Prince of Persia + Leap Year > Tokyo Story...Wow

Hah, I also saw Fellini's La Dolce Vita recently and that movie also got a lower score than PoP and LY. :lol That was another movie based on a very simple premise that took far too long to make its point (shallow man cannot escape his shallow life). La Strada and Le notti di Cabiria are far better movies.

Oh I definitely agree.

The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer
Amazing, intense thriller. Must-see.
Exactly that. Also, very interesting if you consider
most of it a dream. That much more eerie and unsettling.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia- Again. Twice in two weeks. Can't get enough of it.

the ghost writer ***

moody and gripping political thriller, which ratchets up the tension and sense of unease expertly over the length of the picture. ewan mcgregor is excellent as the nameless ghost writer who is charming blank slate, while tom wilkinson and pierce brosnan inject more colour into the cast. the story is fairly conventional and simple, with a few really dumb moments that irritate me, but its success is in how polanski tells it; his control of the film's atmosphere is superb, with some gorgeous cinematography in there, and great attention is paid tot he details in every scene, which all serves to totally sell you on the characters, place and events despite some patchiness in the script. the film lacks subtlety in its political agenda, which is fine in theory as i don't mind very political films, but i dislike how blatant the blair resemblance of the portrayed prime minister is given the steps into deep fiction it takes as the plot unfolds, even though it makes the later revelations quite comic for followers of uk politics. it concludes with a great last shot.

Ikiru - 8.5/10

For the first half-ish of the film, I felt like it was shaping up to be one of my absolute favorites. Unfortunately, though, I wasn't as engaged by the post-death discussion at Watanabe's wake as I was by watching him discover a real life again. While I completely understand the thematic purpose behind his colleagues and relatives all discussing his contribution to the world, I felt that it was much less enjoyable than actually seeing him in action. Every moment of the last third of the film mostly involved me anticipating the next flashback. That said, this is a very well thought-out script and while I didn't much enjoy said discussion, I understand the reason for it and I love the ideas that the film presents. Overall, I really enjoyed the film.

Just saw the classic Rear Window for the first time.

I enjoyed it a lot, and it does show a lot of Hitchcock's skill as a filmmaker. The pacing is perfect, and the meta-commentary on the audience of a film is awesome. The music in it is great. The sound direction in general lends to the overall feeling of being trapped. The sounds of the neighborhood kids or the busy night streets, heard but unseen, are fitting for the feeling of being a passive viewer.
The acting is great, and is another way of getting the audience to think about themselves. Stewarts cadence towards viewing these people lets us question our own curiosity and how it can also suck others in.
The only part of the film that I found strange was the climax. It should work, but it seemed strange to almost everyone I watched it with. I think the way it was filmed just hasn't aged well, while the rest of the direction is timeless.

Braindead+poster

Greatness! Greatness I say! I enjoyed this as much as Army of Darkness. The slapstick, the comedy, the violence, the insanely hot Diana Peñalver, the gore, the gore!

Instant classic!

I'm really starting to love the horror genre. It seems so shallow when looking from a distance but in reality the genre incorporates what makes films so great in the first place, entertainment.

I watched Monty Python's The Life of Brian for the first time a couple of days ago. I thought the movie had its moments (the ending, Romanus Eunt Domus, the man wanting to be a girl), but I definitely find The Holy Grail to be a far superior Monty Python film. Not only is it more consistently funny, but the jokes are funnier too.

OSS 117: Lost in Rio (w/ English subs) - 4/5

Ohhh the French :lol

Hilarious movie, with more of an Austin Powers influence than Connery-era Bond films. It's only held back by the shear amount of awkward racist jokes, which by the end get a tad tiresome. But aside from that it's excellent, the lead himself was a perfect choice and knows how to pull of the cocky yet charming spy. Highly recommend it if you're onto foreign comedies.

A Prophet - Amazing film. Absolutely refreshing in the fact that I had no idea how things would work out, or couldn't predict so. Some utterly intense sequences, and pretty surreal most of the time.

Why did I not care for this film? People that have seen it rave about it, but I thought it was okay, nothing great.

I was just impressed by a solid story with twists and turns that didn't feel contrived, that were always interesting and captivating. It was like a weird, fascinating look into one man's six years' time.

And it was the short bursts of GODDAMN that really showed you how tense it could get if it wanted to, but restrained itself for more effect.

Edit: However, once again advertising fucking destroys the full impact of films. The DVD menu has him
holding a gun, looking menacing
. Way to ruin some of the impact.

Is this a French film called Un Prophete? I watched over the weekend. It was in French but there were English subtitles.

Yes it is. And they switch frequently between Corsican and Arabic and French, unless I'm completely uncultured and Corsican is not a dialect. But I think it is.
Well, yeah, there were other languages. The problem is, after about an hour in, I stopped listening to any of the characters and just read the subtitles.

I felt like the movie went on too long, but that may be due to read subtitles all the time. I don't have a problem with long films as long as they're good.

IP Man - wow, what a great martials arts movie. Usually, for these types of movies, I just skip to the fight scenes. But not this one, the entire story kept my interest throughout.

Kick-Ass - lol, the fight scenes/choreography in this movie is better than some of the larger more well-known superhero movies out there.

Does anybody know more movies like Duel (1971) where the whole story talks about one person and most of the acting done by one actor?

Iron Monkey, by Yuen Woo-Ping.

Pretty terrible, really :lol

I don't know how a Shaolin King-Kong Palm to the chest can poison the blood - and can be cured by drawing out that blood and taking wacky folk medicine. Even in kung fu flicks, that is nonsensical.

Finally got around to seeing Blood Simple.

I've had it lying around for awhile, after buying a collection of some of the Coen Brothers' earlier movies. I don't know why, but I just kept putting it off, I guess subconsciously assuming that since it was the Coens' first movie that it wouldn't feel as polished and competent as their other stuff. I was wrong though. It was just as interesting and engaging as their later work.
Absolutely amazing. I did anticipate some things, like the entire film I'm wondering about
the third bullet
and kept waiting for it to come into play.
The burial
was brutal, and I appreciated that many parts of the movie went completely different than I would expect, especially with Ray. Every time I thought I understood his character, he went and did something that surprised me. Of course, Visser makes the movie, and the ending is absolutely great. I love the way that the Coens suddenly end their movies.
Great movie, and I'll never hear "It's the Same Old Song" the same way again. There are only two Coen movies left for me to see, Hudsucker Proxy and Intolerable Cruelty(Kind of dreading this one).

Hot Fuzz
I haven't seen it since it first came out on video, it never stuck with me like Shaun of the Dead. I'm glad I watched it again because it's probably an even better movie, so funny and the action packed, I loved it.
fuckingawesome/10

MacGruber
It came out on blu ray today. It had a few laughs, like the celery scene but overall it was nothing too memorable.

Saw Undisputed 3 , great movie I really really liked it. They nailed the 80's bloodsport formula. Take that modern action cinema. The Fight cinematography was fun and fantastic.

secret honor
evil dead 1/2
playtime
a lot of silent movies

You Don't Know Jack

Good film (felt really long for 2 hours though), great performance by Pacino, but I was feeling pretty uneasy throughout the whole thing. I couldn't get over how cavalier everyone was towards death.

One thing that confuses me in Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive).

Why is Nikita such a bitch when she first seas Lionel? In the store she first sees him drop some fruit sure, but the whole time she's such a bitch to him until she sees the "sign". What's up with that because it totally doesn't fit her character? Was she just really anxious to get back into the tarot card reading?

This whole post is like post-modern performance art.

I'm thinking more like Cast Away and I Am Legend.
Everytime I think of movies comparable to Duel, I think Terminator although there are two people (I am Legend had 2 as well). I know it doesn't quite fit the criteria

I watched part of a movie called Jesus's Son. It's about a guy who takes drugs and goes on downward spiral and all the usual shit. It sucked. Billy Crudup's performance walked a fine line between eccentric and mildly retarded. Jack Black was kind of amusing in his brief part but after that I couldn't take it anymore and ejected the disc.

Next I have Cold Souls with the guy from Fred Claus. Sounds like a cool movie.

Mic-Macs.

Loved it. A much more restrained piece of work than the trailers suggested.

I am deeply in love with Marie Julie Baup - or 'Calculette' :lol

Watching all of my James Bond blu-rays. I hope they release the rest on BD some day.

Might go to the theater today and see the new RE movie.
