My white Manager says my ringtone makes him uncomfortable

Offensive? No. Obnoxious? Yes.

Then again I laugh at pretty much anybody that has ringtones anymore. Most people just leave their phones on vibrate at all times.

Not sure how they could make you change it though unless there is some kind of hr rule about it.

Lol, it's the same OP as the white snitch thread.

For those who haven't seen the post history: OP is an unprofessional employee who continuously seeks validation for his actions on a Videogame forum.

Is this the dude that works in a mostly black office where they blast hip-hop music all day driving their white boss crazy? I loved that thread lol

From the other thread, OP works in sales in some weird office where they play music and talk sports all day, and now (from this thread) they also take work calls on their cell phones while at work?

OP maybe your manager is uncomfortable because he comes from a workplace like 99% of office jobs (yes, even other sales jobs) where this is akin to Bizarro world. It just seems like your workplace is loud and chaotic. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable working in an environment like that.

Ah, I remember now. The circumstances that dictated the thread creation had a suspiciously positive outcome for the OP so he could crow about it towards the later pages. Just like this, in fact:

Actually the snitch got fired for stealing a few weeks ago.

Maybe he should change his ringtone to this.

people who havent worked in an office: omg what a dick manager
people who have worked in a professional enviroment: change your ringtone moron

This is the damn truth. Girl I work with has a song as her ringtone too. I now fucking hate that song. It's so obnoxious, just put it on vibrate, or turn it off, I don't want to listen to that shit all day long when your unemployed boyfriend gets bored and calls you.

I think I need more information before I can give you meaningful advice. 10 questions:

1) What was your former ringtone?

2) What are examples of your coworkers ringtones?

3) Are any of your coworkers uncomfortable?

4) Did you have to sign a contract for your job?

5) Are you expendable?

6) Do you care if you get a write up?

7) Is humor part of your office culture?

8) Do you work in an environment where customers are around and can hear your phone?

9) Do you have a skill or skillset that you could use to create your own business where you get to write the rules?

10) Have you had any other issues with the manager before?

/thread

I get annoyed when I can hear someone's phone vibrating on their desk all day, having a song for a ringtone is out of the question in an office.

Everything looks like a sitcom episode, including this thread. lmao

th

... with ringtones?

As others have said, put your phone on vibrate anyways. It's not professional to have your phone blasting a song.

But I still would have loved to hear the conversation.

"uh Steve, how's it going"

"it's going good boss"

"fantastic, how swell. Listen Steve, you know I am a fan of the fellow human beings and know I don't see people as ethnicities"

"... "

" but Steven, stevearino, some of the guys on here are feeling uncomfortable. How would you feel if I played some Taylor swift? I'm not singing about my skin color, not that it matters because I see no race as I told you"

"uuuuuh huh"

"coolio Steven, glad we could come to an agreement"

I agree with a previous poster that you should do more. This would be amazing if it was performed.😜

Right. And the smartphone era was the end of that.

People started buying iPhones and suddenly had better things to do on their device than pay 1.99 for a clip from some dumb song or a quote from an awful movie.

orrrr you buy an Android phone and drag and drop an mp3 to your phone.

's what I did

better than hearing the same god damn default iphone ringer that I hear 20 times a day from 20 different people. :P

I was expecting an rap song that would make somebody uncomfortable, lol how does that make him uncomfortable is beyond me

Im at a job where we require the use of our cell phones. Everyone has their own ringtone. I recently changed mine to this.

My manager pulled me aside and said that it makes him uncomfortable and to have to change it or risk a write up.

Gaf what are your thoughts? Is my ringtone offensive? Should I fight or comply?

Remember - private businesses can make any rule they want (within the realm of sanity of course) and your 1st amendment rights are not protected at your place of employment.

Your manager is a dick. If he writes you up for this go to HR.

The ringtone is annoying and unprofessional enough that OP maybe should not do that.

That's not to say there's actually anything wrong with it, but nobody likes hearing songs they dislike as other people's ringtones, it makes them uncomfortable.

I'm the latter in terms of work and I think this is purely a white guy being uncomfortable.

Using that as a ringtone is a tad unprofessional, actually.

Probably just annoying.

I can just imagine people trying to talk about a problem or something and then that ringtone comes on and it coming on multiple times during the day. Would get annoying.

Isn't it just common courtesy to not have a ringtone at all other than vibrate in an office environment? If people are hearing it, its obviously on fairly loud. Idk I don't see anything wrong with your boss requesting you change it. Custom ringtones are more often than not obnoxious and distracting. My cousin almost ALWAYS has something on there that drives me insane after hearing it a handful of times.

I personally would never use a ringtone like that in any setting, let alone the office. It draws far too much attention. Hearing that in an office environment just screams unprofessional, lyrics aside. OP's manager had a terrible approach though. This could have been remedied easily without the threat.
