Very unflinching violent revenge type movie from Korea, reminded me in a way of "I saw the devil" but much better imo. Worth checking out.

Great flick. Probably the best rape-revenge movie ever, even though, as another poster pointed out, it isn't specifically about rape. The culpability of some women in their oppression, or the oppression of other women, by accepting abuse rather than fighting or pressing charges, is a difficult topic to broach and I think this film does it perfectly.

Highly recommended.

I imported the Blu-ray but have not had the time to watch it.

Alphaville - 1965
I really enjoyed the film. Even though takes a lot from 1984, which, for me, was a good thing, it offers just enough to make it unique.

Watched Fargo for the second time yesterday, and ... enjoyed it.

What to say ... It's a total nut of a movie really. My Mum and I both felt nonplussed by the time everything fell out at the end, and agreed the 'purpose' of making the film must have been something along the lines of showing some of the strengths and weaknesses of 'common' (and commonly somewhat unseen) America.

But in truth I am a sucker for simple films where there's someone to identify with and root for. That's not what you get with Fargo, but so much the better if not all films pander to my uneducated palette.

Anyway.

First time I saw it was many years ago, and all I remember was I thought it was rubbish, probably for the reason above.

This time however I was able to appreciate it better, as a complete film, as a series of performances, and as a mood piece of sorts.

One thing that struck me as I enjoyed the cinematography, and the video/audio storytelling talent of the Coens, was that this film seems to land squarely in between Big Lebowski (<3) and No Country for Old Men.

On the one hand you have a warm, balls-out stoner comedy, and on the other you have death, violence and heartlessness up close.

Fargo seems to be exactly both of these things at once.

I thought everybody rooted for Marge. I guess she's not really someone you can relate with since she seems so unique and almost like an unrealistic person. Still, I love her to death.

Battles Without Honor and Humanity (original saga) - More times I watch the movies more I enjoy them. Mostly because it's easier to follow who's who :D Can't really say which one is my favorite but right now I would go either Proxy Wars or Police Tactics. Last scene of Police Tactics was really something (
Hirono and Takeda chatting it up while waiting prison transport and the cold Hokkaido wind howls in the background.
)

Marge was OK, but I don't think the film let any of its characters come away exactly like heroes.

Marge's reward for being a good guy is she gets to not die a horrible death, and instead can continue living a very average life and eating chips with her husband in bed.

It isn't exactly a feel-good movie in that sense.

i don't think antonioni is for me..

brianjones: what of Antonioni's have you seen? We had the L'Avventura argument a few pages back (I was on the side of it being mediocre), but if you haven't, watch L'Eclisse; I'd say it's the most purely entertaining of the ones that I've seen thus far.

I was having a blast watching Apocalypse Now Redux, must have been 15 years since I last saw the movie (theatrical cut) but those added scenes just brought the film and my attention to a standstill, I was willing them to finish just to get the story back on track.

I must be the only one that likes that playboy scene. That French scene is horrible though.

Just got back from the theater.

Super 8 - Good, but could have been a masterpiece.
There was so much left unexplained about the alien, so little was really revealed or explored concerning it's character and how it fit into everything. The story centered far more around the relationship of the kids and the parents, which to me felt ineffective more often than it should have. Also, the military villain was a lame character and when he died, I didn't feel like anything was really accomplished. The pacing of the ending was pretty bad as well.

That being said, the direction was mostly solid, the special effects were fantastic except for a few silly hiccups concerning explosions that I noticed, and I left the theater entertained. Definitely worth seeing but it's not something you have to get to in theaters.

Bridesmaids - For how long the movie was I was pleasantly surprised with how consistent the jokes were. I enjoyed almost every gag they pulled off and several scenes felt original, which is a rarity in a comedy (especially one that focuses on women). I had a great time with it, though it's not for everyone and you could easily enjoy it just as much with a few friends on a couch when it comes to DVD.

Now that I have that out of the way, I ended up watching two films that were about to expire in my instant que this week - Seven Samurai & Rashomon. These were my first Kurosawa films.

HOLY FUCKING GOD.

I cannot believe how ahead of his time this guy was. The angles, the symbolism, the actors that actually show emotions...in short, I was blown away. I can see why people have been raving to me about him for years.

Just got done watching Attack of the 50ft Woman (original) on TCM

Wow, it was great/hilarious. The fight between Harry and the butler was both funny and incredibly cheesy. And I was very glad that Nancy killed both Harry and his mistress. Well deserved deaths

And Nancy was hot as hell BTW, even if she was a little nutty

I've been wanting to see this movie ever since I was a kid. Finally watched it last night and... uhh... it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Kind of a let down, but it still had it's moments (none of which happened in the final 20 minutes).

Saw a pair of sports related movies recently

Bull Durham

Almost as boring as baseball itself with only a few good funny moments. Really, seeing susan sarandon whore it up was the only reason I kept watching

Hoop Dreams

Amazing documentary, even at close to 3hrs at length it held my interest throughout and the stories of these two was incredibly gripping.

Hrm. I really expected Frontier(s) to be more gory. Not that I usually go for this sort of thing, but to be honest, I'm a bit surprised it got an NC-17 compared to everything else that gets by with an R. It's ridiculous, tasteless, and I sort of enjoyed it in spite of myself although really it's just a bloodier, Frenchier Texas Chainsaw Massacre. As with all slashers, there's a fair amount of dumb shit they get away with by hiding it under the intensity of being chased around by inbred neo Nazi cannibal people. (See, this time there's slight political commentary re: right wing extremism bookending it instead of bottomless nihilism.) Like that the villains can't seem to hit the broadside of a barn with their guns unless the plot calls for someone to be dead.

Still and all, it wasn't a waste of my time, pretty much works for what it is, and it's certainly much better than High Tension in the uberviolent French horror subgenre. It's still silly, but just engrossing and intense enough that you don't notice for decent stretches of time until they steamboil a dude alive. And that kind of works for it. Now onto Inside!

I did not like Frontier(s) all that much. For a better Gallic take on TCSM, try Sheitan.

Inside is a good slasher.

Its feel good in the sense that that is the perfect life for her. She has a loving husband and a child on the way... even if terrible things happen outside of her life, they don't affect her peaceful and loving home life.

I keep trying to catch this but it's not anywhere near me and no one wants to make to drive to see it. Lame.
I've been meaning to see it and Cave of Forgotten Dreams, but I don't know anyone else who'd like to see either and I don't want to go to them alone. I especially don't want to go to the theater alone to see a romantic comedy.

Why not? I watched it by myself the first time. It isn't that much of a romantic comedy.

Due Date - Saw this last night with a date and was pleasantly surprised. I've always enjoyed RDJ, moreso in something like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang than Iron Man, and thought he did a great job here. The movie got a bit unrealistic towards the end, which I wasn't expecting, but decent overall.

7/10

Going to get high tonight and watch Sucker Punch for the first time. My friends all refused to watch it in theaters and it got bad reviews so I waited on it. I expect my mind to be blown tonight.

Friends With Benefits (B) - saw an early screening of this new film from Easy A director. Heads above No Strings Attached and a hilarious sex comedy for both men and women. You get to see Timberlake and MILA KUNIS' asses. So, that was a plus. Woody Harrelson is great in the uber gay supporting role.

Straw Dogs (A) - fucking amazing. no, not the 2011 version.

The Future (C) - I thought I liked Miranda July, but I must be wrong.

Green Lantern (D+) - thoughts in the official thread.

Shieetttt it's playing here tomorrow. May try to catch that and super 8 this weekend. Sounds like a good back to back.

Expendable, since you know about these things. What are the chances Submarine opens wide? Seems slim.

I recently saw the Russian films Nightwatch and Daywatch.

Some interesting visuals here and there, but all over the place, for the most part. Honestly, they just didn't explain the lore or the "rules" of the world enough. Still, it's always interesting to see these "blockbuster" type movies coming from someplace other than America.

Extremely, extremely slim :( Didn't do very well for TWC and I can't see it going much further. I know it just got released elswhere on DVD, may be able to import a copy. It's worth it. Fantastic film.

Goddammit. I need that movie.

Capt: I'm thinking of seeing one or the other tomorrow, matinee

Both movies I watched tonight hovered around average and involved super powers.

Green Lantern: 2.5/5
The lantern planet looks awesome, Reynolds is pretty great, supporting cast is alright. Script is a mess. The film can't decide whether it wants to be a full-on fantasy or a gritty action movie or a traditional drama. Instead of carving one niche in the flooded superhero subgenre in order to set itself apart, it tries to carve a few and none work. Add to that the fact that the second act has been done way too often. It's frustrating, and that feeling only grows BIG-ISH SPOILERS
Sinestro after the credits is a hundred percent inconsistent with his character and just plain stupid
. Somehow, though, I was still entertained enough. There was enough good in the movie to justify it being a new franchise. I could see the eventual sequel being fun if the creative team looks back on this one and sees what they could switch out and improve.
It might have been a 2/5 if not for Blake Lively.

Dakota Skye: 2/5
Not a superhero movie, and a friend had a theory (with nothing to really back it up) that there was no superpower at all. The premise that Dakota can see through lies is a nice enough manifestation of the cynical and asocial demeanor many take on around age 18, at least in my experience. Unfortunately the idea doesn't go anywhere beyond that. Some of the writing feels right, but with bad acting, a phoned-in "indie movie" soundtrack and absolutely terrible camerawork, I can't recommend this to anyone.
