New Silent Hill Downpour Screenshots and Character Reveal

I think it looks okay. At least the new guy's jacket has better textures, right?
Compared to Alex's jacket this is, like, a full generational leap.

Looks pretty good to me, I'm still waiting to see what the final product looks like / waiting for a demo. I was very skeptical of Castlevania being handed over to another developer only to end up loving the game, could very well be a repeat of that (I hope.)

^That is quintessential Silent Hill right there.

Nearly everything from that game looks like a generation leap of quality. That game was just embarrassing for the most part, the water isn't exactly amazing in downpour but at least it didn't look like this.

No you are not alone if you sit and wait for the jacket texture to load like the old unreal games.

and that is the officially released screenshots trying to make it look good...

I'm still baffled they released some of those screens.
Especially the first one, with marble water and textures not fully loaded.

Downpour looks excellent. beside, I'm excited to experience the new atmosphere with Daniel Licht music

I think it looks terrible. They need to give the series to someone like Naughty Dog or even Capcom, but that will never happen.
are you trolling? especially if you keep in mind that key capcom franchises are not being developed by them.

Don't care what others really think. My main concern with this game is the atmosphere. It looks like they have done a good job of nailing that down.

I don't expect top notch graphics or Ninja Gaiden controls with this game. What I have seen so far is enough for me to warrant a purchase.

They are. The naysayers in this thread can't help but make me think they've got an agenda of some sort. Some previously released screenshots have warranted criticism I felt, but this new batch look great to me. If they're representive of the final product and the game will look as good graphically as those pics would suggest, then yeah...I'm wholly satisfied.

I wonder what the screenshots are from though, surely it's not from consoles with a 2046x1279 resolution and complete lack of any aliasing anywhere. I am still hoping for a pc announcement of the game. :/

I'm liking some of the locations in this second batch of screens.

Yeah, I'm not getting all of the hate either, but that floor texture... I can't let it go!

Can't say I'm real impressed with these screens but hopefully they'll get the gameplay and atmosphere right.

Haven't been following this title (SH3 is the last Silent Hill for me) and I had no idea this game was being made with UE3 but as soon as I opened the thread, it's the first thing that came to mind. Don't know if Unreal's typically flat, low contrast lighting is the right choice for this type of game.

Jocchan said:
There was a huge picture there. It's gone now.

Nice.

I gotta admit, I'm a bit disappointed with the screens because they don't have that Silent Hill vibe. What I mean is, there isn't enough sense of a cramped space inside of buuildings like with SH2 and SH3.

That, and the grime is horrible in these shots. I want more rusty blood, dammit.

You know silent hill is a pretty great franchise, the only bad silent hill game is homecoming, so I have good hopes for this game.

Next time on "Silent Hill in outsourceland":

I didn't say I have complete faith in Vatra, and for all we know the situation you describe is exactly what will happen to Downpour. The only thing that bites me is that everybody writes the game off before even playing it.

Just look at Castlevania LoS. Although not everybody loved it, the general consensus is that is was a very good game worthy of being called Castlevania even though it did a lot of things different. And it was outsourced to a company that didn't have a great track record.

I dunno, I think Downpour looks a whole lot nicer than Homecoming. It probably won't capture the feel of the original Silent Hill games, but it could still be a solid survival horror game in its own right.

It does resemble Alan Wake in some ways, but the look of AW was always great. The issue there was the constant onslaught of enemies you were forced to deal with and the aimless outdoor segments that never seemed to end.

Not with the people on the Homecoming hate, I really enjoyed the game. Though I'm more excited for Downpour. I think there could be some new ideas here hopefully.

It's not just that I thought the whole story and everything was dumb or the way one of the first things you see in the game is fucking pyramid head killing a dude (lol). But the game itself was also just bad, it froze on my several times on ps3, lots of frame rate issues ugly too. On pc it just liked crashing on my when changing resolution and for the Scarlett boss she would hit me even before I gained control of Alex. Just terrible.

Both origins and shattered memories while also both having issues were far better than homecoming imo.

That is not my consensus. Mine dances to the tune of, it doing a wonderful job of killing a franchise with a unique identity by turning it into yet another contender in the crowded God-of-War-sure-is-swell also-ran group.

Overseas outsourcing is a heinous practice with no redeemable value and needed to die years ago.

It is important to notice here that I am in no form or shape in love with just name Silent Hill, I am in love with the artistry of the people who spawned the first four games in the series which elevated the name in my mind and gave it weight.

When you take that away, which is the only thing that gives the name meaning, and then start shopping just the hollow shell, a soulless franchise, only the name "Silent Hill", or any once fondly beheld franchise name around among lowest bidders in the west then it no longer holds any meaning to me, nor should it. It might as well be Heinz or Coca Cola for all I care, just a soulless trademark you put on a product.

Team Silent gave me some of the most gameplay experiences of my life which left a permanent mark on me, they fucking earned my respect from the get go. What the fuck have these or any of the other handful of developers that got to loan the Silent Hill name done for me? Nothing, and that is exactly what they are entitled to. Vatra games, Double Helix, western outsource company number 23? I have more faith in the toiler paper I wipe my ass with.

Fuck you Konami, your name too used to mean something once, now it might as well be a trademark for a line of toilet plungers for all the weight it carries.

Music is pretty good. More cinematic in a sense, but also very fitting.

The facial animations are cringe worthy though. The use of color is also very desaturated, but I never expected anyone to match Team Silent in the visual departement.

I just hope they came up with something legitimately good concerning Murphy, obviously what he did or didn't do will be the game's big twist and hopefully it won't be easy to see it coming from a mile away.

I like what I see, it's a shame the SH name means dissapointment to everyone here, even if it is on par with the first 3 people will say it's shit..

It'd be nice if they never explained why he's in prison. Just hint at it and let the player speculate on his own. Could be much more effective and interesting than a "shocking plot twist cutscene".

oh we both know that's not going to happen, but yeah depending on how its handled... I mean I guess I would feel kind of cheated if I finished the game and didn't really know anything.

The voyage is more important than the destination. How Murphy deals with his grief is more important than the cause of it. It'd also be a poor story if the plot hinges on a Shyamalan-twist. Though of course, sometimes such a revelation can punctuate an already good story (see: SH2*). But I'm afraid they're going to be looking at the latter and banking everything on it (see: SHH).

Also Shattered Memories, but I don't want to open that can of worms yet again.

I'm excited for this. Is there release date?

Hopefully this one got some real puzzles unlike Homecoming. And sexy monsters.

Btw. Is SH Origins worth getting?

You must be joking. While obviously not bad, they are far from impressive.

Why would I be joking? The amount of detail in the character models, even seemingly minor ones like the jail wardens and mexican convict, is top grade. The transport collision looked great too.

It's slated for release around November, something like that. Which obviously doesn't bode well for the game sales wise, but there you go. Hopefully the puzzles will be noteworthy. I know that, like the earlier games, you can fiddle around with the difficulty to make them easier or harder, same with the combat.

Murphy did something really bad. Or took the fall for someone who did something really bad.

The kiddie fiddler theory just seems more and more likely everytime they release something. But yeah I doubt they are going with that, they probably do not have the balls, wouldn't be surprised if he had "just" killed some woman (the screamer is after all just a drowned dead woman) and then in prison being hated by everyone for being a snitch or something like that.

with a name like Murphy Pendleton... yeah... I think some people called the pedo angle from the jump. :p

I just hope this to be good and better than Homecoming, that game was horrible.

I've always played SH with a friend, solving puzzles together is awesome.

Oh man, solving that Shakespeare puzzle in SH3 with my dad when I was 13 on the hardest puzzle difficulty was just amazing. Took so long but in the end so rewarding. He's nearly 50 now and got a ps3, but he never made it long into homecoming because the combat was too hard and he just doesn't care for the whole fighting thing, sucked that there was no separate difficulty levels for puzzles and combat so happy to see that return with Downpour.

I hope this is good, we need a good Silent Hill game these days. Screens look ok, there seems to be something missing in the contrast levels. The combat looks pretty lame to me - all of the tedium of improvised weapons that are destructible just "slams on the brakes" for me.

I think Book of Memories is more anticipated game than this one.
Homecoming looked horrible and downpour looks even worse.

The atmosphere and music are the most important things to me in a Silent Hill game... that and fucked up enemies that make sense depending on the character's psyche. The Siam from Homecoming was one of my favorite-designed enemies ever, from a visual standpoint. So was the Asphyxiation boss.

Anyway, I pre-ordered this game today in full.

Are you kidding me? Downpour certainly does not looking amazing, think it looks pretty good though in these screens, but one thing for sure is that it looks better than this

Yes It's an exaggeration, not trying to trick you. It's normal to look better, but I think it's not an enough improvement. Silent Hill games (1, 2, 3) used to amaze me, and the first two are two of my fav games of all time. :(

Obviously not going to happen: by outsourcing to Western developers, Konami wanted Silent Hill to become mainstream and to sell more. "That game where you play a pedophile" isn't exactly marketable.

Other than the first screen it looks Alan in the Dark. If you ignore the title there's a chance it might actually be an enjoyable experience.

I would have said that I fully agree with you, except that Shattered Memories happened. I've been continually surprised at the amount of people that really, really liked it. I'm hoping Downpour can even surpass that, but you never can tell.

From a story standpoint- no. All it does is unnecessarily muddy the waters on SH1, and try to toss in something for the character you're playing as once in a while.

From a gameplay standpoint- maybe? It's definitely different than the other SH games, allowing you to switch between normal and otherworld silent hill, but the combat centers around breakable weapons/items.

It's my least favorite of the series, but, if you have played the others, I recommend it. It should be fairly cheap at this point, which is good because it's crazy short.

I thought it was outsourced to cut costs by jumping from one unknown dev to the next?

I think it would be really interesting to see someone take that kind of risk (pedophile main character), but there's no way it could happen. The simple fact that you're playing as a pedophile, flashback reveal or whatever, would not go over well with parents. The media backlash would probably be overwhelming.

Thanks for the writeup. I'll pass this and get SH Shattered Memories.
