Just downloaded the GOM Media Player - damn, this is the best media player I've ever seen (free or otherwise).

Thanks for this nice list.

I'd suggest to add meGUI under Video utilities.
It's a nice little program for encoding to x264/XviD/lavc/Snow with MP4/MKV/AVI output & audio. Some more info here and here.

You should add that Virtual PC 2007 does not support any XP or Vista Home Editions. **** knows why.

Because of your glowing praise I decided to go to the site. It definitely looks better than VLC and I like how it directs itself to a free codec site to d/l any needed codecs. I'm about to install it to see if I can say goodbye to media player classic and VLC.

Anyone else want to comment on Sandboxie? How good is it at protection, and does sandboxing items also result in the loss of passwords, say?
And what's with the porn comment, is it really that reliable? :lol

yeah its good, but sometimes i got this weird slowdown after a commercial break in some tv shows, it annoyed me so i changed to zoom player wich is pretty awesome..except for the mandatory codec downloads when you install it.

Lo-Volt: you can test it with internet explorer first (i assume you use mainly another browser) and see if it erases any information, and that porn comment wasn`t from me, it was from the poster that originally suggested it.

You bet I don't use IE as my primary. It seems to work, but it's a little wonky. I dunno how I feel about it yet.

how good is windows vista with its registry management? do you still have to run registry cleaning programs like Free Window Registry Repair once in a while?

Camino (OSX Gecko based Web browser), Bean (OSX open source, tiny word processor), iSquint (great OSX ipod converter), Transmission (best OSX native BT client which now has selective dling, prioritizing files, and torrent creation in the beta), Adium (Awesome libpurple based im client for OSX ), Aurora (great itunes alarm clock OSX), AppCleaner (osx its like a free Appzapper), Cabos (best Gnutella P2P client for Windows and OSX), Flip4Mac+Perian (covers every codec for the mac), Frozen Bubble (free game for all platforms), Google Notifier (all platforms), Unarchiver (best decompressor for the mac). There's alot more but I'm tired of typing.

CD Art Display is a nice app for showing album cover art when songs are played through a variety of players. It looks for embedded art first and if nothing's there you can search Amazon and save the image you choose.

On this if you are using Winamp i suggest the toaster plugin instead :D

*edit* and for media players i used this a while back - pretty nifty piece of software :D (can be set to work with a lot of winamp plugins, skinnable, built in encoders, etc.)

Just found this thread and downloaded a few programs. Very awesome thread. Any chance (or need?) to update for Win7?

Wow this thread is pretty damn old, maybe i should make a 2010 edition (with win 7 support) but i'm not sure if that's really needed.
