New Hitman: Absolution trailer [By Visual Works (Final Fantasy CG), out now]

I wonder if they will finally make sniping actually viable. That is, you would be able to get Silent Assassin by sniping your target. The sniper rifles have always been really sweet in these games (especially when you smuggled them through security in a briefcase), but the fact that you automatically forfeited the best rating by using them always made them seem pointless to me.

Why can't you market your game like this, IO? Why must you toy with my fragile heart? It's tearing me apart!

Obviously the crowd goes nuts but seeing as no one’s seen a thing I just ditch the gun and leave the flat. I have the thought that I could use the cop’s uniform to help make my escape. However, as I leave I’m told by producer Luke Valentine that the new disguise system means police will actually pay more attention to other officers. Essentially people notice their own kind, meaning you have to be more careful with disguise selection – the right suit no longer makes you instantly invisible. Ideally you’d pick something that lets you into a certain area, without attracting the attention of the people there.

Now that's pretty fucking cool.

The true badass 47 walked into the back of a surveillance vehicle and shot the three agents inside while confused.

No.
The true badass 47 dressed up as donut delivery guy. Put sedative into the donuts and gave them to the agents in the surveillance van. Why waste bullets?

Sounds great and could easily be shown in a demo.

Why are you doing your best to make this look like shit in the eyes of the majority of Hitman fans, IO?

Just show the chinatown options in a short demo, you'll win over very single person who thinks this is the Conviction of the Hitman series.

indeed. This should be the demo, show different ways of doing it and have a succes. Don't show the Conviction parts...

12 year olds are mighty impressed! It's edgy, has slow motion in it and fire! Also don't forget the women! After seeng this and Tomb Raider... I'm sceptical.

Hands-on footage apparently? Watching now.

I am... impressed so far, but then again all 47 has done is walk through an empty courtyard

/edit OH SHIT CROWDS

/edit OH SHIT MASSSSSIIVE CROWWWWDS (not quite Mardi Gras level but pretty impressive). Wow, bigger than Assassin's Creed.

Huh... not a pure 'sandbox' playthrough, they're cutting from scene to scene, but... pretty similar to the way I rememer Blood Money levels playing out - preset scenes, etc...

Watching now.. That guy has some huge front teeth man.

Wow terrible VA so far

That's all I got HOMEZZZZZ

Okay, I love that crowd shot of 47 in the gangsta clothes.

Edit: Just watched the video, okay you see now that's Hitman. Was it so hard to show it? Was that so freaking boring that it would kill all interest anyone had of it?

Seriously.

It is a very well made trailer.

Purely in the technical sense, maybe. But it's not selling the game or its ideas very well (unless new Hitman is a Dead Or Alive-esque brawler) and it's even alienating existing hitman fans who hated ditching of the Jesper Kyd and the fact the everything we've heard fromthe game makes it sound more like a Kane & Lynch sequel.

looks great to me. This has me hyped for the game.

Excellent find.

It's Hitman, pure unadulterated Hitman. Welcome back, 47. Welcome the fuck back. So happy right now. YES!

no, like i said, it's not hitman-esque. At all. So in that sense it doesn't do the game justice.
But it's great to watch. Eyecandy even.

I hope the reason we're not hearing any 47 voice is because they're reconsidering getting David Bateson back to voice him.

My point wasn't about people getting dead, it was about the fact that there's only two people there. That makes it kind of the opposite of a good example of Absolution having any Hitman gameplay in it.

For fuck's sake people, this is what a Hitman level looks like. There are people there. It's not about killing them or not because stealth and choices, they are just people. All they've shown us so far are rooms of people you have to deal with in some manner. That's Splinter Cell, fans are expecting Hitman.

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

And done, game is still Hitman and fans are happy, was that so freaking hard, IO? How about you show that first to get all of your existing fans on board AND THEN you start showing all of the new bits? You know, something everyone else except your marketing people would have done?

Fuck you guys. I'm gonna play your game, but I still hate you.

To be honest, when has the marketing of a video game ever been representative of the actual game? Remember Dragon Age's 'This Is The New Shit' debacle?

The existing fans are already going to be excited that they get another Hitman game. They can't show this first, they need to rope in the non-fans, and sadly the way to do that is flashy explosions and nunsassins in CGI latex.

Worked for me. :D

I only checked out the trailer because of Visual Works. I thought it was pretty awesome in a, as I said in an earlier post, Tarantino film kind of way. Now I've preordered this game and have Blood Money for 360 on the way (thanks, amazon!).

Apparently IO apologized for the trailer. (Examiner, Alex Mahan)

"This nun is showing too little cleavage to be considered provative by gamers that have been over-exposed to video game babes."

This is ridiculous. I see shit like that a lot in all different mediums and I can still call that provocative.

Also this stuck out to me

This apology comes shortly after a strong negative reaction to the topless woman that kicked off Ubisoft's E3 conference, and two months after Jessica Nigri was asked to leave PAX for dressing too provocatively.

The game industry appears to be waging a war against female sexuality; booth babes, sexual exploitation, and gratuitous nudity are no longer celebrated, but condemned. It has long been said that the video game industry is a "young and immature" industry; it has existed for far less time than other forms of entertainment, and seeks to appeal to adolescent males. When the Internet lashes out at developers for throwing an abundance of sex appeal into their games, is this a sign of the game industry maturing?

I wasn't aware there was a strong negative reaction to Ubi's E3 conference, and I also wasn't aware that the internet is lashing out at developers for including sex appeal in games. Did I miss something or is this really happening a lot more than usual? People seem to have the same stance on sex appeal in games that they've had for a long time now. Some people don't have an issue with it while others do.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I turned off the Ubi stream halfway into the FC3 demonstration... it was embarrassing.

I watched the AC and Watchdog demos later, on Youtube.

There wasn't really a negative reaction by gamers at least, but their reaction was annoying. After that beginning of the FC3 demo the next 8 pages of the Ubi thread was some variant OMG BEWBZ. How about some talk on the fucking game and act like you've seen a pair of boobs before?

As for the hitman nuns I'll stand by what I said before they showed the demo. It had no purpose at all. It didn't show any gameplay, it didn't tell a story, it didn't have a place except to throw some unnecessary near-nude women shooting various heavy weaponry off. Because that's assassiny apparently. That's why I was offended by it, not because it was "objectifying" or anything like that.

Some people said that the naked tits in the Far Cry 3 demo were a cheap shock, which is probably true, but should they be? I mean should a pair of tits really "shock" anyone?
It's kinda weird, and this is the only thing i felt really different in culture, visiting American forums.
Of course i'm not saying it's like this for all Americans, but it's the only cultural difference that was pretty consistant, in my (limited) experience between Euro and American forums.

Because the way they presented the sexuality was ham-fisted and embarrassing...

Same here. Looks like the writer was trying to get into something that... wasn't true? I've read stuff here and there during E3 and I didn't stumble across a complain about the Far Cry 3 demo.

Regarding the Hitman trailer, I don't understand why Tore Blystad says they are sorry. They made something, some people like it, some doesn't, just assume what you did. You can not please everyone. If you are about to say "sorry" everytime some people write they don't like what you did, you'll never be done with that.
All that for a CG trailer, damn. Better focus on constructive arguments about the game itself.

Because the way they presented the sexuality was ham-fisted and embarrassing...

How? It was a woman teasing a man. The only way that should be embarrassing is if you can't handle sexuality in games. The reason for the scene is that it sets up a relationship between the main character and the main villain because the woman is the villain's sister. Which is showcased later on in the demo. I will never understand how some people can be perfectly ok with killing people in games but if there is just a little sexuality they make a big deal out of it.

Because sex creates life. That's like... the opposite of killing! How un-American!

The bit you put in bold is a caption from the article. You kind of made it seem like that was part of IO's apology. I assume the word is supposed to be "provocative" anyway and not "provative", in which case there is a hint of sarcasm in that caption (i.e. it's a joke).
