Shutter Island: Did not like. Of course it's "well made" and all that, it's Scorsese, I just didn't find the narrative all that compelling. It's a personal thing though, I'm just not a fan of these kinds of movies. "These kinds of movies" being
where a bunch of stuff happens that is not at all what actually happened and the truth is revealed at the end, or is it???

Chinatown: Have seen it many times, it's one of my all time favorite movies, I just wanted to brag that I saw it on the big screen last night. :D

Get Him To The Greek - Meh at best. Would not recommend and would not see again.

Jonah and Russell are good as minor characters. A movie solely about the two of them just fails. They are both not nearly as funny/likeable/interesting enough to want to watch for and hour and a half. And Diddy was just terrible in this movie.

7. fallen angels - ****
I think War Kong Wai is at his best when is filled with whimsical spirits and with that sad, when a certain moment happens towards the end of the film, it takes you out of the film. I would rate this as my 3rd favorite War Kong Wai film and maybe the final act will grow on me more after some rewatchings. Feels like a sort of sequel to Chungking Express in a way.

That's because it was meant to be the 3rd story in Chungking Express. Has a number of loose connections.

I haven't seen Days of Being Wild yet. So far I rank them like this:

1. Chungking Express
2. In the Mood for Love
3. Fallen Angels
4. Ashes of Time

Next up will probably be Happy Together then Days of Being Wild then around to 2046 which I downloaded years ago and is sitting on a really old external.

Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love, 2046 are a loose trilogy. Recently re-watched DoBW and loved it even more. The opening scene grabs you and won't let go. There are weak moments but overall it's up and coming as one of my favorites of Wong Kar Wai.

Happy Together is absolutely brilliant. 2046 is probably his weakest film along with My Blueberry Nights. But at least 2046 has it's connections to ITMFL and DoBW.

If I was ranking top five WKW I'd do it like this:

1. In the Mood for Love
2. Chungking Express
3. Happy Together
4. Ashes of Time
5. Days of Being Wild

He's definitely my favorite director. I've seen every film multiple times, every time I enjoy something different.

Whaaaaaaaaat? You are.... so very lucky. Where/when/will there be another?

It was part of The Movie Experience Classic Screening Room series. A local theater here in Temecula plays one classic movie a month, this month was Chinatown. Last month was To Kill A Mockingbird, I think next month is The Odd Couple. I can't find a list online, but off the top of my head some of the other movies from this year are Cool hand Luke, It Happened One Night, East Of Eden, Blazing Saddles, and Mary Poppins.

I watched 500 days of summer a little while back and im looking to find another movie that has a similar feel. a feel good romantic/dram/comedy movie
preferably without michael cera because most of those movies are the same and sadly I have seen most of them

I just watched Shutter Island again. Usually I don't go out of my way to watch a movie within a few months after watching it, but it really helped me appreciate it a lot more. I loved it. Some of the shots were absolutely brilliant looking, and the music just reeked of a sense of dread.

Watching it again I noticed all kinds of little details I would have never been looking for upon the first viewing. Like the one scene earlier on when they are questioning an older patient and she mentions that Dr Sheehan isn't hard on the eyes, and the camera goes to Mark Ruffalo as the woman glances at him, who is of course that doctor. I got a chuckle out of that for some reason because Di'Caprio's character has no idea. But yeah, I noticed how intricately orchestrated the whole thing was upon watching it again.

I just got finished watching Sergio Leone's westerns which were all freaking fantastic. I wanted to see what else he did, and I stumbled upon Once Upon a Time in America. I probably shouldn't even be asking this, but is it worth a watch? Is it really pushing 4 hours?

YES.

My favorite movie of all time, was just re-watching some scenes and thought about making a thread :lol

I watched Shutter Island and Ring of Darkness.

Shutter Island I liked a lot more than I expected given what I've been hearing people say about it. The closing line was really chilling.

Ring of Darkness I recorded on my DVR months ago just because it sounded like it could be a "so bad it's good" sort of thing. (The description was something like "A guy auditions for a boy band only to find out that they're actually zombies!"). Unfortunately it turned out to be just regular bad, not good-bad. :(

Lost in Translation
Eternal Sunshine already got mentioned.
Perhaps Garden State?

do not apologize, it was crap, they should do a shutter island riftraxx

Infernal Affairs: Just got around to watching this for the first time. Andy Lau and Tony Leung are amazing, as always. Enjoyed some elements of this movie more than The Departed, some parts of The Departed more.

As someone said, Garden State.

Go further back: Harold and Maude, Billy Wilder, Audrey Hepburn, Truffaut's series of Antoine Doinel films...

I find Juno offensively quirky, but that's mostly (entirely) because of the dialogue.

Who does Diablo Cody associate herself with so that she thinks shit like "honest to blog" is how people talk?

Diablo Cody.... is this some kind of joke?

martyrs_poster.jpg

Martyrs (Pascal Laugier, France 2004). Suspenseful, atmospheric and beautifully shot. Not for the squeamish, sure, but not really more extreme then other recent 'new era' French horror movies (À l'intérieur, Frontière(s), Haute Tension) but less conventional than the last two. I liked it.

the_prowler.jpg

The Prowler (Joseph Zito, USA, 1981). I felt like a geek when I immediately expected Savini's involvement when a head masterfully shattered :D. Never truly good or anything but enjoyable b-rate horror schlock. The poster is probably one of the best things about it. Kinda want to check more Joseph Zito flicks but this doesn't seem to be his best work... And what was up with the
strangled guy hanging in the shower for hours suddenly lunging towards the girl
?

poster_tormented_poster2.jpg

Tormented (Jon Wright, Great Britain 2009). Meh. entertaining moments but just not feeling it. Some original deaths. Brilliant music, Paul Hartnoll (Orbital) was responsible for selecting the music - pays off.

watched it on cable tv ($1 from red box is to much to rent this movie)
street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-dvd-box.jpg

0/5

the casting was just horrible in this movie but the biggest one is M. Bison

Kjm-030_The_Talented_Mr_Ripley_1999.jpg

Absolutely fantastic and extremely underrated. Fun to go back and see Damon, Law, Blanchett, and Paltrow earlier in their careers. Gorgeous photography and excellent soundtrack. A bit plodding in the middle, but man this movie surprised me. 9/10

The series of novels is also superb, and Ripley's Game the film is particularly badass.

Watching Riget 1 & 2 by Lars von Trier currently. Almost done with the first one. It's great so far. Mockumentary style horror comedy in a hospital. It has some of the darkest danish black humor. People who like Festen should like this.

Saw Southland Tales yesterday, had no fucking clue what was going on and still don't. However I found it highly entertaining and the 2 hours just flew by.

Maybe it is because I like movies that I don't "get" (Like Donnie Darko, or all these Lynch movies) maybe it's because of the cast (Loved SMG especially as a brunette, MM looked a bit strange as a blonde) or the OST, maybe it's because I couldn't tell if the acting was a bad on purpose or not, but I honestly don't care.

Ordered the book right after the end but I still don't really expect it to make sense after reading it.

8/10

I watched the Talented Mr. Ripely again last night.
Such a creepy, dark and suspenseful movie. I personally consider it to be the best performance of Matt Damon's career.
I'd give it a 3.7 out of banana phone.

Watched Sunshine today. I thought that the movie was really good and enjoyed it a lot, the first part was better than the second. The acting was overall pretty good and it is probably Chris Evans best role. Definitely worth a watch.

Figured this is a good a place to ask as any. There is this gif circulating on gaf (though I can't find it right now), with Denzel Washington doing some kind of trick with a cigarette. Does anyone know what movie this is from?

Prince of Persia

This was quite a good film, really. In fact, I damned enjoyed a great deal of it. Assassins could have been more cinematically deft and creepy - I thought they underplayed them a bit.

The most awesome thing was Jeff Murdock as Prince Tus. Oh, Jeffrey.

I'll be damned, Uwe Boll made an extremely enjoyable and well done movie. The subject matter in Rampage was a bit difficult to watch, but the film was well constructed and quite intelligent. My only complaint was the needless shaky cam, but outside of that, bravo Uwe, bravo. Consider me pleasantly surprised.

I watched Observe and Report the other day. I really enjoyed it, even though the funny bits were a bit sparse and sometimes too low brow. Mostly I enjoyed the dark comedy aspect. Not really a film I'd recommend to most people though.

I watched Toy Story 3. I haven't seen the reaction to the movie here yet, but if there are any haters...well, actually never mind. No one hates this movie. Except Armond White and that other dude.

Shutter Island .... My fuckin' Christ the first hour or so was slow as balls. Almost didn't redeem itself, but I'll go ahead and say it did. 7/10. (Very close to getting a 6, though. Had my head in my hands five or six times: some of the dialogue is painful - again, especially in the first hour.)

Everything is Illuminated ... Ehh. Different. Nowhere near a "wow, you must see this," but a far cry from "average" at the same time. Also a 7/10.

Cheers.

Funny movie, great style, some great scenes. As a whole, as a FILM, it's jumpy and weird.
Keaton is a great Batman, Catwoman is awesome. Penguin is good, but a little boring

OVERALL GOOD TIM

I don't know the gif, but I remember him doing some fancy smoking in the movie 'Fallen'

It's pretty good.

This week I watched:

- Triangle

Thought it was amazing. To say anything about it in detail kinda ruins to movie, so just go in blind. Don't even read the box. Just stick it in your player, dont even look at the menus, just watch! Of course, I am sure their are people who won't like the movie, but to say who they are would ruin things :lol :lol (9/10)

- Dante's Peak

Re-watched this 1997 movie for some reason. I still like it, but it seemed very tame now after the likes of 2012 and other big budget disaster movies. Even SyFy's TV movies seem more intense nowadays. I guess that is the price you pay for relying heavily on effects. (4/10)

- Pandourm

A Space Horror movie that is not all that Horrorish, but still turn out good in the end. It's another one of those movies that works best if you go in blind. I was hyped by a friend to watch it for its scares, but ended up liking the story more (7/10)

- OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies & OSS 117: Lost in Rio

These are Spy Spoofs in the same vein as the Austin Powers movies, but a bit more grounded in reality - although still quite crazy. If you liked Get Smart, and can deal with both of them being French language films (with subtitles) then they are worth a watch. A lot of the comedy is visual though, so you wont have to read to get the laughs. (7/10 & 6/10)

1. no country for old men - *** 1/2
First time rewatching it since I saw it in theaters. Some of the symbolism feels too easy for ridicule and lacks emotional depth for when it happens but other than that, it is as suspenseful as I first saw it and the humor seemed more abundant.

I'm not as enamored of it as I was when I first saw it, but I think what still redeems it for me is how it feels true to both McCarthy and the Coens. There's something very careful, almost reverent, about it. So even if it doesn't cut very deep, I think it has a dignity about it uncommon in the Coens' work, which makes its nihilism more interesting.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005)
starts with a man feeling unwell and it's easy to guess where it ends. takes realism to a point where it's practically indistinguishable from documentary. it builds and builds in a natural way with lazarescu being brushed off by one caustic and apathetic doctor after another. i felt helpless watching this, much like the ambulance assistant who stays with lazarescu, another helpless spectator. and i felt very strongly that the film wanted me to feel helpless. and so when what is described in the title inevitably happened, i felt run-down.

Yeah, I like this. Too much is said about how funny the film is (I didn't find it funny at all) or how politically engaged it is (okay), but what really impressed me was how physical it is. But I didn't feel run down, exactly---I felt sick. And I think that's why it worked for me. It is a miserable experience but a great film.
