arstechnica.com has an interesting article on the current costs of the PS3 and the Xbox360.

We all know that a new console profit will be in the negative but how much is always a guess, especially before the product is even released. Now that the PS3 is released a better understanding of just how much in the red Sony is from it’s two versions of the PS3. The article also ends with mentioning that the 360 is in the black already!

PS3
The $599 version costs Sony $241.35 per unit.
The $499 version costs Sony $306.85 per unit.
Note: This means manufacturing costs are more than the retail price of the unit.

Xbox360
The $399 version makes Microsoft $75.70 per unit.
Nothing was mentioned of the $299 unit.
Note:This means that the cost of manufacturing is cheaper than the retail price of the unit.
