My white Manager says my ringtone makes him uncomfortable

Shouldn't use song ringtones at work anyways unless there's some kinda precedent or you have a very laid back environment.

CB4 is a pretty funny movie though and I'd chuckle if I heard the ringtone in public.

If you are in sales and you bring in the money, go for it. I tend to think the sales force should get some leeway when it comes to professional norms. Whatever motivates you to bring in the money is good.

Slapping butts makes me a better seller...get off my back man!

I would not be surprised if there is some douchbag out there that makes it rain so much money for a shithole of company that they don't mind putting some money aside for sexual harassment complaints just for him.

I wouldn't suggest any music ringtone for the workplace, but him specifically calling you out.....questionable. No doubt.

Yeah, I agree. Whatever the underlying reason, which could range from being relatively mundane or pretty fucked up, this is a policy that is just asking for problems. Especially if he does in fact work at a bank.

Wait.....OP works at a bank?

edit: Looking at his thread history, maybe he works for Enterprise Car Rentals.

So your ring tone is "I'm black y'all"? That's fucking hilarious. I don't see that as offensive, but you might want something more benign for work. I can see how that's not excatly work appropriate, despite being awesome. My ring tone is Showa King Ghidorah's cry, no issues there lol.

That's an awesome ringtone, but unprofessional. Either put it on vibrate or pick something bland.

That said, your boss stating that it makes him "uncomfortable", rather than that it's inappropriate, is suspect.

It matters because his white manager is telling him that a song that repeats "I'm Black Ya'll " makes them uncomfortable. Saying I'm black shouldn't make him uncomfortable and It is an example of white fragility.
I don't know, if someone had a ringtone blasting "I'm white yall" it would make me pretty uncomfortable. White fragility? I'd be uncomfortable about race being brought up in the workplace, period. Getting involved with a complaint or HR is the last thing I want.

In any other context, I wouldn't give a shit.

Did op ever respond to anything?

He did this same disappearing act in his other thread about his workplace when he was called out for clearly not understanding professional environments. When someone pointed out that he bailed out due to it being a rude awakening, he popped back in to say, "But im right here though? Or do you just like sounding ignorant?"

Also:

Ah, I remember now. The circumstances that dictated the thread creation had a suspiciously positive outcome for the OP so he could crow about it towards the later pages. Just like this (thread), in fact

So its hard to know if he is simply trolling or if he is completely oblivious how to act in a professional environment, no matter how "laid back" that environment may be. And if its the latter, he also seems to refuse to respond to any sort of criticism despite asking for GAF's thoughts. I'm curious how old the OP is and if this is his first job... he simply might not know what is generally acceptable in a professional workplace.

Basically, as many here seem to agree, this:

Offensive? Not really.

Inappropriate for the workplace? Definitely.

and this:

people who havent worked in an office: omg what a dick manager
people who have worked in a professional enviroment: change your ringtone moron

OP - it's entirely possible a co-worker complained about your ringtone. Some managers will take possession of complaints in these situations to avoid inadvertently pitting team members against each other.

It's literally a descriptor. I wouldn't care if it said white, fat,or cat. I don't see how that song could offensive. The Jamaican guy at my job who constantly plays homophobic music makes me uncomfortable. Race shouldn't be so taboo that you can't even describe it.

Someone else's asking why the manager being white mattered and that is what I came up with. I'm not saying that op should stand its ground or make a complaint or something like that because it really isn't worth the trouble. I would just change the to the metal Gear Solid ring and be done.

Nah im just hanging my head in shame as to how many of my threads backfire on me. I need to rethink my position on various stances in my life. I mean I have to be the problem if thats the recurring theme.

I'll be honest: as much as I disagree with your antics, most people don't take a step back like you just did. Bravo for that.

Or how about you just explain in detail what your job is, what sort of work environment you work in, etc?

Or just continue to give almost no details.

Have your phone on vibrate. Even though your boss is making a big deal out of nothing, hearing ring tones in a professional setting grates some people.

Record one for him of you singing "I'm white ya'll, I'm white ya'll, I'm whiter than white cause I'm white ya'll" so you can be ringtone bros.

In all seriousness, I consider it completely unoffensive but unprofessional. I changed to generic tones years ago after Roots Manuva started banging out of my phone one too many times while talking to clients.

The song is funny, but depending on the workplace any song that's ostentatious would probably be frowned down on. I usually just have my phone on vibrate. Can't think of any of my coworkers' phones going off to a ringtone either. I think pretty much everyone either just has their phones on vibrate or set to a stock ringtone sound.

If he's mandating you to change it and there's nothing in the employee handbook that backs him up, then escalate the issue to HR. My guess is that if he's uncomfortable with it, you probably have your ringtone set obnoxiously loud though.

Sure. I work for AVIS car rentals at the corporate level (I was offered a Job at Enterprise which I turned down).

My team is responsible for Acquire cars and distributing them throughout the various fleets across Canada. Its a pretty laid back atmosphere for the most part. We arrange deals with dealerships to buy cars at wholesale value as well as auctioning and reselling them to the market once we are finished with them or they have reached a certain mileage and we are also responsible for gaining new business in the sense of getting corporate accounts and bodyshops to use us as their primary source of rentals.

We each use our personal phones because a lot of times a branch in our designated area has run out of cars and we are responsible for getting them inventory when that arises. A lot of times Im outside the office trying to generate new business so keeping my phone on me at all times is really important.

For the last couple of months I've been at the top of our ranking system for Sales and revnue generated. I wont lie I've never been very good at many things in my life but I seem to have a knack for this. I would not be surprised if this newfound success has gone to my head and I am Ego tripping.

Lol! What was the OP thinking? That's definitely not something for a work environment. Nothing wrong with it for personal calls at all, though.

Thank you! This is needed in the OP, in my opinion.

Okay, first and foremost, you are out getting new business and you have a ringtone (the ringtone in general doesn't matter) on? Right then and there as your manager I would tell you to change to a default or vibrate preferably. His use of the word 'uncomfortable' is terrible and should have been put better.

If you really want to be a leader at work, suggest that you all put your phones on silent when out drumming up new business. If I was a prospective client, I would find it incredibly rude if a guy trying to sell me on his business had his ringer go off and it was some song or jingle (vibrate is fine).

I thought that your office punished people by making them buy bagels, not with write-ups. I'd say you should snitch to HR about your boss betraying your Laid Back Values, but . . .

Asked my roommates if there was any way that could be perceived as offensive, four white people scratched their heads for five minutes and came up blank. One of them suggested you change it to 'Black and white' and sing it to him next time your phone rings, which sounds just lovely to me.

But, yeah. There's like, four words in the song. None of them are profanity. The only way I can see it making someone uncomfortable is if they spent all day every day mentally blocking out your race and that damn direct ringtone just shatters all their hard work.

Interrogate the manager. Make them say why it makes them uncomfortable. Preferably while they're in earshot of witnesses.

Fake edit - If you're actually topping the charts for your team, that manager should be laying down rose petals in front of you whenever you enter the office. I wonder how much of their bonus rides on your stats?

Seems it's not some stuffy cubicle land where no one has cell phones going off all the time. And cell phones aren't disrupting people from doing their jobs in this laid back work place.

They make you use your personal phone.

I don't think you're being unprofessional. I came to that conclusion by your boss being made to feel uncomfortable from the song about how black you are.

Do others have songs as their ringers? Is there an official policy for ringers?

Hmm.

Not gunna lie OP, it's a strange ringtone. I think it'll work best if you just crank the ringer volume on your phone. Everytime you get a call take your time answering, and make sure to make eye contact with everyone in your vicinity.
