A Korean film from 2005, directed by Kim Jee-Woon.

It is absolutely terrific. The director is quoted on the cover saying "I was inspired by Le Samourai and Scarface. If you've seen those films, and not seen this: get it. If you like 'Old Boy', but haven't seen this: get it.

Dr. Strangelove 5/5: One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. So many classic moments. And I know a lot has been said about how amazing Peter Sellers is in this, but George C. Scott deserves applause, as well. A hilarious performance ("They'll see the big board!").
:lol

My dad loves the "You'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company!" line.

I watched Precious and Inglorious Bastards back to back yesterday. Precious was ok, really nothing special. Just don't have much to say about it. 3 out of 5
Inglorious Bastards is amazing though. This was the second time I saw it and that movie just gets better with multiple viewings. Everything from dialog to cinematography is perfect. I don't think any other movie was able to keep me on the edge of my seat when I knew what was going to happen. And if Christoph Waltz doesn't get an Oscar I am going to be illegitimately upset! The only Tarantino's decision that still somewhat confuses me is casting of B.J. Novak (the guy from the office). 5 out of 5

The casting decision that really confused me was Mike Myers. I still have no idea if that was supposed to be some kind of joke or what :lol

It did not bother me that much. I think that it had something to do with the fact that there was only one other war meeting portrayed in the movie and in that meeting the Nazis were caricatures of themselves, I think that Tarantino was trying to do same for the British.

Thx, i watched this from your recommendation, and it was pretty good. lil bit cheesy and steven seagalesk at some parts and odd at some parts (
didnt he get shot in the face? the entire story with the girl is pretty bad. his boss overeacted a bit much, no? couldnt they have made the story a lil more believable
, but cool flick and nice cinematography XD

ALSO, i saw this

Fucking blew me away

It clipped him, I think. He definitely takes a preposterous amount of bodily damage all through the film. Fuck, though: he dishes out a lot.

The scene where he decides to fuck up the guys who spat stuff on his car window is excellent. I've wanted to do something similar on many occasions.

Irreversible. Except I stopped watching. You can possibly guess when. Fuck that.
Withnail and I. Superb. My new favourite film. I have been a fool to leave it unwatched all this time.
Brotherhood of War. A quite sentimental Korean war film; well, obviously a war film. Worth seeing.
Tokyo Zombie. Preposterous, and in most senses a bad film - but I did laugh a couple of times.

OUT OF FIVE STARS
200px-Trick_r_treat.jpg

Trick R Treat - ** 1/2 A fun take on Halloween even though for the most part it isn't scary at all. My biggest problem is when the film tries to project itself to something that it is not and I don't think it is as clever as it thinks it is.
up_in_the_air_poster_31092.jpg

Up in the Air - ** 1/2 Truth be told, this film could have been much better if it had a better director. Ivan Reitman isn't an auteur. The material is here for something great. There are three musical moments that happen within a couple of scenes between each other. Also, the added financial crisis commentary from someone who is obviously not struggling is a little disfranchising and misguided. Reitman also lacks a unique voice. There are some chuckle moments and the resolution shows that the foundation was something to be built upon. I think I was mostly eating it all up until he hit the zoom lens for when he goes to Wisconsin and feels like he is totally ripping off the style of Rachel Getting Married. The dynamic between the three leads are good though.
225px-Blind_side_poster.jpg

The Blind Side - ** 1/2 I am not going to lie but the real life story is really something and for whatever reason, I always get a little emotional thinking about it. It is pure wholesome goodness. The film itself is mostly that even though is pretty strictly paint by the numbers and by the time colleges are interested in him, I would sometimes just feel annoyed but I still had to watch it because I really did love the true story so much. It would be hard to totally fuck it up but maybe even harder to do something great with it too.
200px-Thebox2009posterteaser.jpg

The Box - * I figured out the mystery way too soon and the movie is just really fucking dumb. I am a defender of Southland Tales due to its many dimensions but The Box makes me wonder if I should even defend the incredibly flawed Southland Tales. At this point, I am convinced that Richard Kelly is a one trick pony.
200px-Bad_lieutenant.jpeg

Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans - ** 1/2 Nic Cage's performance wasn't as bat shit insane as I expected it to be nor did I think he was brutal as people hyped it up to be. I do think if Werner Herzog tweaked the film up for another month or so, the film could have been a lot better. The script needed to be punchier, more manic, and delusional for me to live up to the hype.
200px-Precious2009poster.jpg

Precious - *** Lee Daniels very well shows that he is very much more of a casting director than a film director. I think the film could have been shot a little bit more gritty, featured less of a soundtrack (and sometimes modern one but switches back and forth, huh?), and its "director's style" scenes felt mostly out of place but damn, the performances in this film were great.

The next couple of days I am going to catch up with some Criterions and some films that came out this decade that are on some of the Critic's best of lists.

Sword of the Stranger

Set during Japan's feudal period 'Sword of the Stranger' tells the story of a young orphan boy named Kotaro who finds himself pursued by ruthless group of soldiers in the employ of China's Ming Emperor. With no idea as to why he is being chased Kotaro desperately enlists the help of a mysterious ronin named Nanashi (literally meaning Nameless or No Name) who has the curious habit of fighting with his sword sheathed, although this doesn't appear to make his skills any less lethal. As the reasons behind the Ming's pursuit become apparent Nanashi finds himself having to relive and face up to the past that has for many years haunted him if he is to have any chance of saving Kotaro from his would-be captors.

Directed by first-timer Masahiro Andō and produced by Bones 'Sword of the Stranger' is a real visual treat. The high-octane fight scenes are lavishly animated and expertly choreographed with a visceral sense of speed, but that's not to say the scenes without action aren't just as beautifully presented. The artwork and animation remain consistently excellent throughout and while some may find the colour palette subdued, the scenes of wanton bloodshed provide a stark contrast against the almost ethereal depiction of the landscape.

In terms of the story 'Sword of the Stranger' does nothing you won't have seen before, but has the definite virtue of not trying to do too much. The film is expertly paced, never once dragging or out-staying it's welcome - a pleasant suprise considering this is Masahiro's directorial debut. The characters will seem pretty standard to most, Kotaro is initially standoffish and reluctant to show his vulnerability while Nanashi attempts to hide his wounded past through humour and an anti-hero attitude straight out of a Clint Eastwood western. Ultimately events force both Kotaro and Nanashi to open up and trust each other, but the point is never forced home and feels like a natural progression for the characters.

Overall 'Sword of the Stranger' is a spectacular achievement and not just for the superlative animation. The characters are believable and more importantly likeable, the story is entirely engaging without ever feeling bloated, the music is suitably epic and the visuals are thoroughly intoxicating, the end result is a highly enjoyable anime feature that remains entertaining from start to finish.

Just watched Zoolander again with some buddies.

We laughed our asses off once again, discovering countless jokes we missed before. This has to be at least the 5th time we've watched the film, and it kills us every time.

I've concluded that it is my movie of the decade. Absolutely fantastic :D

I went and saw Fourth Kind today, I thought it was pretty interesting until I found out
it's not based on real stuff.

Had I known that going in, I think I would've enjoyed it way less though, so I guess it's ok.

I never get tired of watching Zoolander. It's my favorite comedy of the decade.

Saw Ocean 12. Whoever wrote the scriprt should be shot.. I mean the whole movie was just absolutely idiotic especially the "twist" at the end... BUT it was entertaining nonetheless, score was awesome, acting so superb so besides the horrendous script it was a fun movie to watch.

Also saw Smokin'Aces which just tries way too hard to be edgy and cool, at least the script was kinda o.k. in that one..

saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. was so annoyed by it that i need to get all the following shit off my chest

first of all the visual style was horribly tacky and unfortunately this is not something confined to BB. other period pieces made in recent years like The Aviator and Changeling are guilty of this as well, albeit to a lesser extent. we have come to know the first half of the 20th century thru movies and newsreels of that era and thus we have a mental image of it being in black and white. Now with modern movie technology filmmakers are given the opportunity to portray that time as it really was, as it really looked. What irks me about movies like BB is that instead of going for even the slightest bit of realism they apply these kitschy sepia tones as if it were permanently dawn and give everything this really nasty saturated look. as a result we get images produced by a fabricated nostalgia for a time we haven’t experienced ourselves and know only vicariously in the first place and it misshapes our conception of it for a second time

but the vomit-style visuals are only a part of the movie’s larger schmaltzy aesthetic. When the movie opened with the hackneyed narrative gimmick of ‘old person’s life is revealed on their deathbed’ i knew i was in for a very sour treat. Add to that the unnecessary narration and standard-fare piano-and-strings score and by now we have an entire movie that is drenched in fake emotionalism

jesus i havent even written about what happens in the movie. thankfully it wasn’t much.

a man lives a very normal and quite boring life despite having an interesting condition (premise entirely squandered), remains very stoic throughout and barely has a distinguishable character arc (or a personality, for that matter). his narration and the people around him bestow on us some facile ‘aphorisms’ with the main one being EXACTLY the same as the famous one from Forrest Gump: you never know what’s going to happen blahblah. there is of course a woman in his life and this is where the movie goes from being dull to being offensively bad. between Jenny from Gump and the Blanchett character in this one i'm beginning to wonder just what this lousy writer has against women. Blanchett only becomes somewhat likeable in the latter half of the movie/her life (stupid selfish young women psshhh) and that only happens because of the most execrable sequence i have seen in a looong time. Button tells of a series of minor, unrelated coincidences (that’s right) that end up causing an accident with Blanchett being the victim. this forces her to abandon her one passion in life (dancing) so she can finally hook up with Button instead. that this happens is not only unequivocally positive according to the writer, but it was FATE and GOD probably wanted it that way. first AIDS and now this? fuck you, dipshit.

anyway the movie kinda peters out after that with nothing really happening. negative zero stars.

The Hurt Locker. Not much to say, except it was awesome. Also rewatched Inglorious Bastards, those two are probably my favorites this year, with District 9 a close third.

This makes no sense. How can we possibly know ourselves what the first half of the 20th century looked like if our only exposure to it is through films and newsreels that "misshape our conception of it"?

oh come on, don't be pedantic. you don't need detailed eye-witness accounts and hours upon hours of colour footage of cityscapes to surmise that never in the history of civilisation did the world ever look so disturbingly glossy. it's like they smeared thick layers of shoepolish over everything from buildings to faces to the damn ocean. so horrid to look at.

Just glad to see that someone else hates Benji Button as much as I do.

I watched a movie at home today for the first time in months: Johnnie To's Vengeance. Ugh. So numbingly cliché and silly. There's even an "umbrella" moment that looks like it was from Sparrow's cutting room floor. I've tried several of his movies over the years and never found any to be more than mediocre at best.

Being a David Bowie fangirl, I bought some of his movies on eBay:

Also, my parents bought me the "Star Trek" film for Hanukkah, so I watched that recently with my dad.

I saw 'Gamer' last night. And it was pretty decent actually. It felt like a contemporary update of a film like 'Running Man' (1987). A more serious version of 'Crank'.

Marketing paints a poor picture of this film. It's good.

200px-Infinite_playlist.jpg

Enjoyed it, but it was nothing original. I tend to like these dramedy movies though. 8/10

200px-One_Flew_Over_the_Cuckoo%27s_Nest_poster.jpg

Jack is amazing. 9/10

I recently saw 2010: The Year We Make Contact and Dog Day Afternoon; in different ways both very enjoyable films.

I've always had a soft spot for 2010.

As do I. Peter Hyams is in no way a great, or even particularly noteworthy director, but he managed to be involved with a fair number of better-than-they-should-be films in the late '70s and early '80s (and the Relic in the '90s!).

flammen-og-citronen.jpg

Flammen & Citronen - Pretty good. A little slow at times. Need to rewatch due to subtitles hurting my brain.

the-blind-side_290.jpg

The Blind Side - A good heartwarming story. I'm a sucker for sports movies, and this was pretty good.

coming_to_america.jpg

Coming to America - Classic Eddie Murphy.

821415the-siege-posters.jpg

The Siege - Pretty good crime thriller.

Superbad: I just couldn't stand how socially retarded they were. I know this was the whole point but nearly every conversion was so damn awkward I just had to turn off after the party scene with that girl. :lol I don't know if I'll ever try to watch it again, at least not alone.

The Hangover: I watched the first 15 minutes and stopped because I didn't like it for some reason.

Gladiator: Watched it again for the first time after a few years and boy, what a movie! Epic in every way and beautiful like few others. Ridley Scott knows his job! Impressive!

Serenity: (that Firefly film) : I really enjoyed it! Not one boring minute and very likeable characters. It reminded me a bit of Bebop in certain parts and I'll probably watch the series now! Very cool!

Princess Bride: I never expected it to be so funny. Everyone is talking about this being a cult classic and I totally see why. I loved the Spaniard! Pure entertainment form beginning to end. :)

Zombieland: This one was good! I don't get the comparisions with Shaun of the Dead, it's something different. I don't think it's half as memorable as SotD but I laughed a lot and it was a good ride.

I saw Oldboy for the first time yesterday, goddamn. I almost puked after the climax. Great movie though, the ending is crafted so masterfully all it's faults just fly away

I saw the The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus today. Great movie and the visuals were amazing especially the dream sequences. The only thing which bugged me was what exactly tony was and how he was connected to everything.

the-white-ribbon.jpg

Going completely blind into this, I was really confused and kind of bored during the first half, but then I started to figure out what the fuck was really going on and after that point I was just Amazed. Best movie i've seen in a long time, probably all year tbh

I finally got a chance to watch Inglorious Basterds.
Great movie, very fun to watch. I <3 all Tarantino movies, it didn't disappoint. My only complaint is that Brad Pitt was miscast, he wasn't necessarily bad but I felt like his performance was a bit forced and unnatural for him. If QT had cast a better actor for the role, it could have been an awesome character. I'm sure some people feel differently, though, I was kind of stoned at the time so that might have made a difference. Anways, I still really liked it and look forward to repeat viewings.

Now I just need to see that Avatar movie...

One of those movies that you will like even better if you see it a second time. I think that Brad Pitt's character works pretty well. I'm pretty sure that he was supposed to be a bit exaggerated.

Caught up on a bunch of recent movies over the holiday break:
District 9 - Really liked it. Thought the main character was a dick and deserved to die at the end...
whole KO'ing the prawn that was trying to help him only to fuck up the ship in his attempt to do who knows what with it
.
8/10

A Perfect Getaway - Enjoyable despite the fact that Milla stayed in her cloths the whole time. Pretty good thriller with a decent twist.
7/10

The Hangover - Overall a good flick, consistently funny throughout...but nothing laugh out loud hilarious.
7/10

Inglorious Basterds - Fantastic movie...looked like it would have been a lot of fun to make. I can't believe it took me so long to watch this one, but it was worth the wait.

What?? I thought this film was really good. They maybe shouldn't sell it as pure comedy, though. It was more awkward and sad than many dramas most of the time. :lol Great film with a great emotional Robin Williams, imo. Huge spoiler!
I almost applauded when that stupid boy died while still feeling sorry for the dad.

It seemed to be a good movie but I couldn't really follow it.

Basically like a female oriented Office Space. Well that's a simple comparison.
Really like it though, it's a good film in it's own right with a good blend of humor.

Slow moving at first but all in all I loved it.

I just watched The Hurt Locker as well. I liked it a lot, but it felt somewhat weird. The movie was predictable which I did not expect... Still a great action movie.

District 9: I bought it since well there's no place around to rent it at and I don't want to use the Redbox so I just said what the hell and bought it off Itunes. It's alright I guess. I liked some off the action and it was pretty well told. Not worth buying though I don't think I'll be watching it again any time soon.

Probably one of my new favorite bonds, right up there with my favorite bond and favorite movie Goldfinger. I loved everything about it. It was really great and yeah better than you only live twice and shame Lazenby didn't come back for another, the idiot. Ending was heartbreaking and got to me.
