My white Manager says my ringtone makes him uncomfortable

I do not think it has anything to do with your manager being white.
It is unprofessional.
If I blasted Die Die Die My Darling or even White and Nerdy I would get the same response from my manager.

Why is that your WORK ring tone?! Maybe a better question, why do you still have a ring tone in 2016? They're not acceptable at all, especially one with words/lyrics - that's just childish, short ring noise at MOST. I would feel uncomfortable around that, going from *quiet office environment*, to that blaring out of shitty phone speakers.

This only becomes raciest when other people have similar obnoxious songs set as their ringtones, and yours is the one that they frown upon.

Offensive? Not really.

Inappropriate for the workplace? Definitely.

This is pretty much where I stand. When you work for a business you represent the company and sadly even if its not offensive, people can use it to form a negative impression of the business which would be enough to get management to act.

It's not offensive, and it would probably be really funny to hear this the first time, but anytime after that and it would just be annoying. Also lol @ ringtones in 2016. Best to just go on vibrate bruh.

Couple instrumentals, Taylor Swifts bad Blood which I fine annoying as fuck persobally. And I think someone has the G.I. Joe theme song.

I mean if I were that manager I wouldn't be operating on a case by case basis like he is doing. Seems like an unnecessary headache and if you are a customer facing business, bad form.

Make a single policy on ringtones at work, think it through and be consistent with reasonable exceptions. Otherwise, you get shit like this.

Depending on the job, my default is always vibrate only, silenced in meetings.

did ringtones go out of style in 2016?

I'm the latter in terms of work and I think this is purely a white guy being uncomfortable.

I'm a brown guy and I can tell you if any of my co workers had that as their ring tone, I would be super uncomfortable and probably tell them in a friendly manner to change it.

If that is the case, I truly question what that manager is doing? That should be a strict vibrate/silence only work policy.

Yeah everyone should have their phones on vibrate. It's kinda shitty if this manager was okay with everyone else having ringtones but that ringtone is the one that makes him feel "uncomfortable".

Is it offensive? No.

Is it something that fits a professional workspace? No, it'd be the same as me blasting White and Nerdy as a ringtone at the workspace. I'd bet that my manager comes down and asks me to change it as well.

Put your phone on vibrate or pick a neutral ringtone when you're at work.
It offends white people when you're proud to be black.
If I swap two specific words in this sentence it still works. But let's not put all X people in one corner shall we?

terrible argument.

Pretty much any ringtone is unprofessional in a work setting. Set your phone to vibrate, mate. Nobody wants to hear sounds coming out of a shitty speaker in your pocket.

So was the blanket statement that he was responding too. It really added nothing of import to the discussion IMO. Just a quick jab at white people because I guess why not.

Honestly common sense use of the Golden Rule solves pretty much every work related problem.

Taylor Swift ringtone annoys you? Maybe your ringtone is gonna annoy others as well.

Guy who microwaves fish in the office makes you want to gag? Maybe don't microwave popcorn afterwards.

not really if the phrase all lives matter exists.

Can somebody follow OP's older thread tell me exactly what his job is in what kind of office? The place he work sound like a warehouse or garage more than an office.

So since a shitty phrase exists, that justifies drive-by posting in every thread that deals with a black and white person with some blanket assumption that this is some white supremacy power play?

Come on, pick better battles. It was a silly post and a poor attempt at a rebuttal. Lets just leave it at that.

Yeah that's the reason. Clearly.

It blows my mind how idiotic some people are on this forum with regards to workplace matters.

Probably a chunk of them don't have jobs. Kids or students.

Song isn't offensive but is Inappriorate for work regardless of who is black or white. Boss is right and op is wrong. Just read that other thread by the op too....

Fragility is a hell of a thing, and not worth losing your job over.

I was originally going to tell you to check if it's against the rules, and if not, tell him to sit and spin, but I work in an office, and even though I'm only here for two hours when everyone else is, I still have to play "the game".

Choose another ringtone and move on with your life.

I'm not hung up on it being a "blanket assumption" about every white person that has ever lived ever. We have concepts like white fragility to explain this sort of phenomenon but imma stop right there because I'm not gonna get caught up defending someone else's post and dragging this thread off topic. PM me or make a thread if you wanna have a separate discussion about this

And honestly, this is one reason why corporations end up becoming an environment people feel is so robotic and smothering haha.

100% correct.

Am I in favor of it? Nope. Would I ever let my ringtone choice and some asshole's hurt feelings jeopardize my job? Never. In fact, that's part of the reason I love my job so much. I work nights and have a lot of freedom.

I had no interest in having a separate discussion because this has nothing to do with any of that. Perhaps I should have made my purpose for butting in originally more clear.

It was a shit drive-by post and a bad rebuttal. Then three other people jumped on him/her for the rebuttal. It looked like a derail was in progress. Seemed wise to point out how the other statement was also shit tier. That it wasn't necessary to go to battle over.
