New Ecco the Dolphin kickstarter

To be clear right off, this is not an Ecco the Dolphin game, it appears to be an Ecco the Dolphin STYLE game made by the original team.

Yeah, seems like a pretty big detail to miss. The title of their Kickstarter is certainly misleading too.

Hmm, I've never done kickstarter but I may need to get in on this. Ecco DC is still my game of the forever.

Coincidentally it also take forever to finish so GotF works on multiple levels.

The title is quite misleading. I kept reading through the page looking for the bit where SEGA sanctioned this. I understand what they are aiming for now though.

I'm certainly wishing the project success though, but really, I thought SEGA had given this team the go-ahead to continue their dormant IP.

But will there still be fucked up alien shit coming out of nowhere?

This is important.

Sounds like they have ocean trash monsters?

Gyreforms

Gyreforms are strange malignant life forms that evolved from the accumulation of plastic trash in the pacific gyre. Since it evolved from plastic, this parasitic life form is NOT organic.

Sounds significantly less scary!

I got so excited and it's
not ecco?
likely to be an mmo?
aquatic version of eve online?
heavily monetized with creature cards?
AND a subscription fee?

heart broken

Is Tim Follin doing the OST ?
If so i'll kickstart the heck out of it

otherwise..hmmm...don't think so.

It doesn't seem to be an actual Ecco game, just a similar style dolphin/ocean game made by the people that made the original Ecco.

I guess Sega didn't want to make a new Ecco or let them use the license .

The Music

Spencer Nilsen will team up with Bear McCreary (Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) to compose the Big Blue's musical score.

YES^

But not sure how I feel about an Ecco MMO...

yeah, thats about how I feel

FFS. I like the idea of the single-player kickstarter. I don't want an MMO. Why is the stretch goal to turn it into an MMO? It really turns me off the idea, to be honest. Either pitch the concept as an MMO, or a single-player - don't say you'll switch it half-way through the campaign. As a potential backer, I don't know what I'm backing - I want to back a single player game, I don't want to back an MMO - so at the moment, I'm not backing.

Surprised Kickstarter let this one go up. The title is misleading and borders on copyright confusion and the least, and probably more than that.

Kinda misleading. "The next "ECCO the Dolphin" adventure game" implies a sequel, when in reality it is more of a spiritual successor to the series.

I'll wait and see how it ends up but I'm not very confident for some reason.

Hopefully it will surpass Aquaria, though that was a self funded indie game.

This is my opinion as well. I was all excited until I saw what they were doing with it. Do developers honestly think that the people who would back this stuff on Kickstarter are actually interested in backing a MMO? I have no desire to back something like that. I'll be extremely surprised if they'll even hit their goal.

Heh, seems like so much of their original hype has been killed once people figured out what they were actually working on. Either way, I met Spencer Nilsen many years ago and he's a great guy. I wish him the best in either case.

The story and idea behind it is interesting. Then when I got to part about MMO, they completely lost me. Why does everything have to be turned into an MMO these days? Most MMOs don't even last long until they're F2P. I'm wondering how they plan on making it interesting enough as an MMO to have folks pay for a subscription anyway.

The ONLY good thing about this is more Ecco style music from Spencer Nilsen.

Everything else about this is just completely disappointing.

an MMO? really?

If it get's funded I'll look forward to the soundtrack.

It sounds to me like the first version of the game will be singleplayer, then it will be expanded into an MMO version later:

"If we reach our goal the first version of the Big Blue will be a single player adventure game."

"There will be many subsequent updates to the game. This will lead the Big Blue to support multiplayer and then finally a massively multiplayer game."

Though they could really do with clarifying this stuff.

Would back if it was an actual Ecco-styled game. Not interested in a dolphin MMO. A big part of the appeal of Ecco was its haunting lonely atmosphere
which breaks into steampunk dyatopia nightmare fuel
, its unique premise and mechanics, and its brutal difficulty.

If they make this sort of game, I'm behind it.
