New Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay - "Officer Down"

This looks good but I have a question...

Are lots of cutscenes and QTE's such as L1 to "even the odds" acceptable now that it's batman?

It's context sensitive, but you can still just call the batmobile when you please outside these scenarios as well...I think.

Oh c'mon now, don't go trying to compare this to The Order. Mind, you I'm not a fan of the QTE, but this is like being bitten by a mosquito and telling your friend the shark bite victim, that: "See, not a big deal to get bitten by something".

QTE? Nothing "Quick time" about it man. Pretty sure Batman would continue standing there if the player didn't hit the button.

Nothing to do with the order. It's just the recent trend of "I hate cinematics and QTE's in my games, I'd rather watch a movie etc etc" that I've seen lately. From this footage it looks like this game commits a lot of those 'crimes" but I've seen very few people say anything about it.

Ok so let's be pedantic and say it's not "quick time". What happens if the button isn't pressed?

Yeah, really glad they finally made it a point to show proper console footage and also feature more of the freeflow combat. The disarms look awesome, he truly became BAT-man in that fight. (pun intended).

The cinematic "QTE" moments you're referring to seem to be introductions to player abilities. That probably the first time the player can use the Batmobile, but from then on, they can press L1 to call it whenever.

Game looks good on PS4. Close to the E3 2013 gameplay. Still months left of polish.

I don't know about you guys but i'm hardly going to use the batmobile. I loved walking around in AC taking in the atmosphere. The only thing i don't like from the videos and pictures is the way chinatown looks. It looks more like Times Square Manhattan than dark creepy alley Gotham. Hopefully the other areas resemble the original gotham look.

I'm not impressed. I mean sure the graphics are very nice, but it's the gameplay I'm not fond of, and the fighting in the video just made it clear for me. Be it the color from the impact of punches and kicks, or the 5 meter roll he did to get to the opponent so that he could continue his combo streak. I would also have prefered a closer camera when fighting.

Never been a big fan of the games though, and have pretty much only played Arkham Asylum, which was good at the time.

Still waiting on a great AAA Spider-Man game title, which I'm afraid won't ever happen.

Those 'QTEs' are essentially tutorials, all it does show the ability for the first time and tell the player that this is the button to press if you want to use that ability.

I believe L1 just calls in the batmobile wherever you are.

Ok fine. But I feel the way it's introduced to the player is pretty obnoxious considering the dialogue that's just gone before.

It's up there with F to pay respects.

Ahhhh, you just quoted my answer.

The basic Batman combat loop has grown stale for me... especially now that so many other games are aping it.

Loved Arkham Asylum, but that was a long time ago. I get why people are so into it, but I'm tired of combo chasing combat... Batman looks like a dipshit warping all over everywhere from one attack to another. The animation blending is cool, impressive, and I think looks pretty awesome in close combat, but once he starts flipping and rolling all round, looks dumb.

The tank stuff they showed moths back is completely whatever... Idk. I passed on Origins, and have zero hype for this.

Would you rather it just say "press L1 to call the batmobile"?

It is nothing like "press F to pay respects". In CoD...was that a continually used action? No. Think of the "even the odds" prompt as a tutorial to the player pretty much saying, hey...this is the button you will press throughout the game to call in the Batmobile.

You are getting WAY too hung up on a simple button prompt man.

Aside from the vastly superior image quality of the original e3 trailer, this looks like it has less lights in the environment and way way lower LOD (you could see every little detail for miles and even building interiors were fully detailed as you flew past them)

One of the bigger downgrades, then again the original looked way way too good to be true anyhow

They're tutorial hints. You'll probably be able to disable them.

The video is likely showing the first time in the game Batman calls the Batmobile. That's why it's labelled differently, and why there's a short cutscene when he jumps down. It's just for this one instance. Similar things will probably happen when you get new equipment, but most of the time you'll have full control.

Have you not played any of the previous games?

I can't wait for this game. Looks a bit more brutal than the previous one's. The Batmobile segment was a little flat, but there may be a lot they aren't showing just yet.

Yeh pretty much. And an explanation of the contexts where you will and won't be able to call it during the game. Or even better they could have used something in the dialogue to give a cue to the player on what they need to do to call it. Not "I'm evening the odds" ---> "press l1 to even the odds". Anything but that.

They way they put it comes across as a parody of "press a for awesome".

Yup. Looks like a Batman game :D

Also obviously the PS4 version, honestly doesn't look that much better than Arkham Origins on PC, I expect much more in terms of visuals from the PC version.

Graphics nitpicking aside though, gameplay looks fantastic as always. We're in for a treat :D

Driving looks terrible and tedious.

Looks like an upgraded Arkham City. I'll be getting day 1, but damn did my hype level drop. It's Arkham City with QTE cutscenes :/

You seem to be pressing N for nitpicking.

I need to rewatch this video. Where are all these QTEs people are talking about?

L1 calls in the Batmobile in normal open world play, they were just being cute by naming it "even the odds" for the first time you call it in. It's literally just a gag, "I'm evening the odds" *button prompt for L1-Even the odds* player thinks "What does even the odds mean?" MOTHERFUCKING BATMOBILE.

We can't have a writer putting in fun segues for something as throwaway as button prompts.

combat changes I've noticed:

- combo decay seems way more lenient. There was a long pause without any action and the combo counter still kept its value at 20ish x.

- Enemies grab you occasionally and you have to button mash outta it.

- fear multitakedown seems... OP? Not sure why it exists besides them having to add a new feature... just because.

- Think the slowmo last hit looks better, due to better tech.

- Seems like the exp scoring system is ripped outta Arkham Origins. Hope the skill tree is way less of a hassle.

The game looks good on a first look. But there are still some disappointing elements about the atmosphere and the animations. which the developer still didn't changed after previous titles:

1.) The city is still too bright in general. There are so many light sources in every part of the city, that you don't feel like being a creature of the night. They also look very disorientating, especially while driving.
I really wish, they would make the dubious quarters very dark and the popular areas very bright. So you can feel the light and dark sides of Gotham.

2.) Enemies still wait, while the game plays out longer knock-out-animations. It was always the worst offender in breaking the flow of a fight in previous titles. It's a unnecessary money shot, which gets old very fast.
There are two ways around this problem in my opinion:
- Simply let them attack and have the player and Batman counter an opponent, with the enemy in his hand (for example Batman doges and the attacker accidentally hits his ally). This makes the game a little harder, since they are not bullet-prove any more. But the normal instance take-down is already interpretable, only that you don't need to have the opponent on the ground.
- Make the animations shorter or/and have Batman look very intimating, while going through the take-down-animation. Give a visual reason, why the other back up or don't intervene.

3.) Batman moves big distances in milliseconds from one enemy to the other. It just looks goofy. He is still supposed to be human and not being the Flash, you know. Either change the targeting, so that he will only target close enemies, simple let the player fail the combo, if he targets an opponent to far away, or have a connecting move-option (for example dogging) to continue the combo. Yes, it makes the game a little harder, but least you earn yourself the combo.

Other then this i really like the inclusion of city-streets in the city-design. After an interview, about for Arkham Knight, where one developer was pointing this element out and playing Batman Origin at the time, the older games really look very strange with there missing streets. Great city design in general.
