New Yoshi's Island announced for 3DS!

Hmmm sorry, just had a minute of deja vu from the new zelda thread.

This thread is literally the new zelda thread, complete with the same arguments and justifications. Truly fascinating.
I think LTTP2 looks fantastic and the sprites/models in this look shit. Don't paint everybody with negative impressions of this game with broad strokes.

Shame they went for that disgusting "James Pond" style sprite work. Eugh.

Zero charm retained from the original.

They really haven't outdone themselves.

I'm not too concerned about the visuals right now, from the sounds of it the game is at least a year out since Iwata did not announce a date. Nintendo generally does a number of visual passes throughout development and a lot the issues with the foreground and character models can be cleaned up pretty easily with some shading and better filtering.

Definitely some questionable art design choices here though, which is weird because ALttP looks great. I wonder who is developing this.

My money is on Arzest, the spiritual successor to Artoon, who made Yoshi's Island DS.

Arzest did some work on Mii Plaza for 3DS.

I have the same opinion as the new Zelda. Doesn't look good (not horrible either), but I wanted a new one so I don't care.

I loved YIDS. All the complaints I've read of it were in the lines of "it doesn't have heart" or crap like that. Gameplay-wise it was ace, so I'm not worried if the succesor of Artoon is developing it.

i think it looks pretty good, actually. not amazing, but it's very charming in a yoshi's story sort of way.

i've been down on the 3ds, but i really like how the system has become this alternate reality where 3d graphics just meant 3d enhancing 2d gameplay instead of replacing it wholesale.

Yoshis Island was much more a Tezuka game and the younger EAD directors than Miyamoto. You also forgot Yoshis Story in 1997 with lush pre-rendered CG.

I love that this game is being criticized using Photoshop terms. As someone who uses this program for a living, I find it highly amusing that all the "faults" being found are apparently attributed to 5 second default filter jobs on PS.

The coins omg.. we can see the cutout, the badly erased edge of them, like if they actually took something somewhere and quickly paste it as game graphics.

C'mon orioto. They can animate, draw, paint and compose entire worlds, characters and levels and you are arguing that the serrated edges on those coins is the result of a badly erased backdrop?

I call it "Lost in Translation".
I'll still defend how the original DKC trilogy looked, but there are some games that blatantly work better with 2D sprite work or being hand-drawn than the awkward shift to 2.5D some developers associate with 'enhancing' an old game.

Something about the art style I'm not really digging. I didn't like the original game's graphics either. Oh well. It could still turn out to be a good game.

I recorded a little bit of gameplay to try and get a comparison as close as I could

Both look good to me. I think I prefer the new one overall, but I can see flaws. Hopefully it'll be improved. Even Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion looked better than their initial reveals in the end, so we'll see.

Is it sad that I just realised these are supposed to be the exact same levels though? Whoops.

Uh, I think both are pretty. Funny, for all the hate it gets the DS game was also pretty nice looking in my eyes.

Yeah, just an okay platformer. Super Princess Peach was much better in my opinion and also one of the best looking Mario-related platformers ever released.

How was the DS game?

It was good, not great. I'd give it a 7.5/10. If it wasn't a Nintendo 1st party game, people wouldn't have held it such a high degree.

The comparison between the SNES and 3DS Gifs make it look like the exact same level. I'm wondering just how early they showed this off. I doubt we'll get Yoshi's Island 3DS and Yoshi's Yarn in the same quarter. I've said it before, but I think they simply showed this one off a bit early, and I wouldn't expect it to launch until atleast March. 2014. I can see it as a summer 2014 title.

Not a memorable game. Not bad per se, but certainly not good. The only thing I can remember was that the music didn't hold a candle to Yoshi's Island.

hmm, I guess I'll wait for this one instead.

Hmm, not sure about the art style. Definitely want to see some more media on this one anyway. After Yoshi's Island DS, I feel like Nintendo needs to prove that this game is worth playing.

I realize that with the 3DS they wanted to use 3D models, but at this point I expected a Yoshi's game with Boy and His Blob type art - all handrawn and beautiful like Orioto's art. And it's possible too! And the backgrounds are almost spot on! It's just Yoshi and the foreground characters themselves that bug me.

Still, I guess it could be worse.

Is it bad that I think the game looks great?

The original is still the best but I do like the look they're going for here, like if Yoshi's Island had Yoshi Story graphics. It does look a tad messy in some areas, though, and I hope they get ironed out before launch (is this planned for 2013?)

Love it.

Thanks for the comparison, definitely makes me feel more comfortable in saying "I like the new one".

I don't have much nostalgia for the original as I only rented it in the 90s and never played through the entire thing until a few years ago. Maybe that's the difference.

I wish Nintendo would stop mixing 2D and 3D elements. It looks awful.

If they want this style to look coherent they need to do hand painted sprites, or go completely 3D. That's all there is to it.

SNES game looks better but it's not bad overall. Not loving the softer look.

Hope it plays well. Yoshi's Island is absolute platforming bliss. Been meaning to play the DS game for a long time.

The 3D elements look uneven. Baby Mario and that flower enemy look right but Yoshi and the Piranha Plant don't.

It's just like Nintendo to make portable games like it's the turn of the millennium.

3DS is officially now a Game Boy Advance 2, graphics and all. I mean, seriously, how many 2.5D "remakes" is Nintendo going to make? And don't say this is a totally new game, as with the new Zelda, it's just a new adventure with old assets. What happened to the console being stronger than the PSP?

Is it me or are most new 3DS games made by Nintendo starting to look like New Super Mario Brothers? I mean, it's a winning formula when you think about it. Simple 2D games cost Nintendo pennies to make and sell more than their immerse titles for core gamers.

Ah well, this conference just re-iterated that Nintendo is no longer a company for me; I've already got Donkey Kong, A link to the Past, and Yoshi's Island, and I thoroughly enjoyed them 12-15 years ago.

I really should have been clearer, but by assets I meant level design, art design, and enemy design.

your rant really epitomizes the cliche "you can't please everyone"

you're complaining about LTTP2 while thousands of others were clamouring for it
