Yeah theres a lot of uncalled-for shit directed at female cosplayers, no doubt about that.

But you can't deny that "geek chic" has been commercialized to hell, and that always brings lots of moochers looking for a free meal ticket.

When I was a kid I remember the son of some neighbors who was really into oldschool rap. I remember the guy because sometimes he was really pissed off at how commercial rap and hiphop had become. Rap goes back to the seventies but nobody cared back then because rap DIDN'T MAKE ANY MONEY. The moment it did, boom! every nobody was a rapper.

Now is the same with geek culture, somebody saw there was money to be made and started this trend we see now. My problem is that it devalues our culture, it brings all these poseurs who only care about what they can get from this. They don't participate, they don't contribute, in fact most of them just steal and copy whatever is trending right now.

Some of these cosplaying girls are very passionate about this stuff, but many others are model school rejects, the girls who didn't make it to the runway so they go to wherever it seems theres a lower bar. It was the same with hiphop, you have truckloads of total hacks who can't even remix a song right, fake gangstas living in whiteyville with a stock portfolio.

When you have a girl cosplaying as slave Leia and you can't find anything from her except a model mayhem profile then my guess is shes not a geek.

And i was talking about the same changes that happened in lots of other places in the same time and how they don't take the past for true, and yet they take the girls can't being genuine fans as true.
Do you acept the changes in anime viewing and yet you don't acept the changes in public opening ?

The problem seems more focuse on women and why not on the sexism ... here is a good example :

This will go hand in hand with what I will respond with next......

Ok .. these people sure exist ... but look at my word : These PEOPLE, not just these women.
Why people say that most of the hot GIRLS are doing this and not the hot males ?

You can't be a hot girls and like what you like ?
Do you believe the universe is balanced in any way ? =P

Why do people think of this without any other reason behind if not for simple PREJUDICE ?
And guess what they call prejudice on sex ? =P

Ok, it seems as I am going to have to break a couple of things down for you. And show you why things aren't similar.

1. The anime following was diverse and it had nothing to do with being male nor female but more about those weird people watching cartoons in a language they didn't understand and the content of those cartoons are questionable. It was more a social barrier because of how the animated medium grew in many areas so people stopped viewing animated media as a form of conveying a story to any/everyone and started viewing it more as a thing only children could watch and enjoy. It took generations for that to go away.

2. The geek culture for the longest time (and basically still is) DOMINATED by MEN. So to ask why a hot guy in cosplay isn't singled out as often is for a few reasons. One, again the industry and its following is normally dominated by men so it is easier to believe that a male no matter how they look would be more interested in games than females. Two, Male models do not pander as much as the females do to garner attention. Three, there is far more money , again in a male dominated industry, for a female just by being good looking than a male in the same industry. Example: The tuner scene. How many magazines or media do you see a scantily clad hot guy posing over a car? Compare that to how many times you see examples of scantily clad women doing that. What do you think the perception becomes of females dressed like that at an auto show?

3. I am not sure of what world you are living in but booth babes, I didn't create the term, are for the most part WOMEN. If there is a male model for a game series it is few and far between. I can only think of three official ones at the trade shows and that would be masterchief, kratos and Issac from Dead Space. Now I know there are alot more male game characters out there but that doesn't change the fact that the industry used females alot more than they did males. If they couldn't find a character for these females to look like, they would be wearing skimpy outfits with company logo's on them.

I am all for equality, and I respect geeky women and women cosplayers. But it is no mystery how things got to this state and why there is a sense of uneasiness. As soon as you start saying something as empty as "why don't hot guys" catch the same flack you either have not been looking at trade shows for the past 15 years or you are just taking the opposite stance simply to be contrary. Even if you were apart of GirlGAF, you would still have known this to be true.

Again I am not saying that is how things should always be and I am actually proud of the female developers and female gamers speaking out more and making their presence being known, but I am simply pointing out the bad practices of the industry led to this state and most of the community isn't going to switch to accepting like the flick of a light switch. There will be suspicion for a little while but that will go away soon at the rate female gamers are asserting themselves.

Nail on the head!

So what? I mean, are you disparaging her to say she's not a geek? She shouldn't be allowed to cosplay? What? How much geek knowledge must one have before one may be allowed to let their tits hang out? Why can't someone just be interested in cosplay itself?

You are completely missing the point here: being completely unrelated to this culture yet demanding recognition as some of these fake cosplayers do ruins it for the true cosplayers out there.

I been called a hipster for wearing old gaming shirts I have since the nineties, and yes those who called me that are dumb jerks, but theres also a lot of posers with faux-vintage 8bit art shirts out there who never had a NES or a Genesis, who back then when preppy assholes who at best played Madden and now they try to play the gamer-angle to look edgy.

Because those posers are everywhere these days they make even real fans like me look bad, is like dubsteb which used to be an underground genre and now thanks to skrillex every idiot with Fruityloops and a laptop is pumping this crap he learned from a youtube tutorial.

Well if the fact you want to fuck her doesn't show that she is good looking and 'in your league' then i don't know what will! I personally don't like her but your attitude is disgusting.

I totally get his viewpoint, perpetuating an unhealthy lifestyle is not something he wants to do, he just said it in a shitty way...

There is nothing wrong with that. But you see way to many articles about Female cosplayers who are fans of the content upset at the reaction they get from other geeks who think they aren't actually interested in the source of the cosplay.

I was simply pointing out to Platy that the booth babes, models that capitalize on the industry and females that are interested in the cosplay yet know nothing about the source, have outnumbered the real female fans on the scene, so they shouldn't get upset when people assume they aren't fans of the source or actually get surprised when real knowledge about the content is displayed.

Did Romney join Weapon X?

Is Ryan going to be Sabretooth?

Oh noes, hot girls in our culture, noooo

Always good to see a Tira cosplayer.

Hot girls who are not nerds, OMG end of the world.

They are here, and probably to stay. As the community grows you are going to see more and more. If anything don't pay them any mind. I don't see why this is such a serious issue...

When you go to car shows there are plenty of models who don't know about cars, and there some who do... whatever...

There are car shows where girls show up dressed skimpily just because? :p

I think the distinction is between booth babe and cosplayer, not really much analog in other events.

There's a subreddit on Reddit called nsfwcosplay that might tickle your fancy. Only pictures though, no video.

On further research I just found another subbreddit called cosporn that has videos

You're welcome XD
