I can't even begin to fathom what sort of reaction we'll see when gaming narratives approach some hollywood-level stuff, including nudity and sex scenes. I'm not one of these basement geeks clamoring for fan service, merely I just want sexuality in gaming to be properly done. Very few games have been able to cast female characters without oversexualizing them, so it's nice when we see a female character who is sexy, but doesn't need a DD chest to get the point home. Take Parasite Eve's Aya Brea. She was able to be sexy merely by having character and a take-no-shit attitude. She was fully dressed throughout the entire game, barely exposing any skin.
Gotta agree. A friend of mine already expressed concerns based on merely hearing that there was a game where the main character transformed her hair into stiletto boots to fight with. While I disagree with that, the point is that this is an intelligent person concerned about the portrayal of her gender in games, not the girl complaining about Fat Princess.
Beyond Good and Evil managed to have a female main character that was not at all sexualized and was drawn in such a way that she could be viewed as being a part of just about any race. I think this is more what people want to see.
At the same time sometimes sexualizing a character isn't always a bad thing. Men are often portrayed just as unrealistically without much in the way of complaints.
I think the issue is that we need to start trying to reach a degree of parity. A male character can easily exist that isn't portrayed in a heavily unrealistic fashion, but it's very uncommon to find a female character portrayed in any way but a sexual one.
This game looks good and based on Clover's reputation I'm definitely interested, but some things, namely the increasingly revealing outfit, are probably a pretty bad idea. If there's going to be fan service, maybe balance it out with something for the ladies as well so nobody can complain.
