EviLore I'm guessing you get PMs from people requesting these since I've seen them in the bans list. Do people ever explain why they are asking for it? Like others have said, I've always found it odd. They can just stop coming to the site.

Motives vary. Some people want to break an addiction to the site, some people are on a hateful self-righteous kick, etc.

I guess I can get the addiction thing, like they want to break a habit to be more productive. But if I was to do it I'd need to block the site completely for myself. I spent most of my time on GAF just lurking. It's only relatively recently that I've been posting more. If I got my account banned I'd probably still just end up lurking and getting most of what I was already coming to GAF for anyway.

Everyone is different. It’s just like the ignore function. Some people will never use ignore and find it pointless, others couldn’t contribute here without it. “Why not just log out?” is basically saying “Why not just pass over anyone you don’t like or not respond to posts you don’t like, why use ignore?” Not everyone is built same. Also, it’s somewhat similar to people asking to be banned from poker rooms or casinos.

You’ll probably never need a self-ban, and/or never use ignore, but it’s a function that certainly serves a purpose for those that need it. People see different. Hardly anyone truly operates the same as anyone else.

In fairness to the OP, it sounds like he wasn’t trying to make a public thread. Unless he’s full of shit.
