Mean Streets

You too good for this ten dollars? It's a good ten dollars. You know Michael, you make me laugh. You see, I borrow money all over this neighborhood, left and right from everybody, I never pay them back. So, I can't borrow no money from nobody no more, right? So who would that leave me to borrow money from but you? I borrow money from you, because you're the only jerk-off around here who I can borrow money from without payin' back, right? You know, 'cause that's what you are, that's what I think of you: a jerk-off. You're a fucking jerk-off! You're laughing 'cause you're a jerk-off. I'll tell 'ya something else, I fuck you right where you breathe, because I don't give two shits about you or nobody else.

Kind of a boring movie but worth watching for De Niro and Keitel and the Scorsese visual style.

Well my new years resolution was to buy atleast 1 movie everyweek for the whole year. So far i've bought 14 films :)

The ones I've watch so far

Battle Royle - was okay kinda let down a bit because my friend over hyped me for it

I'm not scared- love this movie. you've got to go in fresh with this one the least you know the better. But defiantly a well shoot good thriller would be absolutely beautiful in HD. I watched it being upconverted to 1080i really gorgeous

Daft Punk's Electroma- Cool film all silent

Fantastic Planet half way through this. The soundtrack is by far the best thing about it

On the WaterFront Fantastic movie, absolutely love it. Got some good .gif potential aswell

Pretty Woman. I was just forced into watching this on ABC and enjoyed it, having forgotten everything about the plot. The ending was a bit contrived though... ex-hooker turns down billionaire love of her life's offer to stay with him so she can go back to... working part-time and finishing highschool. Oh wait, it was all to set up a sappy ending.

Eyes Wide Shut

Despite what some detractors may say, I absolutely love this film. Granted it’s an intangible quality I can’t quite put my finger on but I’m fascinated by the seedy undercurrent running through the whole film. I also quite like the stylish, over-blown lighting and the way it was photographed.

Heights Another urban film dealing with six degrees of separation set-up. Surprisingly pretty good I thought, with James Marsden in particular impressing me. Certainly worth a watch.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children I've never played a Final Fantasy game and don't particulary plan to. So the story was a bit pie in the sky but the animation was pretty impressive I have to say.

Trade Pretty darn good movie. Some chunks of the story fit a little to well together but it was an extremely enjoyable movie in the end.

Retribution by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

I would only recommend this if you haven't seen another film by Kurosawa called Cure. Structurally they're almost identical, and I can't understand why Kurosawa was content with just ripping himself off. It could've been a lot better, but for what is basically an old-fashioned ghost story, it's still above average.

If you hate how almost every suspense movie uses jump scares to get you, watch this. Kurosawa handles suspense differently than most directors. He puts the viewer in the seat of the characters being haunted and leaves you there to soak up the dread.

Akira kurosawas "dreams" 1st time watching it. Actually I am watching right now and just got done with the 1st one. :D

I think he might be better in short form. His movies ( mostly the samurai flicks) are pretty long and slow paced. Doesn't wear you out in chunks. Has he made any other shorts? I have mostly seen the samurai stuff. I think my favorite may be redberd. Not really a samuri flick (more like a precursor to house) but its set in that era.

I was really liking the 1st one but I was a bit disapponted at the climax. I think he intended the last shot to be flat, shot with a long lens, but the overall composition was just strange. I also wanted the spirits to kick some ass. They got all pissed then they twirled around. I was hyped for a sweet peach blossom tornado but due to the length of the lens flattening the picture all I saw was what looked like bad fake snow.

Oh shit! Blizzard! Now this is what I am talking about :)

TBC...

Pierrot Le Fou - Utter madness, but I love it.

La Petit LiLi -Ludivine Sagnier amazes me yet again. And on a totally shallow level, I pity anyone who hasn't seen her naked.

Who' Afraid of Virginia Woolfe - electric

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie - Everything I've loved about every film I've ever loved all in one neat package. Stuff like this is why I've never done a drug in my life.

Darker than Black - I enjoyed the hell out of this. Thank GAF Anime.

Gone Baby Gone

Was surprised how solid Affleck's directorial debut was. It's a tale that get's darker as the story progresses and ends on a somewhat ambiguous note, which was a welcome change particularly for a story like this. Special mention to Casey Affleck (Whom I’ve really only seen in the Ocean films) who gives an under-stated but firm performance.

Into the Wild - This may be my second favorite movie ever. It was really incredible. My only beef was that the dad reminded me of (only read these if you want to ruin the movie a little)
Will Farrell's "I drive a Dodge Stratus!" character
and the mom reminded me of
Stewart's mom on MadTV
. I know they were suppose to be people who put on a good face/are fake but I think the acting went a bit far to being kinda goofy. All the other characters were brilliant.

Futurama: Bender's Big Score - Pretty good, standard level of Futurama humor. The scammer guys were a little too nasty and also stupid character ideas. I know that's the point, but I'd prefer a less nasty and just as funny idea, even if that means changing the entire concept of the movie.

Family Guy: Blue Harvest - Really hilarious. My only complaint is a musical number. I hate most musicals, and when in cartoon form they are even worse, coming off as one of those geeky ass anime music videos. It gets not even a hint of a laugh from me. My first response is "ugh" but then proceeding to go through an entire song makes me go "UUUUUUUGGGGHHHHH SUCH CRAPPP" this also goes for the little number that was in the Futurama movie but not as bad.

Nipple in #932, woo

Anyway, I watched parts of "Bloodmonkey" because F Murray Abraham was in it, but good lord. He must've needed a quick payday to accept a role in shit like that.

Orinarily, I hate movies like this. This one was better than I expected though. And Julie Gayet is a goddess.

Retribution by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

I was so tremendously disappointed with this, especially since it took me so long to get ahold of a copy. How someone can go from such a tremendous string of films to this sort of banal material is beyond me... I'm not sure I even want to bother tracking down Loft (the movie prior to Retribution) now.

Lawrence of Arabia Great cinematography, but even though I really liked it as I was watching it, afterwards I thought it was a very small film for what was filmed as a grand epic. That's bad because you miss the minor character changes that drive smaller films in the vast desert panorama. It's hard to see Lawrence's growing (and historically inaccurate) egoism or the motivation behind his re-acceptance of his role after trying to resign. O'Toole also seems a little heavy-handed and presentational, which is understandable for the time, but rings false today.

i loved lawrence of arabia, but i agree that it could have been a much smaller film and been just as effective outside a few shots that today could be filled in during post-production

I absolutely adored this film as a kid and I think certainly at the time didn't realize or understand how many of the gags were done. For a film done more just about 20 years ago, colour me impressed it's still amazing to watch.

I remember being truly scared as a small boy with Judge Doom particularly right at the end.
I love that movie. "Color me impressed", lol.. :lol

I knew who Judge Doom was before I knew who Doc Brown was.

I've read that Loft is supposed to be the low point of his career, so I haven't put much effort into tracking it down either. I've actually been disappointed with Japanese cinema as a whole for the last year or two. Takeshi Kitano and Shinya Tsukamoto's last respective films were fucking terrible considering their pedigree. And Kiyoshi Kurosawa was quickly becoming one of my favourite directors at one point (Cure, Pulse, Bright Future) but ever since Doppelganger, it seems he's been completely incapable of finishing the final acts of his films.

Just saw Eastern Promises last night. Not bad, though I probably could have done without seeing Viggo Mortensen naked.

lol, its funny because I so-did not expect a fight scene to happen there.

Seriously think about how amazing that scene was made... it must have been hard to do the shit he did naked. remember that viggo is over 50 now. he is pretty damn tough looking for a guy at that age. holy shit.

the blood and gore is pretty sick. epic croneberg. when he fucks them up it really stings like few other movie deaths do... it really makes me "oh shit, that gotta hurt".

i was very impressed by that scene. i really didnt have a problem with it. kudos for viggo for having the bravery to do it.

IMO it was totally oscar worthy, even though I havent seen There will be blood yet...

Good Night and Good Luck

I forgot how fantastic this film is. It plays out just beautifully and the way the film is shot and lit makes me long for more black and white films, there's just a timeless quality about it. David Strathairn gives an amazing performance as Murrow and the way he waxes lyrical and the vernacular he uses, is just music to my ears.

Battle Royale An interesting concept and idea punctuated by one or two interesting scenes (See the lighthouse) that ultimately fails to capitalise on the theme. The constant need for every class-mate to have a supposed crush on one another quickly grows old along with lines like “you are the coolest girl in the world” uttered by a dying teenager, makes for a pretty cringe worthy experience.

Black Book

(Carice is stunning!)

Tracked this down after the recommendation in this thread. I really, really, enjoyed this, not overly patriotic as many other films in the ww2 genre and provides a different perspective on the resistance.

Sky High

I can't honestly believe Ryuhei Kitamura spearheaded this pos. It was so fucking ridiculous we're better off pretending it doesn't exist. Forget you ever read this.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Like my 4th time seeing this movie. I absolutely love it .. one of my all time favorites. So well crafted and original. I feel like I can relate to Joel's character so much. "Why do I fall in love with every woman who shows me the slightest bit of attention?" If only I could find my Clementine. :(

glad you shared my criticisms. i'd heard so many good things, but i suppose i expected to be able to take it seriously, which was a big mistake. i thought it was a big piece of shit.

I just saw The Dreamers on IFC last night. Oh man, Eva Green, full-frontal... wow! Some other stuff happened and there were a couple of penises getting a lot of screen time, but there was also a lot of Eva Green full-frontal. So to summarize the movie had a plot and a setting somewhere and some stuff might have happened and then Eva Green full frontal nudity.

5/5

was it actually a good movie? seriously, i'm curious--i've heard it's pretty excellent, and though i think she's absolutely stunning and fell in love with her no less than five times during casino royale, i'm not going to watch a movie just to see her naked

I thought Dreamers was awful.. so pretentious. I can't even remember anything about the movie other than a bunch of weird sex scenes that included incest.

It wasn't great, but I liked it well enough. I'm not really sure I can give my objective opinion, because seeing every inch of Eva Green may have blinded me from seeing the movie as being bad. It didn't seem bad, but I can't tell if I was watching it because I was interested or because I was going to see some more Eva Green.

Anyway, I kept getting Wuthering Heights (the novel) vibes. It was about her and her twin brother befriending an American student (movie was set in France during Vietnam) that shared the same interests. The twins see themselves as two halves of the same person (I think they used to be Siamese twins... they have similar marks on each shoulder, but I'm not sure if the brother said this jokingly or not) and their new friend comes to realize they are very (unhealthily) close.

So it's about the three of them living communally in the twin's parent's (I didn't catch why the parents are gone for so long) swank apartment/townhome and slowly receding away from the outside world (and the riots of 1968 France) as their new American friend is accepted as a third wheel, in love with the twins.

I don't recall seeing any incestuous sex scenes. Incest was implied but not actually shown in any sex scenes.

Bu-bu-bu-but did you not read the part about Eva Green showing us the goods? The Wuthering Heights thing is just in Isabelle's (Eva Green) pathetic [psychotic] dependence on her brother.

Guess my memory is a little hazy but you have to admit
the sister asking the brother to jerk off in front of her was a little creepy

But when your sister is Eva Green.. uh nevermind

Yep. That was my first wtf moment. Before that
he'd seen them lying in bed naked together,
but you can rationalize that away. However, you just can't explain away the weirdness of
a sister making a brother wack-off in front of her
.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with the book, pretty much more of the same and banal writing. While the poor writing might be the translator's fault, I suspect it's not.

300 Visually powerful, but I really hope virtual sets don't become mainstream. While the look is neat, it'd get old quickly. Some of the modern vernacular that works its way in to the dialogue feels oddly placed.

I find that people who have more of an appreciation for classic cinema -- anywhere from the era of Tod Browning's Freaks to French New Wave -- end up enjoying The Dreamers more. A lot of the film is basically an homage to the good old days.

Cloverfield, incredibly stupid plot and the ending left much to be desired. I will commend Abrams on trying to be original with the 1st person camera work (it was REALLY awesome in the subway scene) but still, the monster's CG looked kinda crappy and there was just too many unrealistic stupid decisions made by the characters that it came off as laughable instead of something that could potentially happen

First Ferrara film I've seen and I've got to admit I quite enjoyed it. Walken as always fills the screen with his quirky but unusual antics and Fishburne (Going by the first name Larry in the credits) is refreshingly over the top in this film. It's a really unusual film in terms of how the script plays out and juggles the characters. It ends on a somewhat surprisingly low-key moment.

Right, as I said a lot of interesting ideas but just poorly executed overall. I guess deep-down I was hoping for a Lord in the Flies type situation.

No Country For Old Men

Loved it. A really well made film that demands a lot from the viewer but is much better for it. I loved the ending.

Also, Javier Bardem = Awesome-sauce

The Squid and the Whale

What a fantastic little film! I went in with little or no expectations only knowing Noah Baumbach was somehow involved and walked away pleasantly surprised. Latter I learned Bill Murphy originally planned on playing Bernard, but the truth of the matter is Jeff Daniels is so perfect through the role; it seems like an effortless performance. In fact the performances through the board are great, particularly by the kids and Laura Linney who doesn't have oodles of screen time but must juggle the tough job of inducing sympathy but also some ill feelings by the audience. Special mention to William Baldwin for his small cameo (Which had my laughing every time he repeated his mantra-like phrase). Highly recommended stuff.

Munich
photo_02_hires.jpg

First time I've seen this since its theatrical release. Amazing moving piece with a stand-out performance by Eric Banna. It's not the easiest film to watch, just the way the script slowly progresses and the story plays out. Technically is Spielberg at his best apart from one or two ugly transitions. If there's one quibble I had
I absolutely hated how he inter-cut the sex scene with the bloody finale of the failed Munich attack

i did the whole hdmod thing and watched the bourne identity tonight. i think i'll have to check out ultimatum and supremacy in the next few days.

Hi, Mom! After watching some older De Palma films like Blow Out & Body Double I tracked this down. First I must say it's a pretty weird viewing experience. The film's synopsis of a Vietnam vet John (Played by DeNiro) who gets involved in the pornography business couldn't really be further from the film's essence. It’s incredibly ahead in its time in a lot of respects with the “Be Black Baby” segments being wildly funny and dark at the same time.

Boiler Room Saw this today, it's decent without being exceptional.
