New Fear Effect announced (Kickstarter/dev:Sushee/SE approved/like Shadowrun Returns)

Everything was great until the part about them not sexualizing the characters. I'm sorry but that's a part of Fear Effect and I find this way more insulting than gratuitous T&A

You ever play Fear Effect 1 or 2? Like, for real?

The sexualization of those games is grossly exaggerated. Just like one scene in Fear Effect 2 and borderline nothing in 1.

I got the PS1 discs in the back right now

I'm sure they'd love to make a 3rd person survival horror/action game as soon as your 10 million kickstarter contribution clears. :P

I dunno, I loved these games back in the day, and I think an isometric take on Fear Effect can work. It probably doesn't hurt that Shadowrun Dragonfall is one of my favourte games of the last couple of years, although I think FF should probably lean more on the horror angle. Now that I think about it the cyberpunk Hong Kong with chinese mysticism from Shadowrun Hong Kong is actually basically the same setting.

I'll back it.

There's a lot more than that. The shower scene, running about as Hana in a towel (who even has to drop it to distract a guard as part of the world's most ingenious inventory puzzle) and running about in skimpy attire in the brothel. And then there's the sequel which pushes the sexualisation even more. I mean what the hell was going on with that giant bug thing that appeared to be pleasuring Rain at some point? Geez, that was fucked up.

Thing is though, tonally the games are on point. They know exactly what they are, so the sexualisation, while rampant, didn't exactly feel out of place.

The characters are playful though through the enture thing, plus there are just awkwardly funny moments like when the bad guy hooks Rain into that machine. The sexualisation was really tame yes, but what was there was playful and funny yet they still wanna get rid of it.

Biggest gripe with this is yet another game no longer being survival horror playstyle.

edit: And it's PC only...

This is pretty cool news. I loved the horror and gore aspect of the two games but the tittilation aspect of them were disappointing, mostly with the marketing and the gratuitous stuff.

Regardless, I'll back this for sure. Excited to see what they have in store.

"It's better than nothing" should be the reply to the ones who understandably are disappointed that gameplay genre isn't the same as the predecessors.

I get what you're saying, but do you think that big tone shifts like Bomberman: Act Zero or gameplay shifts like Shadowrun 2007 or again X-Com: The Bureau were "better than nothing"? I think they were disastrous and threatened to end the franchises they were from.

Having FE revived in the wrong way would seal the series's fate forever, no second chances.

You're completely right and I definitely agree with you but then again both SR and X-Com managed to survive. X-Com already had its primary genre without its off-shoot, while SR was rebooted thanks to talent and determination by Jordan and Mitch.

I think getting the Fear Effect name out there will help regardless of genre shift. We'll see how the KS goes.

Art and shots seem to be lacking the dark and horror aspect of the original games:

The Kickstarter will be 12 April, Tuesday

Yes I was afraid of that, anyways I think they misunderstood what they said on the articles. They wanted to keep the exploration and puzzles. Only the combat will be different. They want to keep the sex too just in a different way. Gamers were expecting a huge game with a better budget.

As a FE fan I can tell it looks a lot like Fear Effect, that's why I'm surprise there are so many bad reactions, they only saw two screenshots and have no information about it at all. They should wait until the kickstarter. We're not changing the game in everything, it's just that we did not want to make a sequel to the real FE franchise, they wanted to make a spin-off. Gameplay is not what made of FE Fear Effec

The art is absolutely spot-on, that has to be someone from the original team. I'm a little sad by the lukewarm reactions too, I see more to be optimistic about than not.

Also, that has to be a prequel, since
Zeke is still alive. :P

They had to realize people were going to want the story continued since we never got Inferno, the writer of all people should know that.

The fate of FE is already sealed. SE has no interest in making new FE games. Any external party would be able to use the IP to make a game, if SE liked the pitch but SE itself won't make one.
This FE game being bad or good, tonally shifting or not, being in a different genre or not has no bearing on the fate of FE games.

If it's still set in China, i may give it a shot still.
After all the adventure element was half of the gameplay (and the most fun part, imo) so they may still retain that.
Isometric view means they HAVE to cut on the cinematic aspect though, which was a big part of the original games.

Anyway, i'll see the KS pitch and decide then.

Also, the art above has an early 00s vibe so strong, Better Off Alone may start playing at any moment.

The concept art says "China" in it, I'd say that's a safe bet. They seem like they know what they're doing.

And maybe they'll still have cinematics, I really wouldn't count this out until we know more.

I was really excited when I first saw this...but then I read about it and realized that this isn't what I want at all out of Fear Effect. Unless I see more, I see no reason for me to kickstart this.

It bears repeating: FE1 is a must-play. It starts out as a generic action game, and suddenly goes into extremely twisted occult horror territory. There is some serious nightmare fuel in FE1. FE2 is almost tame in comparison, but still worth playing.

Both games have been sitting in my backlog for years I need to get around to playing them.

Why do people keep saying this? Shadowrun was fantastic and won lots of accolades.

OK?

I don't like shadowrun or that type of gameplay

But I loved fear effect 1 and 2. Pre-rendered action / survival horror games is like my fav genre ever

I'm sure others wanted what I want. Same type of game just with better tech

Shadowrun 2007 was awesome though, it just came before its time ans had awful marketing and was tied to windowlive, it even had cross play.

None of those game threatend to end their main series either btw. Bomberman & Shadowrun were already dead, X-Com was in development hell so long we already had a real XCom on the way by the time it was released.

Not arguing against your point but these were bad examples. I think it can go either way, Warcraft shifted from RTS to MMO, legacy of Kain shifted from isometric to 3rd person etc.

I loved the first game but never got around to playing the sequel. I'll probably back this. Maybe the first two games could get a remaster or something.

Love how sexy the characters still look.

But man how I wish this was pre-rendered backgrounds.... they don't even have to be FMV like the originals.

Mang!

Is this just SE testing the waters for FE by releasing a "spinoff?"

Because if so fuck them. Just give us the real meat!

That's just an ad though, that's not in the game. Only sexy interaction between the two is the pretty innocuous elevator scene IIRC. There's not really much to tone down.

Also:

Guess it was Eidos's thing back in the day.

Ahh, to be 10 years old again.

eh, this might be alright. It would probably garner more attention of they were able to dust off what was made of Inferno and finish it/tune it up somehow. That character art sure is looking nice tho.

It's funny how Deke and Glas gradually became more and more buff/conventionally good looking with each installment (including Inferno). They both looked like total slime balls in the first game.

Actually, it seems to be a huge fan of the game as far as I've gathered. He or she is doing a lot of work for this game, apparently. I hope the studio isn't exploiting the passion at the expense of monetary compensation for the work.

Also, I played through the first game through ePSXe (and perhaps the second, can't recall) not long ago:

It worked okay, but I'm glad I had quick save through the emulator otherwise I might have gotten a bit frustrated from the deaths.

I replayed it on Expert. Imagine how much fun that was.

Filth and lies. Replayed them last year, loved both.

Replaying a game you have loved in the past is different that coming at a game that hasn't aged well fresh.

If people can play the RE1 remake or the Grim Fandango remaster, they can play these. They've held up really well.

No they really haven't. I can't see anyone new to the series getting much enjoyment out of them now. You had to forgive a lot to enjoy them on release.

Saying "You had to forgive a lot to enjoy them on release" is just another way of saying the game has flaws. Guess what, every game has flaws, even the ones that are renowned and hailed as classics to this day. Silent Hill 2 is arguably the most celebrated survival-horror of all time, yet there's still a whole lot of shit you can sling at it, whether it's the hokey voice-acting, the stiff movement, the simplistic combat, the obtuse puzzles or the (at times) unhelpful camera angles that obscure what you want to see. All of those things are legitimate complaints, and yet they're easily ignored because, quite simply, the game is scary as fuck.

Point being, yeah, Fear Effect has its problems. Most games from that era do, when 3D was still in its infancy. But it's just as easy to overlook those issues and recognise a series that is wholly unique and like nothing else out there still to this day. I can see someone who has never dabbled with Fear Effect before, but had some experience with old-school survival-horror games, playing it for the first time and quickly adjusting to the tank controls while being enraptured by the environments brought to life by the MotionFX tech. The eerie-as-hell atmosphere that permeates every location and the hefty presence of adventure genre elements a la Grim Fandango is just as much of a boon now as it was back in 1999, and displays a level of ambition that is sadly lacking in the genre currently.

Anyone who to this day can still play the first Resident Evil and enjoy it owns it to themselves to try out Fear Effect.

I agree that recommending someone with no nostalgia for the series go play the original Resident Evil is a terrible idea. And Fear Effect plays a lot worse than Resident Evil.

Just to be clear, I like Fear Effect but it doesn't hold up and I think any recommendations for new players to the series need to be given a big disclaimer saying that you are going to have to put up with a lot to get any enjoyment out of it.

Never played Fear Effect, but I am a huge fan of Shadowrun returns and it looks my type of game. It seems like its a way to get to both fans of both games as well as not over stretching their goals/budget.

The problem lies to do a decent remake/sequel to a game like Fear Effect in a similar style would be quite costly project in terms of sales figures etc, look at the recent Alone in the Dark games as a best example. Poor budget action games tend to sell poorly as they are competing with bigger titles, unless they are a sleeper hit.

A good example of how two different developers/publishers have approached a similar game is Roller Coaster Tycoon World and Planet Coaster. One will sell well and the other will bomb, mainly due to fan backing and treating fans with respect. As well as proper development and feedback.

I like Fear Effect but it will not work now, because is 2016.
What do statements like this even mean? Do you mean in terms of being politically correct? Or in terms of narrative themes? Or in terms of game mechanics?

If it's the last one I remember both REmake on RE0 doing very well on consoles + PC and those happened literally this year. Nothing about it in terms of narrative themes is really played out; if anything it'd be refreshing to see a game dealing with Chinese occultism in the current gaming environment where there's literally mostly space marines, generic action hero #3485824 and Tolkien lore dominating almost everything, and a game with a lesbian couple could actually be rather progressive these days and not just used as sexual appeal to men (and there's nothing wrong with doing that, btw. Hell I'm sure a lot of women would also enjoy that).

A new Fear Effect could do just dandy. Let's give it a chance, at least.

Exactly. I'd like to think most gamers aren't so lazy and close-minded as to completely turn down something b/c it may involve a few minutes of getting acclimated to its style, or else this hobby is boned.

Replaying a game you have loved in the past is different that coming at a game that hasn't aged well fresh.

No they really haven't. I can't see anyone new to the series getting much enjoyment out of them now. You had to forgive a lot to enjoy them on release.

The problem w/ your opinions on this is that you're clearly showing a slanted bias against these games in particular, and playing favorites. Which everyone does to some degree, but you're also downplaying myriads of other reasons and factors some people being new to the games could enjoy them as much, if not more so, than your supposed "best picks".

Obviously the devs on this new one felt they were still good enough to make a new entry around, so there's at least a good magnitude more people out there who still enjoy them, and a decent amount who may even check out the first two if they enjoy the new entry. But what you're basically doing here is trying to dissuade against even giving people the choice to do that, which I can only assume is based off of your own personal experience.

However, you haven't even explained why you feel the games don't hold up at all and aren't worth the effort.

A New fear effect is always welcome but i think a lot of people are getting really tired of kickstarter projects that don't deliver on quality. Couldn't they just make puppy eyes ate square and have some money on this? I mean, it's possibly just my opinion, but square has been doing a lot to redeem themselves and so far, they're doing good (looking at you, nier automata), another game backed by them, with motivated developers could result in something incredible, but then again, just my 2 cents.
