Oh, and I'm not suggesting otherwise. Even on very slow LCDs, you can still see the difference between 30 and 60 fps. However, LCDs simply lessens the impact (between 30 and 60) due to their slow response times.
Well there are LCDs in existance that have response times fast enough for 60hz - though current PSPs isn't one of them.
What you get is the effect of a slight motion blur (think Bouncer, just not quite as obvious) - and to be fair, that actually works to improve IQ somewhat as you get less aliasing in motion

Oh yes? Which LCDs are you talking about? I've used a 12ms LCD before and the LCD on my laptop is 16ms. Both of them suffer from ghosting (though it is nowhere near as severe as slower LCDs). I know Samsung has introduced an 8ms LCD, but the 8ms only applies to low contrast areas, according to reports.
Do you happen to know what kind of response time the PSP LCD has?
Ok the original statement about this game looking similar to F-Zero X is absolutely absurd but F-Zero X was a perfect 60FPS and up to 30 Vehicles on screen. So comparisons to Wipeout are a bit unfair.
Here's some Wipeout 64 screens:
MUCH better looking in screenshots then F-Zero X and a lot closer to Wipeout Pure. Obviously it's still a fair bit of Wipeout Pure. The game would look a lot sharper though due to the DS having no texture filtering.
Wipeout 64 looks somewhat appealing in screens, but there is quite a difference between WO64 and WOP. Mainly, it comes down to environmental complexity...
WO64 features very simplistic structural geometry on which the tracks are built. This is very noticible when the game is in motion, of course, but those shots can be misleading...
Wipeout Pure is not a simplistic looking game, despite what some may think. The level of detail present in the tracks was not even common until PS2. Most Dreamcast racers failed to offer environments with that amount of geometry, for example.
I think people have simply forgotten. The visuals produced by PSP, on the whole, seem to resemble late DC/early PS2 era visuals.
It was a deliberate design choice. Had EAD settled for half the framerate and a fourth the racers, I'm sure they could've managed something comparable to the WipEout games for screen shots.
