Fog of War is most excellent.

Also am I alone in not liking early Coen bros movies like Barton Fink, Hudsucker Proxy, Raising Arizona(except Millers Crossing, love that movie)? Barton Fink I've watched twice now and still don't get what it's about lol.

Yes I hated that movie. Got a very similar vibe.

You should just read that Scrooge McDuck comic and mix it with Last Year at Marienbad to get the general idea of it even though both of those are better than Inception.

I watched Submarine in my little time off from working on set and working at my job. It owes more to Godard than Wes Anderson after watching it and could have been one of my favorite films of the year if he could have kept up its frantic storytelling throughout the feature. He shows a lot of his influences and I really think that IT Crowd guy could become one of the great British comedy directors of the modern era and especially with his influences: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sub...films_with_submarine_director_richard_ayoade/

Anyone else interested in that remake/homage to SLACKER?

I started a thread yesterday, but no one seemed to care.

Surely, someone here likes the original enough to be offended or curious.

A lot of the people I am working on set with worked on that remake/homage and truthfully, it sounds pretty cool. It is done by just Austin filmmakers and sounds like a wonderful homage.

Wait, Jane Eyre is good?

The film could have been great if they kept up with the tone that was set in the first 30 minutes but it is a decent rental at least. Why am I so obsessed with initial establishments of films is beyond me.

Also, I drank a lot tonight and talked to the production manager for a while about Synechdoche New York and he keeps on telling me that we are going to do a rewatch of the film and then we are going to have a discussion of the film afterwards. God damn it. In my future I will have to revisit that ass taint again.

I love Hulu plus. I've been going through Kurosawa's older films I haven't seen (mostly his very early movies). After that I am watching Ozu. I've only seen Tokyo Story.

I really need to get Hulu Plus. I will wait for maybe 2 more months so more catalog titles come on and then just go crazy. It feels crazy that Tokyo Story has always been known as one of the all time greats but just recently after Criterion released Make Way for Tomorrow that it has lost a lot of steam. I really need to watch Make Way for Tomorrow by the way. I am pretty weak on Ozu and have watched Tokyo Story and Good Morning.

Watched Rat Race for the first time. Brilliant comedy. Rowan Atkinson and John Cleese are both just incredibly magnificent actors.

loved it

4 posts in a row AlternativeUlster, really?

I watched The Invention of Lying yesterday since I was in the mood for some Ricky Gervais. It actually started out really well and I found it really funny, but after a while the film just gets ridiculous and downright awful story-wise. I only liked Ricky Gervais in his comedic moments, and there were a lot of actors in it that I like (Louis C.K., Jeffrey Tambor, Rob Lowe, Tina Fey & Jason Bateman). They couldn't save the film though. 5/10 I'm gonna give Ghost Town a shot soon.

This movie really dumbfounded me. I can't believe Ricky Gervais wrote this. Its premise doesn't seem thought out at all and there are so many things just wrong and disturbing in this world. Jennifer Garner is a completely unlikeable character. Ghost Town is better than this but still, why is Gervais' making these movies? He sure talks alot of doing comedy that no one else is doing and having certain standards but then he makes this?

Just watched Lens Flare Trek last night on netflix at 2am while feeding my newborn a bottle. Should've just went back to bed when she finished.

2 huge plot holes that made me angry:

Ah the one that annoyed me and pretty much makes the whole premise for the movie idiotic was
the whole movie is based on the fact that Spock couldn't fly his slow ass to that star fast enough to inject the red matter. Later in the movie they establish that you can use a transporter to teleport something pretty much anywhere. So why didn't Spock just use a transporter to send red matter to the star to begin with?

I see, so i should like Inception.

Depends on if you notice something about the ending that makes it fall apart or not. If you don't notice it the ending will actually be good. If you do notice it prepare to be disappointed.

i just watched a bunch of movies from last winter. I'm gonna rank 'em.

1-True Grit - I loved nearly everything about this one.
2-The King's Speech - As much as I tend to dislike biopics, I really enjoyed this film.
3-Never Let Me Go - This one was a big surprise. I really enjoyed the themes presented in it, though I felt it may have moved at too brisk of a pace.
4-The Black Swan - Good, but not great.
5-127 Hours - Another biopic. I assumed it was going to end the way it did, naturally, as they wouldn't be making a movie about this story if it had ended the other way. I found it enjoyable, nonetheless.
6-Conviction - Yet another biopic. I feel the same way about it that I felt about 127 hours, though I thought it was a lot less interesting.

With the exception of Conviction, I'd recommend them all.

Coming today: Blue Valentine and The Kids Are Alright.

Reign Over Me

It was great. Yes, that's Adam Sandler. Yes, it was still great.

Might be the first Adam Sandler film I've enjoyed.

And the way they used Shadow of the Colossus in the movie... brilliant stuff.

9/10

Very good picks, except for conviction which I also did not like. I would probably tie The Kings Speech and True Grit, but besides that you are spot on.

Blue Valentine and The Kids are Alright seem like a strangely appropriate double feature.

I wouldn't rate it THAT high but it did surprise me and was the first movie that actually incorporated a video game as true symbolism and not as a goddamn prop. I wish more people would give it a shot, even if Sandler's in it. It's very different from his other work, including Punchdrunk Love and Spanglish.

It's because you waited 20 minutes... just saying. You figure out why the things that are happening, happen. To be fair everybody dreams different or experiences different things in dreams. While I wasn't a huge fan of what Nolan did with the dream world, he still explains the rules of it and how it works. There are plenty of movies that take longer to get going and catch you up to speed.

Some movies take longer to get going, no doubt, but at least you usually start to care about the characters by then or at least feel immersed. Here there is nothing. It was as if it wasn't necessary to establish any connection to the characters because it's Leonardo DiCaprio, and we all know him. And the Japanese guy with the bad Jet-Li English accent got on my nerves.

Too bad, I was in the mood for an out of the ordinary movie.

Guess i'll notice it now, :P.
Anyway, it's not high on my list, i still have a lot of other films to get first, so i don't know when i'll be able to see it.

Ah, when i went to see The Tree of Life, there was a dude (we were like 5 people in the room) in the line in front of me, who was texting with his phone, during the whole Universe creation part there was this "du-dun" MSN does, when someone writes something.
So in the interval, another man asked him if he could text his friends later, but he said he was "reviewing the movie and taking notes" (wth?).
It was lol worthy though, and the screening was shitty anyway.

I actually enjoyed Antichrist. It gets better/worse

it was a very atmospheric and moody piece, and the performances were terrific (you know, i've always admired dafoe). i enjoyed it, but i didn't think it was great or anything.

it was just so shocking to out of nowhere see a penis slide into a vagina in a rather beautiful way, you know?

Watched Melancholia earlier this week and Black Swan tonight. They're both quite something. I thought the latter would just be a lesbian dance film, but it turned out to be the darker of the two!

How the hell did you see Melancholia? Lucky bastard!

But it's in your face right from the start. We all dream, we are all familiar with dreams, yet the movie doesn't even attempt at using what we all personally feel or know about dreams to carry its story forward. It just goes "Ha! Dreams are confusing so anything goes!".

And the movie doesn't draw you in at all. It keeps cutting non-stop from one short scene to another. I don't care about any of the characters. I don't know what they want to do. Etc.

20 minutes is should be enough to be draw into a movie. I was not drawn in one bit.

They aren't facts. They're movie facts. They're telling you this so when shit happens in the dreams the viewer doesn't go "what? no one told me you could do that." Its a bit tedious but really not as bad as you're making it out to be.

The movie has bigger flaws than made up rules for dreams.

I think it premiered last month in theaters around the country (Denmark).

Ah, I see it did. Lucky! We have to wait until November in the US. I'll probably get an import DVD/screener before I even see it in theaters like I did with Antichrist...unless it is likely at TIFF.

A friend of mine seen it too, a few weeks ago, in Milan (i guess).
Said it's amazing (though he is a Von Trier fan).

The Crazies (2010) was excellent. It shared a lot of thematic ground with The Mist, but it was better than that film.
Oh shit, i thought it was just another random horror/remake, and i removed it from my amazon wishlist.. i guess i'll put it back in.

The premises are similar but Inception is a far more ordinary film than Paprika.
Uhm, a friend told me there's a lot of action and shooting in it.
I have other priorities right now, but i'll get it anyhow, sooner or later, sounds like a fun ride and Nolan is good at action movies, i think.

I do believe that several other Gaffers have also been pretty high on the movie. Definitely give it a go.

It was a fantastic film. Not a big Trier fan myself but I see why it was nominated at Cannes.

Damn, how did this bomb so hard. It didn't even make $1m at the box office. I really liked it, one of my favorites by Ang Lee.

Yeah, I saw it in theaters opening day and thought it was super entertaining.

Nice, my reviewer from Cannes went crazy over it. Said it is by far his #1 film of the year.

Watched Drive Angry today.

It was... interesting. I get that they were going for that B-Grade action/fiction look, but sometimes it was just really jarring seeing green screen fire instead of CG fire.

Just watched Black Swan.

Great movie, Portman was great.
Glad the ending wasn't her actually having killed the other girl. I didn't mind the visual effects either to illustrate her mental state.

Only thing that felt a bit wrong with the movie was how fast it moved forward. It seemed like outside of practicing and being in her bedroom, she had absolutely no life at all, which felt rather not quite believable. If it was supposed to show her disconnect with social life then you'd think we would have been a bit more exposed to this aspect but it doesn't seem quite believable for such a well-dressed and prettied up ballet dancer to be a complete loner who never goes out of her except to practice.

Watched Love Exposure the other night.
Fantastic pacing for a 4-hour long movie. Possibly a masterpiece. One of my new favorite films now.
Followed it up with Suicide Club, which was good, and just watched Noriko's Dinner Table, which was amazing.

The cut on the criterion blu-ray isnt the same as the original release fyi, though it really wouldnt have changed anything back then

hanna - quick, efficient movie w/ nice action without the usual dizzying quick cuts, good soundtrack by the chemical brothers, and well acted throughout. 3.5/5

kick ass - deviated quite a bit from the comic to fit a few hollywood cliches and degraded into some stupid nonsense at the end, but pretty fun for most of the movie. 2/5

super 8 - great jj abrams touches with some spielbergian feeling, excellent score, great acting, and some cloverfield and lost references for good measure. 4/5

The Crazies, plot-wise, is just okay. I thought the cinematography and tone was exceptional.

Caught this a day ago. It was very different from what I expected. Instead of being a buddy hick comedy with some horror elements, it's actually a clever twist on a slasher flick. Though it really fizzles out in the end I would still highly recommend it.

Just watched Source Code. I liked the premise and enjoyed the movie, but taking the train that Gyllenhall's character is supposedly taking almost everyday for the last two years threw me off.

I know it's a nitpick, and I'm sure they do this in movies all the time, but they claim he's coming from Glenbrook(a north suburb of Chicago) in most of the scenes, but they continually show aerials views and buildings from the south suburbs.

The red building building that's near the train when it blows up is literally across the expressway from US Cellular Field, which is on the southside, and home of the White Sox(a southside pride team). They show an aerial shot of the stadium too. It took me completely out of the movie when they kept showing the Glenbrook station, but southside everything else.

Besides this I really dug it, and enjoyed the "scifi-y elements" to the movie too.

4/5.

Inside - Jesus, this has to be one of the bloodiest movies I've ever seen. Only about a half-dozen or so people die, but there's a disconcerting amount of arterial spray accompanying the deaths of each one. Kind of a baby anxiety movie and a slasher rolled into one. I liked it, although there's this melancholy center of it (the baby movie) which doesn't quite fit with the "tone" of the slasher - so the ridiculously OTT amounts of blood alternately undermine and support what it is going for. A few too many distracting CGI baby shots, too. But it did feel like a suitably dark and uncompromising take on that particular subgenre.

I wasn't sure if they were going to go for the ending they threatened to go with, but...yup.
I liked it, on par with Martyrs for me ( i should rewatch Martyrs to be sure, though).
Better than High tension and Frontiers anyway.
I love the lights/shadows work in the movie, some are very beautiful and clever.
I think it has a bit too many plot devices at the end (
with the retarded cops
), but overall it's very good, imo.
Still think that Mum&Dad is creepier, but i don't know if they're the same genre.
Next i have to watch 7 days, Neighbour n°13 and 5150 elm's way.
