easily transferrable to the screen.

maybe it is because i've been watching this greater works, but they aren't as meaningful and are more obvious than the use of colors in his early work. the actions scene aren't as thrilling as they were in the theater either.

Have to agree. Just watched this and I thought it was great. Didn't know the director was in line to do the Robocop remake.. could be interseting.

Watched Insidious last night which was shit.

I finally watched Kick-Ass. I expected to be disappointed by it due to general reactions, but it was hilarious. It isn't a great film, but it's much better than I thought it would be.

I was disappointed that the film turned into a plain jane action movie
after Big Daddy died. There were interesting hints at the nature of the dysfunctional relationship between himself and his daughter before that, but it was never really explored
. Such a pity. Up until that point, I thought it might be more than a "good fun" film :/

Strangely, I am not at all hyped for the sequel the end promises.

I liked this quite a bit, but I knew what it was about before going in. I prefer these kinds of genre films though. If you went in expecting War of the Worlds or something I can definitely see the disappointment.

I think the closure for the two main characters was : "I don't want to go home". What happens next does not mean that we didn't get closure. Although, I do tend to dislike that type of circular ending gimmick.

It's true that the two leads are married.

Anyways, I just saw :

The mixture of intelligence, delusion, regret, and hope displayed by Kurzweil was explored well enough. What really struck me was that the film was surprisingly sad to me in a few parts, I wasn't ready for that. Seeing that room with all of his fathers belongings....I went from thinking "Wow, he's optimistic" to "Fucking crackpot" to "I understand" all in the span of 90 minutes.

You should check out the comic.

So, I watched Videodrome just now, for the first time. In lieu of my usual paragraph, I'll keep it short: were I to try and be objective about the movie I'd likely be pretty 'meh' on it, as a lot of it is really just weirdness for the sake of weirdness (really, it's the plot and visuals that are memorable, not the characters and/or the way that the writing explores its issues to any depth), but I really did enjoy it and find it extremely entertaining for those things that I said were memorable.

I had no idea that they remade Red Dawn. I got a pass to see it, but due to being busy i skipped out on it. Also didn't know Chris Hemsworth is in it. Big fan of him now because Thor was great.

Any-who going to see Andrew Niccol's new film called "In Time" tomorrow. Will post my thoughts after i see it.

How was it? Niccol's work is interesting and I just read about In Time the other day.

What I've been watching:

Saving Private Ryan - The opening battle is quite memorable and there's good performances from the actors. Is it just me or was there a lot more shakycam in the battle sequences than say something like Band of Brothers? That distracted me somewhat.

Is the premise plausible? With the brothers that the story is loosely based on, the soldier that was sent home wasn't hunted down at the frontline. I don't know one way or another, it just made me think would they really give all those men's lives for one Private. (Even if he is the last surviving of 4 brothers)

The Maltese Falcon (1941) - I think I like Hammett's novel more, but the film is still very impressive. Bogart is great and the film is very entertaining. I'm currently reading The Big Sleep and will watch that too when I'm done.

Apocalypse Now Redux

Yeah, theatrical version is vastly superior over Redux.
"Clean" getting a proper/fitting burial was nice, but the rest of the stuff with the French was too long and boring. And the more Brando, the better IMO.

My favorite war movie ever.

The story is partially based on this situation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niland_brothers

Crank 2 - Way over the top in the beginning, and not really in a good way. It got pretty fun after the static electricity BS.

Troy - Worth a watch, considering it's ~3 hours. Any scene with Achilles was a good watch.

Are you talking about the Director's Cut? I didn't like the original version, but I hear it's a movie that benefits greatly from the Director's Cut.

Troy spoiler:
That Achilles vs Hector fight was something special wasn't it?

Hobo With A Shotgun - Sooo awesome. It felt authentically old school, from its batshit plot to its music to its ultraviolence. This also would have been the greatest videogame plot ever.

FYI Saving Private Ryan catalysed shaky-cam in movies. Only other directors don't have the same understanding of the method as Spielberg. Goddamn it Greengrass, you still have to frame your action properly. Shaky cam close-ups of character's lapels do nothing for the narrative.

Yes, though I can't comment on the original.

I was rooting for Hector. Too bad he only scratched his armor.

I love the first 1/3 of Videodrome then it gets all gross/weird/pointless.

I saw it for the first time last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It didn't lose me but I do tend to enjoy films that explore dark hallucinatory territory.

If you (or anyone else here) hasn't seen it, I'd recommend The Fly which is the film Cronenberg made immediately after Videodrome. I think it is a far more balanced film, and most agree that it's pretty great.

Kagemusha: I don't have much to say about it other than that I enjoyed it a lot.

Blow Out: This was pretty stupid, but not horrible.

Somewhere: I... loved this. Hilarious.

I'm looking for comedies from the past couple of years.
I don't really have a specific type I'm looking for, so I'm willing to try any.

Last recent comedy I saw was, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I thought was alright.

Thank you.

Which version did you watch ? Where I am I think only the cut off DVD with a shitty transfer is available.

Whatever is up on Netflix instant, looks like it's the 159 minute version, in HD (720). I guess that's what you mean by "cut off" version, transfer didn't look bad to me.

I'll probably get a lof of flak for this suggestion, but the only recent one (well... 2005) I can think of is Little Miss Sunshine.

Fake Edit : Oh and A Serious Man which is very particular though and not really the kind of laughing out loud comedy.

Borat and the Informant are worth checking out. I find Wedding crashers and The 40 Year Old Virgin hilarious.

Of course Up and Toy Story 3 if you haven't already watched them.

Haven't seen Pineapple Express, Zack, Miri Make a Porno and the Hangover.

Yeah, that's the US/shorter version. I think the full one is closer to 3 hours.

Ah... Netflix... I wish you'd accept me and my fellow digital peasants...

is the netflix one not the Criterion version that is 180 mins?

It's 159 mins, there's no Criterion logo at the beginning, just a 20th Century Fox one. I'm sure the Criterion transfer is better, but like I said I didn't think it was bad. Certainly not unwatchable like some of the shit they throw up. Reading up on the 20 minute difference I guess the biggest loss is Takashi Shimura, but the thing was long enough as it is, and I liked it.

My recommendations: Me And You & Everyone We Know, Eagle Vs. Shark, Napoleon Dynamite, Observe & Report. For the more regular Hollywood flavor: Superbad, Easy A and It's Kind of A Funny Story.

that's weird because they are using the criterion box art for the streaming box art. i wonder what the content management looks like behind the scenes there.

Red Riding Hood
How do stupid movies like these get greenlit?

Fair Game The one with Watts and Penn
Meh

Eva 1.11
Meh. How does Neo Tokyo rebuild itself? Everytime there's an angel attack the whole city gets wiped but somehow Shinji's apt and school is left intact and business is as usual.

Eva 2.22
Holy moly how awesome is this movie!!!!

Oh man I'm going to vent something that I'm quite embarrassed about, but it's the honest truth...I think Napoleon Dynamite is one of the top ten funniest movies made in the past decade and this is coming from a guy that absolutely loathes Jon Heder.
