New Metroid Other M Gameplay Trailer

That's odd. There's something between Metroid 1 and Metroid 2 that's missing. Can't remember though.

Oh right, the final act of Zero Mission.

The Prime series took place in between Metroid 1 and 2, so there should be no reason to reference it at all. I mean, maybe they'll throw in some stuff that might slightly reference it (Aurora Units would be the best bet), but Phazon, the main crutch of the Prime series is long gone.

I wouldn't expect ANY references. The Prime games are a great interpretation of Metroid, but they ended up diverging a lot from the world and story created by Sakamoto. The only "story elements" that matter in Metroid are Samus, the Chozo, the Pirates, the Federation, and the Metroids; and the Prime versions of each of those range from slightly to completely different.

This game looks pretty cool. Definitely sounds like a good alternative approach to a 3D Metroid. Samus' chest armor sure is pointy.

Yet ironically have the most convincing and cohesive representation of the Metroid universe.

Yeah, the Prime games couldn't ever decide on what Pirates even looked like. Not between games, not even in the same games.

And then there was pretty much everything about Metroid Prime itself in the first game. The plot holes involving how the Pirates found it (when it was impossible for them to have gotten into the Impact Crater), the fix in subsequent editions creating another plothole for why it has the Pirate's beam-based weaponry and armor.

Heck, Metroid Prime was probably not a Metroid at all, or even related to them. It would have been in the crater for 50 years, so it can't be a Metroid because those didn't exist yet, especially on Tallon IV. But Prime 3 says that Leviathans choose indigenous apex predators to corrupt, so Metroid Prime has to have been from Tallon IV. But then in the same game, you find a molted exoskeleton of what looks like a juvenile Metroid Prime, on Phaaze.

Metroid 1-3 are much more cohesive than Prime 1-3.

Thats because there's basically no story beyond the start and the end. In terms of creating a believable world, Prime is still, in my opinion, the absolute best representation of Metroid's universe.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Each Prime game branches into increasingly generic territory imo. Sure, they piled on more layers of exposition and loads of pseudo scientific "logs", but that doesn't make it more cohesive. In fact, I found the result was increasingly a patchwork of disparate ideas, many of which have already been beaten to death in other sci-fi games. Corruption was particularly guilty of this.

Seen some snippets of that before, but that's the first I've personally seen all of that together. Looks like maybe the intro movie?

Even though there is a small tutorial in between, all that is from the intro video.

Awesome video.

Anyone care to translate what is being said?

Se just talks about the baby metroid (THE BABY) and then recieves a distress signal from something they call a "bottle ship".

Yep, its strange, becuase we have seen videos of little Samus in Metroid Other M, and that comes directly from the zero mission story.
Zero Mission was a better representation of what they wanted to do in the original, so it would have been better if they take it out of the timeline and replace it with Zero Mission.

In terms of creating a believable world

You mean the one where everything is powered by weapons, military ships require you to shoot doors to open them, or you can only access many areas by turning into a ball and jumping into the ball hole, or assume everyone is able to make 15 foot vertical jumps.

Yes.

You guys can say whatever you like. Metroid's universe for me will be the Prime trilogy. Plot holes, generic sci-fi, silly Samus-only stuff, bla bla bla. I dont give a shit. The universe Retro created was more convincing and interesting to me than any Metroid before it, and I'm disappointed that Retro's imagining of Metroid will probably never be seen again, regardless of how good future Metroid games (Other M included) will be.

Especially the worlds. Tallon IV, Aether, Bryyo, and Elysia are amoung the most interesting places I've ever visited in videogames.

Its not my fault you guys have crappy taste.

Oh sweet, I was worried for a moment that we might have an actual conversation. If you really want to put a nail in the coffin you might as well cap off your next post with "lol, rose tinted glasses".

I definitely find the Metroid universe in the Prime series more interesting. In the main Metroids, you just have the artwork and the atmosphere and the enemies to soak into. Granted, the worlds in the originals are much more alien and creepy, but I enjoy the aspects of civilisation (or rather, remnants?) introduced in the Prime series too. In Prime they greatly expanded on their own specific universe. The lore is incredibly well thought out, and everything seems to be there for a reason (even though the reasons may not always make sense).

Its also not my fault you take everything too seriously :lol.

I think this gets at one of the core divisions in the Metroid fanbase, at least from a presentation standpoint, which is showing vs. telling. Some people prefer suggestion, and others want very literal explanations.

Shit, knowing how much everyone seems to hate Aussies, I would not hedge any bets for 2010.

So far in 3D I'd agree, but that's why Other M is interesting, will Sakamoto's vision in 3D be more superior than Retro's vision? I can't wait to find out.

I just don't understand why it's so much further back than the U.S. release and yet we get Sin & Punishment 2 before them..........why.

Obviously God is angry at your government.

Y'all should do something about that.
Just sayin'...

come on,

you can, like, make the - uh - point without pssin on the awesome world design of the firszxt two metrdoif prime[/i] games.

because metroid pime 1 and 2 look really fucking good and have amazing worlds better than the majority of other game=s.

The comments on controls really annoy me, I abhor that philosophy. The controls in the game seem like they'll be fine, but I just hate that sentiment altogether for gaming.

no, I'm trying to deflect attention away from how predictable that post was. obviously.

obviously[/i].

Sin and Punishment 2 got brought forward (Or delayed in America however you want to see it) because we get Mario Galaxy 2 later. Nintendo don't want Mario and Sin and Punishment competing with each other because S&P would just bomb so they need to release them at different times.

You could see it like when Minish Cap came out in Europe in 2004 while in America it came out in 2005. The DS was not released in Europe until next year so NoE wanted a product on the shelves to promote and sell before the DS came out and NoA didn't want to release a GBA Zelda and the DS at the same time.

Do you understand what "believable" means in terms of entertainment medium? AVATAR (the 3d movie) was a totally believable world...it had blue aliens.......

Damn gamestop and their bonus shit. Every time I've ordered online from them for a bonus I've gotten screwed over in some way. Either them not sending one item claiming the company didn't get any at all not even for in store pre-orders (the Metroid Trilogy poster) or the bonus item comes busted or smashed and I get told well it was free so too bad.

can't we just get some kind of gamestop exclusive in-game cannon that shoots gamestop used game promo stickers all over everything?

Enemies would be incapacitated, vainly attempting to move or fly, ripping off stickers only to discover the residue left is impossible to remove or defeat. It would be devastatingly glorious.
