New Halo 3 SP Campaign screenshot

I hate screenshots that don't show you how it looks when I'm playing it. Don't care.


Give me a First Person screen with HUD please.

:O Even better. I just finished Halo 2 for the first time this weekend and I really liked that character.

OT: The ending to H2 definitely blew, just like everyone said. The buildup to the ending was awesome.

That bugs me also, but I think that's more of a design choice.

Besides if it's "in-game" where's the HUD, where's your life and armor levels, your ammo, the radar, etc etc.
Is it first time that you are seeing in-game shot without HUD? It's not rocket science to hide it for screenshot during development.

That's wonderful, so did you take this shot and upload it to bungie's site while playing the game? Honestly that feature doesn't mean shit till the game comes out and has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

I disagree, look at the old image the armor had a kind of rough texture quality to it, now look at the new shot, not a single piece of armor has that same bump to it. They are all now completely flat, look at his chest plates which stand out the most, they're in the light and yet are completely smooth, not like in the old shot.

I have no doubt they are using normal maps, but the old shot has the armor looking more worn and torn, grittier and more beat up. There's a smoothness to it on the new shot that just loses everything the old shot had to me.

Could it possibly be that the smoothness of the armor is due to the screen being early in the game thus the suit being less damaged? No couldn't be...

It's AAx4 on this shot, on x16 like it is added usually.
 
Do we know what build this is from? For all we know it could be an early build (which would be scary). Forgive me if this is obvious and I'm missing something.

Sure but most the time they do that it's at least shown from the actual game play perspective. This is a FPS and we're seeing the chief from a 3rd person shot with no hud, come on.

Eh, this one seems nicer to me. The other shots all make it seem like he fell into a basin of concrete and was then hung to dry on a green paint line.

I think what he means (and I feel the same way) is that while this screenshot's visor clearly reflects an explosion, it does not have the dynamic, mirrored, murky effect that the E3 trailer visor has. It's the only thing in the image that bugs me. Everything else I'm very impressed with.
 
Here's the description of the epic explosion Luke described recenty:

Speaking of massive explosions, Story Bible-ologist Rob McClees sits directly behind me, and in the middle of turning around to say something derogatory to Frankie, my eyes were magnetized to his screen and some epic explosion that had just happened on it. After the explosion, and the three of us closed our wide-open mouths, Rob ran downstairs to talk to Effects wiz Steve Scott about what he had just seen.

When Rob came up the stairs, he was walking slowly, like someone who had just seen a ghost, but instead of a ghost he’d just supped sucked on an emergency oxygen supply mask full of gassy awesome. “That explosion we just saw is roughly half a million times more cool downstairs on Steve’s machine, there’s all kinds of amazing that isn’t even implemented yet.”

I propped the same build to my box and cheated my way to the part in question with the quickness. Then, because its debug code and we have tons cheatz at our disposal, I detached the camera from first-person and watched the spectacle unfold from a third-person perspective, with a free roaming camera (guided by my analog sticks). Here’s what I saw: The heat of a thousand suns being reflected in real-time off the Master Chief’s visor and the world being consumed by a huge white blast, blotting out everything on the horizon with white heat. And this is, as Rob pointed out, is going to be roughly half a million times cooler than it is right now.

Sounds like what we're seeing reflected in his visor.

It's more like the Halo 3 concept art thread. Lots of KZ avatars and me running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to downplay hype. :(

I guarantee you that if anyone trolled the Killzone thread they'd be banned pretty damn quick. Not really the case here.

Like I said, mods don't enter Halo threads.

I thought this was the cut-scene model? I mean, you don't see Master Chief during gameplay I'm assuming :P.

E3 movie looked better by leaps and bounds though, in every way.

i'd wait till you saw more from halo 3. this shot doesnt have as dramatic lighting and DOF could make the announcement shot appear to be better

Unless there's a new enemy that has a b-b gun that shoots thousands of smaller than normal sized b-bs at you just to annoy you and put thousands of tiny little dents into your armor, well then no. It's not a battle torn gash or dent I'm talking about, it's the roughness and grittyness to the armor from the E3 video that is completely absent in the new screen shot.
 
Has someone already noticed the difference?

Yeah, it's not too serious. I don't think the hype is very serious either; hell, even I have a Killzone avatar, and I'm hardly a Killzone fanatic.
