I think I got American cinema covered, and I cannot believe it has taken me this long to get into foreign flicks... here are my three latest:
Forget the fact that I think the mom is a total MILF, it is a silly premise, yet very well done and entertaining. It was a great way to portray what East Germans must have felt and gone through, and the ending was very satisfactory.
GOD YESS!!! Monica Belucci. An amazing portrayal of what I think every young boy has gone through. Great coming of age movie, that is funny at times, engaging, sad, frustrating, and also realistic. Moreover, it's amazing portrayal of small-town mentality and life. Monica Belucci was a great casting choice, because 1) we get to see her boobs 2) she gives off that vibe of something beautiful, mysterious, unreachable, and perfect that the boy fell in love with. Malena joins the crew of foreign chicks from movies that I'm in love with, along with Amelie and Flor Moreno (Spanglish).
HOLY SHIT! One word: Epic. For the 3 hours that you are fixed to the characters and the plot, this movie takes you through every emotion in the book. Laughter, excitement, suspense, sadness, anger, confusion, romance, all in a well crafted movie that greatly reflects a time period and a culture. The battles felt realistic, and so was the outcome. Great ending too: throughout the movie I had a perception about the leader of the seven samurai
he said he had many battles, and had lost all of them, so I saw him as a failed samurai that was the only thing the villagers could get. I love how in the end he says they were once again defeated, but it was because his fellow samurai were dead, with little recognition, fame, or fortune. Just men lost on the job.
Have you watched Russian and Eastern European (Polish, mostly) animation from the early 20th Century? The stuff that influenced the Brothers Quay. Or Zbigniew Rybchinsky?
I do have an excellent collection of animated Soviet propaganda films, but have seen very little else in the way of traditional European animation, largely because it doesn't seem to be especially available for viewing. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. Rybchinsky's work sounds quite intriguing, though, and a good chunk of it appears to be on DVD, so Netflix ahoy!
I'm a big admirer of the stop-motion work of Jan Svankmajer and the aforementioned Quay Brothers. Kino's Kihachiro Kawamoto and Jiri Barta sets have been in my 'to see' list for a while, too.

Let the Right One In - amazing film. i was thoroughly engrossed by it after like 5 minutes. so good...not much else to say
Pride and Glory - boring. there was nothing new in this movie that hasnt been done before and that was sad. I love Norton and watched it for him, and he was just ok. i think i liked we own the night more than this. although i think it was better than street kings
I was not as impressed with Let the Right One In. I thought it was okay, but I spent a large part of the movie trying to figure out when the movie took place. It reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite in that respect. The clothing they wore was straight out of the 80's but I'm not sure if maybe Swedish people don't dress like this now?
I thought it was kind of ridiculous that
the one kid continued to hold Oskar's head under water as the other kids were decapitated and dragged through the pool.
Oh, I also watched The Darjeeling Limited but it's barely worth mentioning. Great looking but hollow movie. Didn't care about anyone in it. Wes Anderson has really gone down the shitter.

just finished watching slumdog millionaire for the second time. what a great movie, i really hope they do the bluray justice for it. will bring my bluray collection to a total of 5, with 2 being danny boyle movies (sunshine being the other)
Sunshine was a great BD, so I'm hoping Slumdog lives up to that. The movie is too gorgeous to even consider buying on DVD anyways.
Edit:
Oh yeah, I've seen some movies.
Milk - 4/5 ... could've been better, but it was certainly good.
Slumdog - 5/5 loved the shit out of it.
Frost/Nixon - 4.5/5 pretty damn awesome
The Wrestler - 4.75/5 awesome movie, but I still don't know what to think of the ending.
The recent alien movie thing with Jennifer Connely in it - 3/5 the movie was pretty bad but Connely is soooo damn hot.
I'll admit I'm still somewhat lost by the events that transpire in the 2nd half of the film, but boy is it pure eye candy through the whole thing. It's amazing how good the animation and film still looks punctuated by those strong elemental colours. I do question how a live version of Akira will work.
As a self-confessed Arnie fanboy it's somewhat embarassing to admit I had never seen this before. It's certainly nice to be able to put a film to a lot of those gold quotes I've heard so many times in various Schwarzenegger soundboards. Fairly simple and probably sits in the lower-tier of his action canon.
This is an often overlooked little film. Cage once again proves to be a much more engaging performer when playing troubled characters and Scotts direction here is light and breezy.
I was a big fan of Kim Ji-woon's last film Bittersweet Life so was really looking forward to this. It's certainly stylistically a big departure from his previous efforts with some absolutely stunning use of barren desert landscapes and some really imaginative set design. The story really seems like an afterthought with the action firmly taking center stage. Not such a bad thing, since there are some very unique set-pieces through the whole film, with the camera constantly on the move providing some very creative shots. Song Kang-ho again is typecast playing the clumsy but charming idiot he plays so well (Couldn`t help but think of his role in the Host or to a lesser degree Memories of Murder). Byung-hun is rather good in this too. It's a really odd film I'll certainly want to revisit at some point.
Baby Mama - Predictable fluff, but very watchable and has a certain charm. Tina Fey basically plays Liz Lemon and it had a very 30 Rock-ish style sense of humour, just not nearly as sharp. I adore Sigourney Weaver in comedic roles so i was disappointed by how little she was in it. 6/10
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - I enjoyed it mainly because of Jason Segal's amiable performance and willingness to debase himself on screen. :lol Otherwise, it was something we have seen a million times before, yet executed well enough. I was surprised by Kristen Bell's material. She has some really raunchy bits... 6/10
The Invasion - I was looking forward to this when i heard Oliver Hirschbiegel was on board. It's such a shame the studio didn't trust him and his final product. You can see his influence throughout as well as the painfully obvious changes to make it more "marketable". I actually was getting involved in it and liking it as well! There is some very effective editing and cinematography that generates some real tension, but it is squandered by the end, with the absolutely awful and literally slapped on ending. I wish i could see the original version of the film, as there was so much potential on display. 5/10
The Express
It was alright. Kinda strange to have a story about the first black player to win the Hesiman, but majority of the movie takes place his first season playing, not the season he wins. It was alright.
City of Ember
WTF? This movie was bad. Just bad.
We are stuck in this town. We ride a waterslide. We are outside. Woohoo.
Terrible. The main character was obnoxious and too damn childish to be taken seriously, even for a street performer. He just doesn't seem like a good person. The story telling was very slow and mundane. Useless details replaced possible exciting facts. What a great example of a poorly executed documentary.
Pretty good. Very informative and makes some nice arguments about how similar most Middle Eastern nations are to us, and how we can help shape our own defense through a better foreign policy. I really don't like his vegan fiance though.
Very funny movie. I didn't know you could hack the engine of a car, until now!
I just finished The Mist. Not really worth of all the praises it gets. Except for the end, it was brilliant. I knew there was going to be some kind of twist but still I was amezd with the end.
Totally loved this. The film is very minimal in it's direction and performances but Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman are so good they largely carry the characters through their mannerisms and expressions. I also thought it was interesting how sometimes the viewpoint changed from the feuding siblings to their Dad suffering from dementia. Refreshing to also see a film strike very close to the truth and not need a cotton candy conclusion yet still be satisfying.

Is this movie called The Good, the Bad, the Weird? I liked Bittersweet Life and may check it out one day.
Yes that's the one, as I said it's very different from Bittersweet Life (Or even Tale of two sisters) with narrative largely forgotten, but it's visually very interesting.
A list of movies I've seen in the last two weeks. Yes Man
A decent comedy. Rhys Darby was great in it and since he was my reason for going, I couldn't ask for much more. The first 20 minutes kind of dragged on, especially with them hitting you over the head with how much he said "no" but after the plot started moving, there were quite a few laughs. 3/5
Doubt
Very little actually "happens" in this movie but the dialogue is just so powerful. Meryll Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman carry the entire movie on their backs and Amy Adams brings nice support once again beautifully portraying innocence. 4.5/5
Synecdoche, New York
A great science fictionesque movie and once again, a great performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The ensemble cast as a whole was spectacular, especially the therapist and later with multiple Cadens and Hazels. Hazel's house was probably the funniest running gag in the movie. The one thing I could have done without was the daughter side story. The direction that went was a bit disappointing and overall I wish they would have focused more on Caden's inability to perceive the passage of time.
Caden: Adele has only been gone a week
Hazel: Caden, it's been 3 years.
(can't recall if those were the exact lengths of time but it was still funny)
Still, even with the complaints about how certain storylines concluded and perhaps the movie dragging on for a short while towards the end, the movie is an experience in itself and one of my favorites all year. 5/5
Slumdog Millionaire
I only really knew the basic premise of the movie going into it. Oddly enough, I assumed it was more about his life after Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I really enjoyed the entire film and it was one that managed to make me leave the theater with a smile on my face. It's the best of the 3 Boyle movies I've seen. 28 Days Later was a decent film and Sunshine had a good start but atrocious finale. I really need to add Trainspotting to my Netflix queue. 5/5
Let the Right One In
Finally got a chance to see this. I'm generally not a fan of "horror" movies though this film is barely one. The two main actors are great for such a young age and manage to pull together would could have been an awful film with the wrong casting. There were some things I wish were addressed further. I didn't even realize the
quick shot of "her" pelvis was showing that she was actually a he who had been castrated it was done so fast
. Plus, I wanted to know more about her dad. I'm sure the book describes it all but the viewer is pretty much left to just figure it out on their own. Once you find out about the first thing, your interpretation of Eli and her dad's relationship changes quite a bit. I'll likely pick up the book sometime in the future.
I wonder how the US remake will work. I either see it being a PG-13 movie with no blood/little violence or R with older actors playing high school age kids. Either way, I expect there to be none of the same charm that the Swedish film has. I also expect there to be a complete removal of the "twist." 4/5
Probably seeing Gran Turino and/or Benjamin Button this weekend and receiving Bicentennial Man and Infernal Affairs from Netflix tonight.
Gotta say I sort of liked it. It had a great beginning, and they certainly could have fleshed it out alot better than they did...easily could have been a series on TV or a trilogy.
That being said, movie was poorly put together, both direction and music wise. Acting hurt it alot too. I was surprised Diane Lane would associate herself with a film like this. She is fucking hot for her age.

I agree. I didn't think it was that bad. I bought the blu ray for $10 just because it was so cheap, and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't awful. I believe the movie was supposed to be made into a trilogy until the first one bombed. Bummer.
Last night I watched Tell No One. It's a French thriller that's pretty good. Although I thought that the big reveal at the end was a little contrived.

Yep. Not terrible, but such a cool subject matter seemed like it should have turned out so much better. I hated how Hitler was handled, and how Tom Cruise's character was the ultimate honorable badass.
Edit: Also, can anyone recommend me some good civil war movies? Older, newer, doesn't matter.
I dont think Ive seen this film since its initial theatrical release. Still enjoyed it although like many multi-character based films somewhat suffers especially with regards to length. I still think the Japanese portion of the film is the strongest and most powerful (Doesnt hurt its beautifully shot) with Chieko entering the night club being a particular highlight.
Gosh I haven't seen this in years and sadly no where as good as I remember. I still like it, but one can't help but feel a golden opportunity was somewhat missed (Especially in the last act where the film takes something of a nose-dive). As much as I'm not a fan of his, Robin Williams pretty much steals the show as the foul mouthed Rainbow Randolph and I totally didn't realize Stewart was in this.
I heard and read nothing but praise for this movie and I was afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype. Luckily my fears weren't justified. My god this movie is excellent. Mickey Rourke's performance is absolutely stellar.
i just saw Bolt and it was FANTASTIC. i have a soft spot for dogs so that might have helped its case, but man what a fun movie. it felt like when i first saw speed racer. low expectations but a big smile on my face the whole time.
as good as wall-e was, i think i had more fun watching bolt. doesnt mean bolt is better...just really more entertaining. looks like disney can do good without pixar
Excellent film about the need to make the most of every moment, and also about the pain of being an outsider. I thought how the movie handled Benjamin's personality near the end of the film was a bit of a logical inconsistency, but I still really liked all of the performances and characters.
Frost/Nixon - Effing brilliant. Best film i have seen of the "awards crop" thus far (i havent seen many). I'm not a fan of Ron Howard in general, so i was surprised. Very much a more subdued effort from him in comparison to his usual heavy handed execution, which definitely served the film well. The ensemble was superb. Langella deserves every bit of praise being lavished on him, and Michael Sheen was terrific as well. Rockwell, Platt and were Macfadyen were perfect in support.
It was such a compelling, often times funny screenplay. Its stage roots were obvious, but i don't view that as a negative. The intense closeups and brisk editing really kept me engaged. I was absolutely riveted. 9/10
Slumdog Millionaire - Story was contrived in a way that prevented it from getting an emotional reaction and the characters weren't particularly well drawn. Danny Boyle's energetic direction and its amazing visuals kept it engaging. I felt the first 2/3rds were great, but it kind of lost its way with a more conventional final third. 7/10
Tootsie - A lot of good natured fun, with a good script and great performance from Hoffman. Bill Murray was awesome in support. 7/10
I'd rate this a 7.5 - its essentially a kid movie but it really was missing a couple of key scenes that pertained more to the chidlren solving the mystery/being in jeopardy. There was a "oversized stag bettle antler" found but they never met one of these. So they spent time filming the girl finding the antler, the boy/girl meeting and talking about the antler, the boy looking up giant bug books and NO escape/monster bug encounter?! A real pity. Tim Robbin is grossly underused. the film had a very goonies vibe to it and was appealing to look at. I liked the ending although some felt that it felt like where the movie is really beginning.
City of Ember
WTF? This movie was bad. Just bad.
We are stuck in this town. We ride a waterslide. We are outside. Woohoo.
not that i think of it, it is a chapter by chapter remake of goonies. the only problem is the character lacked any charm. once they found the secret room the movie just went on auto pilot. tim robbins was a waste in the movie.
Digital Cable - watched Enchanted. Actually, really liked it until 15 minutes until the end, at which point I lost interest.
Also watched They Live which I haven't seen since the 80's when it was new. Roddy Piper N'at. love the way that electric bass guitar line plays at various points. "What's wrong, BAY-BEE" - best end of a movie evar.
Gran Torino Excellent performance by Eastwood. Some of the Hmong actors felt forced. Very good overall though. The Writer is from my state, MN, and kid who played Tao goes to the HS I graduated from.
Gran Torino was a great little flick, I think. It's not a timeless classic, but it's a very nice little self-contained package with Eastwood giving a great performance. Honestly, I quite liked it. Eastwood is a really terrific director, and this movie was another great addition to his catalog.
