Naruto author: Naruto’s Story is at Final Phase

Last I checked Naruto has 100+ Million volumes sold in Japan, I'm not sure of the exact number right now. Adding the rest of the worlds sales (Naruto constantly tops the New York Times Best Seller list when a new volume comes out), you'd get a higher number. I still believe One Piece has sold more overall, but its disingenuous to think of One Piece as the "Big One" of Shonen Jump.

In 2007, Naruto was selling under 1 million copies/year total in the US, accounting for almost 10% of all US manga sales, a number which was reportedly slowing down in growth. Publishers Weekly reported the english manga market was cut in half between 2007 and 2012, with the big publishers (ie: Viz) suffering less, but still suffering.

Naruto is certainly a popular series but I can't imagine it has more than 1/3rd the lifetime sales of One Piece. Dragon Ball was last reported at around 230. I wouldn't put OP as the "Big One", but in Japan it certainly stands alone.

In comparison to what doe. And even in set up, at least the whole hidden ninja village thing seems very ninja, and clans and what not.

Naruto has nothing to compare itself to in terms of ninja pop culture in the west.

Also there is a lot more shit going than Kamehameha, like... alot. Like I question if you have seen it , alot.

Man I remember when Nabari no Ou first came out, I thought that was going to be the definitive ninja manga...then everything went so damn wrong.

For people who been reading Naruto and want to read some good Shonen series I would recommend:

Shit gets real in this manga, lots of great moments.

Starts of a bit slow but it gets really good. Avoid the shitty anime adaptation.

The Seven Deadly Sins (nanatsu no taizai)

Manga started just last year. It's a really fun shonen series with lots of potential.

This has my attention

If you've never heard of it, there's even a oneshot of it that he released probably about a year ago. Admittedly, it isn't that great, but neither was Naruto pilot chapter that hot in my opinion. I'm willing to give it a chance whenever it starts.

I think ive heard of it, and pilot anything usually arent good so I wouldnt judge from it.

He has been saying this for years ... doesn't one of the games have "Hokage Naruto" already?

Is Fairy Tail any good? What's it about? Is it made by that Rave Artist?

It's by the same guy that made Rave yes. Fairy Tail is mediocre at best unfortunately

Mashima is simultaneously too afraid to shake up things (he always seems to back off any time he's going to do anything remotely interesting
like killing off Makarov during Tenrou or keeping Lisanna dead
) and is also way too formulaic (Jellal will make a guest appearance, somehow, Natsu is always going to beat the big bad, Erza is going to do something awesome once per arc)

I guess it could claim one of the Big 3 Spots through fanservice alone though lol

It really is doe.

One peice got too much shit going one to be contained to one manga, and suffers for it.

World building != bloat. It's a good thing that secondary characters, no matter how minor, are actually doing shit on and off screen, because it makes the world feel alive. It's a good thing that there are multiple different interests in the world, and everyone's lives don't revolve around the hero. That's something only Part I of Naruto did well. Naruto's war would've been actually good if Kishi didn't forget about everyone not named Naruto or Sasuke for most of Part II.

Pretty surreal to know Naruto (and possibly Bleach) will be ending next year. It's been constant reading material in my life for the past 10+ years. With the way One Piece is going, it easily has another 7-10 years left...or more.

I wonder what Jump will do to replace Naruto, though. I doubt Kishi cam replicate Naruto's mainstream success with a new work, and Jump hasn't been all that successful in nurturing the next big hit.

Next year would mark 10 years of my following the manga.

What is life beyond Uchiha?

I don't want to know.

Don't worry Kishi will allow Nomura dream to come true by allowing him to use the rights to sasuke "the sauce" uchiha renaming FFXV to Sasuke chronicles & his boy band team hawk in 2019 just in time for ps5.

He even has in magic in the game.

Kishimoto's response to Naruto's success in the west makes me lol

"Responding to Naruto's success, Kishimoto said in Naruto Collector Winter 2007/2008 that he was "very glad that the American audience has accepted and understood ninja. It shows that the American audience has good taste... because it means they can accept something previously unfamiliar to them."

Wat.

Yes, people in colourful outfits blasting power bombs that can blow up mountains is "ninja".

People do things on and off screen in most fiction. This is not new.

One piece is bloaty, and does not give me any incentive to give a shit about anyone else

They decided to make it a love story about the two main male characters and pretty much erase the entire battle shonen aspect. It's also around the time it's popularity waned, pure coincidence I'm sure lol.

People wanted the action-ey ninja stuff presented at the beginning and the thing that drew them in, instead of the narritively weak sexually driven romance thing direction I threw it in. whoda thunk it.

lolwat. What happens?

ahem.

Young Boy: hey you don't have to be evil, we can elope

Older Boy: sure, but I have a disease , so I might die soon.

Young boy: we can elope until you die.

And then they did.

and that was it.

Without Bleach and Naruto all we have is One Piece, but unfortunately I can't tell what is going on because of the terrible art.

Sad days coming.

I'm afraid One Piece might end before Final Fantasy 15 comes out.

While I would say terrible, his characters designs are very polarizing a metric shit ton are fantastic, and the rest are just boring.

And special positioning and panel flow aren't the strongest thing in one piece's arsenal.

I prefer watching the anime than reading the manga, it gets pretty clustered in those panels.

Toriko isn't part of the classic Shonen Trinity (One Piece/Naruto/Bleach).

"Classic" did not start at that age. Sailor Moon,Dragon Ball Z, Ranma 11/2, Evangelion, Tenchi Muyo, Escaflowne, Yu Yu Hakusho were the big early classics when the anime craze first hit over here in series form. Before that all we got were Sci Fi channel "japanime saturdays" with feature films that were mainly Akira, Demon City Shinjuki, Tenchi Muyo in Love, and Galaxy Express 999.

Series anime kicked in around 1997 when Dragonball and Sailormoon started getting shown on cable and Fox. It didn't start with Naruto on Cartoon Network.

Americans always thinking the world equals America, in Europe the anime craze started around late 1988/90 before a lot series you mentioned, I got into anime in 1992/93 so classics would mean a different set of animes to me then those younger then me or from different regions, classic means different things to different people, to a generation it's naruto to others as far back as astro boy.

Years ago I was faithfullu reading Naruto and Bleach.

Now....

Naruto became the longuest war ever with the Kamehame-Ninja and whatnot.

Bleach with those Nazi-Quincy is maybe the worst thing that could happen. I mean. While the ''plot'' is different (NOT). A Enemy appear. That group seems invincible. Or not. Ichigo trains somewhere to become uber powerful version 12. Urahara and Ishin still works in the shadow cause they always do that, we still haven't seen the spirit king, Aizen still there.

Why do I keep reading Bleach?

I'm more in Seinen now, Vagabond, Berserk, Vinland Saga... those really got me these years. Bad thing is that they update slowly, but I came to appreciate the time they put in each chapter. At least the art keep good.

One Piece cold go on for a good while, Oda created a world so big that only his imagination is the only limitation.

The manga has reeked of the fact that is being made for the anime, and not vice-versa. Bu the good thing about that is that the anime is pretty bad-ass this days and will probably have some awesome fights coming up. Its pretty shocking how good they made Itachi vs Kabuto.

The full(or most) of Hashirama vs Madara for example

Sure, let's just casually drop that in this thread.

Still hurts man, Neji was so badass when he was introduced then they reduced him to some wackass who shoots air....

I liked the series back when it wasn't full on DBZ. You know when cats knew like 5-15 jutsu and the fact knowing 1000+ jutsu put you in hokage league, and there was this power limit called chakra. Now everyone has like unlimited chakra, know a shitload of jutsu and basically can blow up entire continents if they willed it.

Like how the fuck does Sasuke have even remotely enough chakra to abuse his mangekyo sharingan as much as he does?! Like really. Like dude has as much chakra as Naruto...word?

I suppose I could go back and watch the last few years of episodes... if someone made a guide of what episodes are too terrible to even fastforward through

Naruto stopped being good post time skip. Shame, I used to like the series. Never was a big fan of Bleach, it started off alright but then it got really bad after the rescue arc of what's her name that isn't important anymore.

But they throw all that stuff out in the first part.

Metric shit ton of it in sasuke leaving, naruto beginning to learn stuff with jiriya and their team breaking up. And while i like shikimaru dude was a background character, hell he had more shit to do in part two. Hell a lot of the characters had far more shit to do , and far more fleshing out in part two. I'm trying to figure out where people are getting this "part two is different" no it isnt.

Its the samn damn manga, except naruto is taller.

The final arc of part 1 was Naruto teaming up with Neji, Shika, Choji, and Kiba and it was awesome. Part two should have had more arcs like that where Naruto teamed up with various kohona 11 ninja or ninja from other clans. Instead we get Sai (who's worthless), Sakura (who's despite training with Tsunade) still sucks, and Naruto who despite spending 2 years training with Jiraya still needs to train.

Heck half of canon Shippuden/part 2 is just Naruto training, seriously every other arc Naruto is training. Wasn't the whole point of the time skip to power up the cast without us having to spend dozens of chapters on them training?

Why does part 2 suck? Because it throws out everything part 1 established for the most part? Remember all that development Lee got about defending his ninja way and nearly dying agains Gaara, then risking his life in a surgery to be a ninja again? Then he showed up only to lose and be saved by gaara at the end of part... And then he didn't do anything for the entirety of part 2. What about Neji and all the development he got in part 1, the same character who didn't show up for almost all of part two, until Kishi decided to
kill him
.

Part 2 of Naruto sucks because it throws almost all the unique characters and team based ideas part 1 introduced and replaces them with nothing but dbz style fights. The story shifted away from the superior villains in Orochimaru and Kabuto to the Akatsuki who were just a conga line of manipulated idiots.

Also One piece sales wise obliterates everything else it's just a fact. Except for North America it outsells Naruto and virtually every other manga combined. It's already surpassed DBZ as the most bought manga worldwide.

Naruto being near end game has been known for years. There's really nowhere to go with it, given they reunited him with Sasuke, gave him full command of the kyuubi, revealed Tobi/Obito, revived the juubi, and made the entire ninja world recognize Naruto's greatness. At this point, all that's left is to figure out what hax Edo Madara pulls out of his ass to bring the world to the brink once more, before he gets talk-no-jutsu'd by Naruto.

I'll miss the manga, but I have to say that so far, the high watermark was the Pain fight. Pain (not Nagato) was pure, unadulterated evil, and made no bones about annihilating Konoha. Plus, he was easily one of the coolest villains the manga has ever seen. Too bad Nagato himself pussed out at the end, otherwise the legacy of Pain would have been awesome. PEACE.

Don't worry Kishi will allow Nomura dream to come true by allowing him to use the rights to sasuke "the sauce" uchiha renaming FFXV to Sasuke chronicles & his boy band team hawk in 2019 just in time for ps5.

He even has in magic in the game.
tbh, the thought of playing as an even more badass Sasuke made me hyped for XV.

For people who been reading Naruto and want to read some good Shonen series I would recommend:

Shit gets real in this manga, lots of great moments.

Why you gonna troll 'em like that? You know this douchebag will never complete the series and will just end up disappointing all its readers. I'm so mad I even started reading it last year, because once I caught up, the damn thing went on hiatus for over a year. That said, it does have some awesome moments. PEACE.

I think its still like that. I mean outside of like Naruto/Sasuke, who are the series' darlings of course, nobody is really on the Kages level. I mean we just saw
Madara basically play with the 5 kage
like it was a joke.

Idk, DBZ is just the weirdest comment I get from the series. Over 600 plus chapters and generally the same characters who were the strongest before are still by large the strongest, with the main characters only now getting to that level in the end-game.

DBZ was random character after random character coming out of nowhere and Goku or somebody pulling random strength outta somewhere to beat them.

Kishi's writing is pretty vague in the article. I know this battle and the current arc is ending. I think that's what that article was referring to and what he was talking about. And somehow it was spun into "The entire Naruto manga is ending"

Now I do expect it to end, but I doubt this is the last arc. It doesn't match up to some of the license and merch deals expected to continue well into 2014

I've already given up on the big 3.

Gave up on Naruto some chapters back.
Itachi is gone? That means I'm done too.

Bleach? I don't even know whats going on with that anymore.
I stopped at the part where he got his reforged swords

One Piece. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of it. I did make it up to around the Enies Lobby arc before giving it up.

Other ones like Fairy Tail was meh. Beelzebub was OK.

The final arc of part 1 was Naruto teaming up with Neji, Shika, Choji, and Kiba and it was awesome. Part two should have had more arcs like that where Naruto teamed up with various kohona 11 ninja or ninja from other clans.
You mean tha thing that they are doing right now, and did several times before in shippuden. And have been doing for the last few years because the ninja war kind of forced everyone to work together a long with pain and the orginatization red cloud nail paint squadron. Did you just skip a metric shit ton of it. Or did you ignore it.. or what. I mean it was a lot of what was going on. for a long time now.

Instead we get Sai (who's worthless), Sakura (who's despite training with Tsunade) still sucks, and Naruto who despite spending 2 years training with Jiraya still needs to train.
The guy that got pushed out of the camera because of the thing I just explained. And as for sakura, if all goes as well, and naruto does not get with her. Her lack of character development will be well worth it it.

Heck half of canon Shippuden/part 2 is just Naruto training, seriously every other arc Naruto is training. Wasn't the whole point of the time skip to power up the cast without us having to spend dozens of chapters on them training?
Ask Dragon Ball,yu yu hakusho, hunter x hunter, jo jo, bleach, and the list goes on.

Why does part 2 suck? Because it throws out everything part 1 established for the most part? Remember all that development Lee got about defending his ninja way and nearly dying agains Gaara, then risking his life in a surgery to be a ninja again? They didn't focus on rock lee, they focused on other characters, like shikimaru. Who seems like a more worth while person to focus on. This isn't a point I can argue, really. You feel like it sucks because it did no focus on the character you liked. I can't really argue you out of that one.
But part one of naruto throws that stuff out the window right after the waterfall arc, like right after. Sasuke gets the love bite, chinin exames, right the fuck out the window. Or are you remembering what you want to remember.
Also Orochimaru being superior to anything is a joke.

Also One piece sales wise obliterates everything else it's just a fact. Except for North America it outsells Naruto and virtually every other manga combined. It's already surpassed DBZ as the most bought manga worldwide
Popular does not equate to good.

It's worth reading or watching for what he has completed. Chimera Ant arc in the anime is pretty good right now.

Berserk will never be finished, HxH will never be finished, D-gray man will never be finished, oh but got Gantz fianlly ended

Man, it must have been at least 4 years since I read any Naruto chapter, it's been getting ridiculous. I really hope this IS the end.

I fell off that series, what happened to it?

It sucked is what happened. Talk about a series that peaked and then fell off. I don't want to post spoilers in here, so just know that as weird as that manga was when it started, it got even more ridiculous as time went on. Oh yeah, "TEI-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" "KEI-CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN" Volume upon volume of THAT. Ugh.

Claymore is also coming to a well-deserved end as well. I feel like all the manga I read are going to end in the next few years, and then I'll be freed to only read One Piece and not have to suffer anymore. Maybe I just read a lot of bad manga. PEACE.

What I would really like when Naruto ends is to have someone else retell the story. You know everything in the lore and all the major plot points and characters, rearrange everything shorten the boring parts shift focus as you like and give us a work of more consistent quality. Use a different medium or target a different demographic if you like.
I honestly think there are about 3 major weak points that are unavoidable in a retelling:

  1. The mass revival no jutsu. The two times.
  2. Orochimaru's death and the endless asspulls of Sasuke.
  3. The main villain, his motive and his plan.
Still I believe that with good direction they could lessen the aftertaste of these events.

Some suggestions about how to tackle things differently:

  1. Promote Sasuke to a lead role, heck call the manga Naruto & Sasuke. As much as I hate him he already hogs a lot of screen time and a lot of Naruto's arcs are dedicated to him. If he was another lead character both characters' stories can advance side to side without hindering the whole plot with their.. relationship.
  2. Just like how Shikamaru got his own arc and almost everyone loved it give the other Konoha 12 equal love, or just any love in the case of Shino and Tenten. Replace the more fillery parts with focus on them or just give them more prominent roles in Naruto's story. Maybe use the meaningless time skip to just focus on them? Or move all of Naruto's actual training to the time skip during which he "trained."
  3. Instead of introducing the concept of
    life beyond Konoha
in the war arc have it there from the start, maybe even promote some of those side side characters to side characters.
  4. Instead of having lengthy flashbacks mid fights give us more gaidens, I wouldn't mind them telling parts or even all of the lore chronologically.

If you reached this part thanks for reading :p

I wish One Piece was at its final phase. There's too much filler - even in the manga. I want to know about the epic storyline.

What? Have you even been reading it this past year? One Piece has been the best it's ever been these last couple years and doesn't show signs of slowing down. There's still a lot of ground to cover and Oda seems like he knows what he's doing with it all.

I haven't read Naruto since he
met his mother
, and I'll probably reread the whole series after it ends.
