New Ecco the Dolphin kickstarter

rofl@ "If we hit 2x our goal we'll make it an MMO!"

Annnd I'm out

edit: Bonus hilarity

"If you have played the game Eve Online, think of an aquatic version of that game and you’d have a good idea how the Big Blue Online will work. "

Yes, tell me more about your dolphin power blocs, political backstabbing, and griefing of other dolphinkind in 1.0sec waters

Is it becoming more common for Kickstarter pitches to move away from videos now and just show pictures and descriptions?

Shovel Knight and now this. Not complaining, just wondering if this is becoming the trend.

Guys lets be honest this game was average at best.

I remember that Ecco: Defender of the Future actually went into surprisingly acute detail about the structures and politics of dolphin society...

Umm... no way is this getting funded.

- 665,000 is a lot of money to ask for a game that has some tenuous connections to a mostly forgotten franchise.
- Grand concepts vs lame looking tablet gameplay.
- The backer rewards are awful.
- The card concept sounds like a lame cashgrab.
- Them promising a MMO if they pass certain funding goals means that they don't really have a real gameplan in place.
- Both dudes look rather tired and disinterested.

"The Big Blue" is the name of the game? I know they cannot use Ecco without Sega on board.

Developed using Unity. So it is a mobile game. It is not clear if it is a 2D or 3D adventure (I would prefer the first).

Also I did not understand their "cards" system well.

Their budget seems to be modest, as big games costs millions, but it is a mobile game after all. But this rise my suspections:

If we exceed our goal by 50% the game will get multiplayer, cooperative game play. Players will be able to share environments, creatures, and complete quests as teams.
If we reach 2X our goal we will be able make the Big Blue an MMO.

This is very strange, since concepts for single player, multiplayer and MMO are completely different.

Came into this topic with wallet in hand, left disappointed at the realization that I would be funding not a new Ecco game but a dolphin MMO.

No go. Nothing against the guy but CD Ecco soundtrack has NOTHING on Genesis version. NOTHING.

And nope.

Also, the thread title is misleading. Stop looking for sensations GAF and tell me the truth.

EXACTLY!!!
I prefer the Genesis/Megadrive versions of the soundtrack. Not that Spencer version was bad its just the original material was something out of this world.

Dunno about this. I'm all for an adventure game or co-op game but I don't see how money makes THAT game an MMO. Seems like it would end up needing to be completely different if its even remotely like other MMOs (which I'd be uninterested in). I don't know much about EVE Online but it doesn't seem like an adventure game I'm familiar with.

I haven't heard all of either version but I like what I've heard of the CD version so much more.

Why would we want an MMO out of this?

Give me 2D Ecco 3 (sans license if sega still owns it) and we have a deal.

I loved Ecco growing up. When I saw this headline, I got so excited. Then I saw mobile game. Then I saw potential MMO.

Are you kidding? They have no plan. What a shame.

Ah they should have paired Nielsen with Tim Follin. His Defender of the Future soundtrack is amazing.

Not interested at all in a game made for phones, though.

Not sure if want... great that the original team's involved, and tragic that Sega ignored them. Not like they have much going for them.

Also, the Sega CD OSTs are godlike. I should know, I just finished Ecco CD.

This. :/ Was almost jumping up and down from excitement for a new ecco game...

Looking at how much they were able to get over night, I have a feeling they're not really gonna make it. Heh, if they're going to use Kickstarter for a new game, then they have to think about the audience they're pitching the game to. Just seems like they made a mistake in that area.

Feels like some folks these days are just lost on either A) how to pitch their idea; or B) literally have no ideas set in stone for their game, with a little bit of everything tossed in for good measure. Gotta make sure we get all crowds on board! Though to be fair, I'm not sure if B most times is because they just want to cover "all" bases or they literally have no idea what the hell they are doing.

I am confused recently by some of these Kickstarters being either so vague or so broad. Would you be able to sell this game to a publisher this way? Hell no. So how do they think they can do so when crowdsourcing? I just really hope they figure it out along the way, remove it, maybe come up with a clearer vision, and try again.

They would be wise and probably sell the game a bit more if more about the game was actually within video. Like what it's for. I don't remember that being in video. I just remember seeing a tablet and going "oh god iOS." Somewhere much further down I remember reading them about wanting to get the big three on board. If someone were to go on video alone, they wouldn't get the full picture. I thought Kickstarters, or at least up until recently, really sold their pitch through the video moreso than the text.

665k seems a little excessive, no?

Not really, seems like that'd be the budget for "HD" Genesis graphics, right? I mean Skullgirls needed roughly the same-ballpark right?

As it is, I don't see there being a market for a new Ecco. Those that are interested are a VERY VERY vocal minority. I'd like it to happen but I don't think this kickstarter will be successful.

But I'd be very surprised and shocked if it does happen.

The real question is whether or not this is even an "Ecco" game. We really have no idea. I'd be all over it if it was, but them throwing MMO and such is just confusing.

I'd love a new Ecco game but I'm fine with this game not being it. Underwater exploration sounds like a great premise for a game. Imagine if they had the game world mapped out, you'd have everything from the shallow blue coast to the deep trenches where light doesn't even reach. What kind of horror lurks down below? Just thinking about it gives me chills.

I'll follow the progress but I'm not really convinced to back at that point.

I can understand that Ecco is not exactly everybody's cup of tea.

But to call Ecco an "average" game is fucking ridiculous.

These games are just way too thematically unique in this industry to just brush them off.

I want to start my own kickstart project.

Goal - $2,000,000.

Purpose - Make my life easier.

Level 1. $5,000 - you get my thanks by email.

Level 2. $15,000 - you get my thanks by text message.

Level 3. $25,000 - you get my thanks over the phone.

Level 4. $35,000 - you get my thanks by skype.

Not sure why you think this post is relevant, funny, or anything other than cringeworthy regurgitation, especially since this project has defined goals and a concept that doesn't break the Kickstarter ToS. I can understand not being happy about this presentation, heck I'm not happy with it, but Jesus man. Somebody already did a drive by of the PA Kickstarter comic so you think that your point had already been made.

my first thought was "...of all the franchises..." but then i read what its looking to do...well, that's interesting i guess

i mean personally i think id be more excited for a bonanza bros kickstarter but whatever, good luck to these guys

Sorry man, I didn't think it was going to make you that upset. If I knew I would not post it.

Wow, this is the first time ive seen a Kickstarter with a stretch goal people actually dont want.

That MMO part turned me off completely.

I'm salty after Sega delaying PSO2 today but... I dunno. This does kinda sweeten it up a little (even if the Sega name isn't attached to it).

Hopefully they make the MMO-deal optional if they end up hitting that goal of 2x the original amount...

This looks beautiful and I hope they reach their first goal soon!

Yeeeaaahhhh........

I'm sorry if I'm not impressed.

I like Ecco. But I don't know how this will turn out.

terrible presentation. seriously bad MMO concept. why mobile/ouya at all? there isn't anywhere near enough power there for something like this. sounds like a huge cash grab
