New Ecco the Dolphin kickstarter

Is it bad to say that I really, REALLY hope they don't reach 2x their goal?

-----The project sounds very neat otherwise. I love zen games.

Action adventure card game that can be turned into an MMO easily for just double the budget.

Warning flags all over the place. Don't fund this.
Our goal is to create the most beautiful water and lighting effects ever seen. Our team has a lot of experience in this area and we plan to push it to the limit.
Using Artificial-life technologies, the Big Blue will be teaming with life. Swarming and flocking behaviors will give the ocean a hyper realistic, living feel. Everything in the Big Blue will be alive and reactive.
If we reach our goal the first version of the Big Blue will be a single player adventure game.

Stretch Goals

If we exceed our goal by 50% the game will get multiplayer, cooperative game play. Players will be able to share environments, creatures, and complete quests as teams.

If we reach 2X our goal we will be able make the Big Blue an MMO.

One of their stretch goals is to make the game an MMO.

Not sure about this.
Agreed, to me seeing their "pitch" it seemed like they are way over confident and almost misleading in how they describe their vision for the game. They should have a disclaimer on all their imagery that its all concept art.

Anyways, they are preying on people's nostalgia, and the way they're throwing adjectives around, it seems highly unlikely they can reach those expectations with
A 12 person team and under a million bucks...

the main description page has been changed up a bit from just couple hours ago, it now excplicitly states Linux support but has scaled back on stretch goal about MMO

This project will probably fail, I think. The page has been updated - with no acknowledgment of the fact - removing the MMO thing completely. Seems as if they don't know what they want to make, really. One of those kickstarters that had a bad pitch and will probably fail because of it.

They posted an update explaining how the game plays. Good update, read it.

No go. Nothing against the guy but CD Ecco soundtrack has NOTHING on Genesis version. NOTHING.
No way, that is entirely backwards. The CD Ecco soundtracks are absolutely amazing, some of the best ever...

And nope.

Also, the thread title is misleading. Stop looking for sensations GAF and tell me the truth.
Yeah, the thread title should have put "Ecco the Dolphin" in quotes like it is in the pitch; that showed that it isn't actually Ecco, but is in fact a somewhat Ecco-like game by the same people. The thread title doesn't have that.

terrible presentation. seriously bad MMO concept. why mobile/ouya at all? there isn't anywhere near enough power there for something like this.
Yeah, I doubt that the mobile version could have the MMO features, but remember that it isn't only (or first) an MMO, and they say that they'd scale the game up or down depending on the platform, so I would not expect each version to be the same.

There are no "warning flags" in those first two quotes there, and that last one only is if you dislike MMOs. What in the world are you talking about?

Sounds like they have no idea what theyre doing. People have hopefully begun to understand that there are talented teams and people that want to make certain games that pubs unfortunately shy away from, and then there are teams of people that publishers shy away from entirely.

The warning flags are a complete lack of direction, use of buzzwords, and the tone of the Kickstarter. They list features that to me look like they are there only as check boxes. It doesn't make sense and it looks like no time was put into it.
I still don't understand what the game is.
There's a new update titled "No MMO", but for some reason it's for backers only. They've also removed the MMO stretch goal from the front page.
And stuff like this isn't helping.

Sorry, I don't see it. They're not just using buzzwords, they're describing the game they're making. It's an underwater game, of course it needs water effects, good AI, etc...

I can't tell you how much I want a new Ecco game, but these guys seem like they have absolutely no direction for this. Such a shame.

I'm glad they are cutting the MMO nonsense, but they still need to figure out what they actually want to do with this.

Man, this isn't going to cross the finish line at the rate it is going. $2,000 a day isn't going to cut it. Looks like this is why Sega won't make another Ecco. Even if the presenation of Big Blue wasn't that great, there isn't an Ecco fan base big enough to fund a spiritual successor.

Yeah, it's a damn shame. I was just listening to the soundtrack to Defender of the Future and it really sucks that we'll most likely never see another game like that again. :\

I don't agree. The Big Blue is really nothing like Ecco the Dolphin. In fact nobody even knows what the Big Blue is supposed to be anyway. A 2D Ecco game wouldn't need as much funding as they're asking now, and people would be more inclined to support it since they'd know what to expect. Ecco the Dolphin on XBLA also sold rather well. There's an audience, I'm sure of that. But this Kickstarter isn't going to reach it.

Agreed. I can almost guarantee you that an actual Ecco kickstarter would easily hit $1,000,000.

I don't know what they were thinking with this game. MMO? Cards? Blah..

It doesn't help that the cheapest boxed copy of the game is $500. Collectors like myself eat that shit up, but $500? That's insulting.

This sounds very ambitious, if they are able to pull it off it could be interesting. I really like Bear McCreary too. However, I can't help but get a definite Superman 64 vibe from this game.

Defender had an immaculate soundtrack. It was so beautiful. /tear

I was excited until I saw the iPad.

Yes, I am that shallow.

All that pretty imagery in the beginning...not there = (

Sure enough, came up pretty damn short. 8%, it's a shame.

Think they can come back again with some scaled back objectives?

I'd settle for something that actually sounds playable. Considering their pitch was basically "it's an underwater action-adventure-puzzle-simulation card-based RTS game that will turn into an MMO eventually" I'm shocked they managed to get any backers at all.
