NeoGAF, WY?

If we commit a sum of money, we're only locked in if the purchase goes through, correct? I of course know this, but want to be certain.

That is correct.

10 acres seems sizeable, but I don't think it really is.

The red box is an acre. So that 10 times.

If someone with experience or schooling in planning provided input, it would be greatly valued.

Also, I like the idea of seeking some kind of sponsorship to help us subsidize this effort. If we can get some extra help with the promise of all PR/Marketing opportunities that were to come from an internet forum now owning a city in the US, go towards promoting the shit out of that brand, we can make this happen. Though it'd have to be a smaller brand, since the company itself could just buy the town for PR.

Buzz would have to be generated for this to be feasible. Most likely by someone writing to local media and selling them on the story. Of course buzz may not be all it's cracked up to be and the money would certainly come with some strings.

Could we possibly get a corporate sponsorship and agree to plaster all property with their logo? Stephen Colbert could help with SuperPAC money.

The town could be called, "Stephen Colbert presents GAFville by Stephen Colbert"

That is correct.

be sure to toss my $500 in the pool.

Do we have any economists on gaf? If we plan to run a sustainable community some form of business would have to be done. I suppose everyone could just get jobs over the internet though...

I'm in for a grand, although we should probably check the place out first.

Also, the auction: http://www.williamsauction.com/campaigns/buford-wyoming-town-auction/
From the website:
Online bidders compete in real time against on-site bidders for properties auctioned by Williams & Williams. Contact Williams & Williams customer service (800.801.8003) if you need assistance or have questions.

To bid on the Buford, WY Trading Post through Auction Network, a bid deposit of $50,000 is required by 12PM CDT on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Please call Drew Ary at 918.362.7312 for wiring instructions.

Edit: I'm guessing this auction will hit over a million even if it is nowheresville, USA

I claim Director of Parks and Recreation! Just give me 1000sq ft to build a nice two bed two bath home and I am all good. I will make sure we have parks and rec for all families who dwell within our city limits.

Just gauging interest at the moment. Just say how much you'd be willing to put in. Maybe a kick starter should be opened up if there is enough interest?

and similar to Double Fine, we should totally film a documentary were we to win. I know it might not sound interesting, but it would definitely made the indie circuit if we shot it right and really told a story about us banding together to buy it and then what happens next.

Well, maybe a kick starter should be opened sooner than later... I think the GAF collective could swing it. We could set the date of the kick starter to end on the 3rd, and have a trusted GAF member to handle the funds. If the bidding goes over whatever's raised, said trusted GAF member refunds all the money through kick starter (if possible). Just an idea anyways.

EDIT:
Also, I imagine if it got a proper thread with a good OT we could get a lot of GAF members interested. Also, there's the idea mentioned previously of sponsors.

What are the chances this actually happens? Would be pretty amazing if it did.

I double my input to $200.

Also, I think everybody that donates should get a certificate that says that they are part owner of the city of NeoGAF.

Here you go, another update fresh out of the oven.

special tags. also, how will we divvy up the land and make this work? i am all for this happening and will go to $1k, but we should setup some rules otherwise lawsuits will start happening!

You forgot me. Also I double it to two grand.

This is like playing house where we're totally irresponsible children, except we actually have money to be irresponsible with.

I think you should get a chunk of land directly related to how much you payed. Take the total amount (whatever it ends up being), divide your payment by that amount, multiply by 100. That's the percent of the land you own. Actual placement could be worked out later.

The only way it would work is if there were lawyers there for the setup. Even then, there would have to be a minimum input for a claim of land to make things manageable.

Added. Lol, it is a zany idea. I would certainly hope no one put in money that they couldn't do without. I would consider this less an investment and more pitching in to buy a commune for the benefit of like-minded people. A cool place to hangout for a few days/weeks or live in depending on your circumstances and time of year. Any money anyone made on passerbys would be icing on the cake imo.

What makes you think this will go for 10x the starting bid?
How often do people get the opportunity to own their own town? To become the mayor, the sheriff, the town planner, what have you. And it's not just a single store, it's five buildings total.

Wait, you all are serious about this? Put me down for 10 then. Also what someone else said I want my money back if this falls through.

yeah, middle of nowhere be damned, this is going to drum up a lot of interest from certain parties.

I do think we need to take this to kickstarter where we can also solicit donations outside of GAF, we can promise small tier rewards similar to, again, Double Fine, the hardest part will be convincing them that we're legit and will refund money in the event we lose.

We should see how much money GAF as a whole donated to the Adventure kickstarter and then see if we can ask Tim to endorse our efforts to lend credibility to our campaign.

Equal land for all contributors. We will be leaving our past lives behind, and that includes our income class status. This is a community project, and certain members of the community shouldn't be given an advantage over others because of they have more money. In GAFland, we share the wealth. It's not money, but loyalty to the project, and to the NeoGAF that matters.

Christ, to be honest if this falls through, we ought to take over ownership of a pub or something like that. We already have enough (pledged) capital to take over a turnkey operation in some parts of the country.

But, I'm holding out for my official sherrif's badge of New GAF City.

At first I thought you guys was just playing, but I think I'd throw in an amount if all logistics get figured out.
And if I can have a cool townie title.

If everyone else is on board with that, then I would be too. Unfortunately using kick starter would open it up to the public, and I imagine they wouldn't see it the same way. Unless we limited it to NeoGAF only.

EDIT:

Is there anyone who lives in the area who could run down and maybe take pictures, ask about the bidding, etc? I would, but I'm in Canada, so it would be a little distance to travel ;P

Well, we wouldn't give access to normal non-GAF plebeians, we'll just give them rewards like, have your name on the official town monument or something. I'm sure some people would be willing to chip in $10-20 to see their name etched in stone in some internet town.

You're too good for 4chans money?

slippery slope you raise. while i agree that the idealistic view of all are equal would be nice, I still can't see it playing out that way. Those who contribute more clearly want and probably are more willing to up root and help do something with this town than someone who donates $50 just for the cause.

With their $50 and a declaration of all are equal, he can come in at a time of his or her choosing and simply waltz into town when all the heavy lifting is done and make a claim to a piece of land or something. I think certain dollar amounts have to guarantee certain privileges. It is a nice thought for everything to be rosy but it won't happen that way.

Maybe I am taking it more seriously than others, though people willing to commit $10K i can just as easily assume are serious about doing something potentially game changing in this country. Nothing instantly will be changed, but this would make national and world news if an internet forum banded together to buy a town and turned it into something special.

The town already has a source of income. The gas station.

The only one for miles.

Right next to the freeway.

I would imagine it brings in a decent penny.

And the fact that the town was bought by the internet would be enough reason for tourists to come and visit. We'd be rolling in the dough selling GAF shirts and memorabilia.

If this has a snowball's chance in hell of being realized, I'd donate up to 10k. I doubt that others aren't gonna bid on this too.

I assume you'll be wearing a crown?

I'll be wearing a hamster thong.

With a picture of Dhalsim in the front. And a hole where his nose should be.

exactly, there is huge potential in this effort. but an effort it will be. we'll need to be very careful about how this is all handled but with the right connections we can blow this shit up.

Get a fucking DLC town in a new Fallout modeled after NeoGafTon, tourists stopping by, opening the whole city up to sponsorship (depending on what the town agrees on). It is kind of limitless what can be done with such a wacky wacky town. Make ourselves a center hub for SOMETHING cool. Within 35-50 years, population is 1 million and it is one of the top ten places to live in the US. BOOM! All created by a bunch of strangers on an internet forum. History book...footnote!

True, but then who would stay there to sell them? We wouldn't be able to begin constructing homes until we had a decent amount of money show up(unless gaffers were willing to build homes themselves lol) so we'd need to pick some people to live in the house (and maybe even refit the old schoolhouse for rooms) to make capital until we have enough to start building places to live.

Put me down for $100.

I can run the GAFBank. No fees anywhere and mini-loans. Permabans for non-payment.

GAF Gold fees are enough to fund the town's economic development.

You never been camping bro?

You never been camping bro?

Well, I suppose that's one option... As a matter of fact, with enough people perhaps a tent community wouldn't be so bad at first... it could end up being pretty cool actually.

EDIT:
I actually grew up on a farm and have enough experience at it to start a medium sized crop. I don't know how much we would end up having to rely on such a thing, but it's an option.
